VERSE 1

निशाचरेन्द्रस्य निशम्य वाक्यम्
स कुम्भकर्णस्य च गर्जितानि
विभीषणो राक्षसराजमुख्य
मुवाच वाक्यम् हितम्र्थयुक्तम्

niśācarendrasya niśamya vākyam
sa kumbhakarṇasya ca garjitāni
vibhīṣaṇo rākṣasarājamukhya
muvāca vākyam hitamrthayuktam

SYNONYMS

niśamya: hearing | vākyam: words | niśācarendrasya: of the king of demons | garijitāni: and the growls | kumbhakarṇasya: of Kumbhakarna | saḥ vibhīṣaṇaḥ: that Vibhishana | uvāca: spoke | hitam: friendly | arthayuktam: and meaningful | rākṣasarājamukhyam: to that Ravana |

TRANSLATION

Hearing the words of Ravana the king of demons and the growls of Kumbhakarna, Vibhishana spoke the following friendly and meaningful words to Ravana the foremost king of ogres:

VERSE 2

वृतो हि बाह्वन्तरभोगराशि
श्चिन्ताविषः सुस्मिततीक्षणदम्ष्ट्रः
पञ्चाङ्गुलीपञ्चशिरो।अतिकायः
सीतामहाहिस्तव केन राजन्

vṛto hi bāhvantarabhogarāśi
ścintāviṣaḥ susmitatīkṣaṇadamṣṭraḥ
pañcāṅgulīpañcaśiro|atikāyaḥ
sītāmahāhistava kena rājan

SYNONYMS

rājā: "O | king! k͟hena: by whom | vṟ^taḥ: has been wrapped | tava: to you | sīta mahā hiḥ atikāyaḥ: this great serpent of gigantic body called Sita | bāhvantarabhogarāśiḥ: with heap of expanded hoods as her bosom | cintāviṣaḥ: having the poison called anxiety | susmita tīkṣṇadamṣtraḥ: with sharp fangs as her sweet smile | paṇcāṇgulī paṇca śiro atikāyaḥ: with five hoods as her five fingers." |

TRANSLATION

"By whom, O, king, has been wrapped around your neck, this great serpent of gigantic body called Sita, with heap of expended hoods as her bosom, having poison as her anxiety and with sharp fangs as her sweet smile and with five hoods as her five fingers."

VERSE 3

यावन्न लङ्का समभिद्रवन्ति
वलीमुखाः पर्वतकूटमात्राः
दम्ष्ट्रयुधाश्चैव नखायुधाश्च
प्रदीयताम् दाशरथाय मैथिली

yāvanna laṅkā samabhidravanti
valīmukhāḥ parvatakūṭamātrāḥ
damṣṭrayudhāścaiva nakhāyudhāśca
pradīyatām dāśarathāya maithilī

SYNONYMS

na yāvat: before | valumukhāḥ: the monkeys | parvata kūṭa mātrāḥ: with the size of mountain peaks | damṣṭrāyudhāḥ: with their teeth as weapons | nakhāyudhāśca: and their nails too as weapons | samādhidravanti: rush full upon | laṇkām: the city of Lanka | maithilī: let Sita | pradīyatām: be given back | daśarathāya: to Rama." |

TRANSLATION

"Even before the monkeys with their body size as mountain peaks, having their teeth and nails as weapons, rush full upon the city of Lanka, give back Sita to Rama."

VERSE 4

यावन्न गृह्णन्ति शिरांसि बाणा
रामेरिता राक्षसपुङ्गवानाम्
वज्रोपमा वायुसमानवेगाः
प्रदीयताम् दाशरथाय मैथिली

yāvanna gṛhṇanti śirāṃsi bāṇā
rāmeritā rākṣasapuṅgavānām
vajropamā vāyusamānavegāḥ
pradīyatām dāśarathāya maithilī

SYNONYMS

na yāvat: before | bāṇāḥ: the arrows | rāmeritā: dispatched by Rama | vajropamā: resembling thunderbolts | vāyu samāna vegāḥ: with a speed equal to wind | gṛhṇanti: take away | śirāmsi: the heads | rākṣasapuṇgavān: of the chiefs of demons | maithilī: let Sita | pradīyatām: be given back | dāśarathāya: to Rama." |

TRANSLATION

"Even before arrows resembling thunder bolts and with a speed equal to wind, dispatched by Rama, take away the heads of chiefs of demons, give back Sita to Rama."

VERSE 5

न कुम्भकर्णेन्द्रजितौ च राजम्
स्तथा महापार्श्वमहोदरौ वा
निकुम्भकुम्भौ च तथातिकायः
स्थातुम् समर्था युधि राघवस्य

na kumbhakarṇendrajitau ca rājam
stathā mahāpārśvamahodarau vā
nikumbhakumbhau ca tathātikāyaḥ
sthātum samarthā yudhi rāghavasya

SYNONYMS

rājan: O | kumbhakarṇendrajitou: Either Kumbhakarna or Indrajit | tathā: and | mahaparśva mahodarou vā: either Mahaparshvaa or Mahodara | nikumbhakumbhaou: or Nikumbha or Kumbha | atikāyaḥ: Atikaya | na samarthāḥ: cannot | sthātum: withstand | rāghavasya: against Rama | yudhi: in battle." |

TRANSLATION

"O, king! Either Kumbhakarna or Indrajit and either Mahaparsva or Mahodara and either Nikumbha or Kumbha or even Atikaya cannot withstand Rama in battle."

VERSE 6

जीवंस्तु रामस्य न मोक्स्यसे त्वम्
गुप्तः सवित्राप्यथवा मरुद्भिः
न वासवस्याङ्कगतो न मृत्यो
र्नभो न पातालमनुप्रविष्टः

jīvaṃstu rāmasya na moksyase tvam
guptaḥ savitrāpyathavā marudbhiḥ
na vāsavasyāṅkagato na mṛtyo
rnabho na pātālamanupraviṣṭaḥ

SYNONYMS

tvam: (Even if) you | guptaḥ: are guarded | savitrā: by the sun god | athavā: or marudbhiH = by Maruts | jīvan: alive | rāmasya: by Rama | na: nor | aṇgagataḥ: when gone in proximity | vāsavasya: of Indra | mṛtyoḥ: when gone nearer to the god of death | anupraviṣṭaḥ: when penetrated | nabhaḥ: the heaven | pātālam: or under the earth." |

TRANSLATION

"Even if you are protected by the sun god, or by Maruts (storm gods) nor even seated in the lap of Indra or god of Death nor if you have penetrated into the regions of heaven or under the earth you will not be spared by the arrows of Rama."

VERSE 7

निशम्य वाक्यम् तु विभीषणस्य
ततः प्रहस्तो वचनम् बभाषे
न नो भयम् विद्म न दैवतेभ्यो
न दानवेभ्यो।अप्यथवा कदाचित्

niśamya vākyam tu vibhīṣaṇasya
tataḥ prahasto vacanam babhāṣe
na no bhayam vidma na daivatebhyo
na dānavebhyo|apyathavā kadācit

SYNONYMS

niśamya: hearing | vākyam: the words | vibhīśaṇasya: of Vibhishana | prahastaḥ: Prahasta | tataḥ: then | babhāṣe: spoke | vacanam: these words | naḥ: "To us | na vidma: is not known | bhayam: fear | na: neither | daivatebhyaḥ: for celestials | na athavā: nor | dānavebhyaḥ: for demons | kadācit: at any time." |

TRANSLATION

Hearing the words of Vibhishana, Prahasta spoke as follows: "We are not knowing of fear at all. We do not have fear of either celestials or demons at any time."

VERSE 8

न यक्षगन्धर्वमहोरगेभ्यो
भयम् न सम्ख्ये पतगोरगेभ्यः
कथम् नु रामाद्भविता भयम् नो
नरेन्द्रपुत्रात्समरे कदाचित्

na yakṣagandharvamahoragebhyo
bhayam na samkhye patagoragebhyaḥ
katham nu rāmādbhavitā bhayam no
narendraputrātsamare kadācit

SYNONYMS

na bhayam: there is no fear | yakśagandharva mahoragebhyaḥ: from Yakshas or Gandharvas or eminent Nagas | na: nor from | patagoragebhyaḥ: birds and reptiles | samkhye: in battle | katham: how | bhavitā: can | kadācit: at any time | bhayam: fear | naḥ: to us | samare: in battle | rāmāt: from Rama | narendraputrāt: the son of a human king?" |

TRANSLATION

"We do not have fear from Yakshas (demi- gods) or Gandharvas (celestial musicians) or eminent Nagas (serpent demons) or from birds and reptiles on the field of battle. When such is the case, how can we have fear from Rama, the son of a human king at any time in battle?"

VERSE 9

प्रहस्तवाक्यम् त्वहितम् निशम्य
विभीषणो राजहितानुकाङिक्षी
ततो महार्थम् वचनम् बभाषे
धर्मार्थकामेषु निविष्टबुद्धिः

prahastavākyam tvahitam niśamya
vibhīṣaṇo rājahitānukāṅikṣī
tato mahārtham vacanam babhāṣe
dharmārthakāmeṣu niviṣṭabuddhiḥ

SYNONYMS

tatah: then | vibhīśaṇaḥ: Vibhishana | rāja hitānukāṇkṣīi: who desired the welfare of the king | niviṣṭa buddhiḥ: who possessed a stable mind | dharmārthakāmaṣu: in virtue wealth and pleasure | niśamya: having heard | Prahasta vākyam: the words of Prahasta | ahitam: which were inimical | babhāṣe: spoke | mahārtham: greatly meaningful | vacanam: words(as follows): |

TRANSLATION

Vibhishana who desired the welfare of the king and who possessed a stable mind in virtue wealth and pleasure, after hearing the inimical words of Prahasta, spoke highly meaningful words as follows:

VERSE 10

प्रहस्त राजा च महोदरश्च
त्वम् कुम्भकर्णश्च यथार्थजातम्
ब्रवीत रामम् प्रति तन्न शक्यम्
यथा गतिः स्वर्गमधर्मबुद्धेः

prahasta rājā ca mahodaraśca
tvam kumbhakarṇaśca yathārthajātam
bravīta rāmam prati tanna śakyam
yathā gatiḥ svargamadharmabuddheḥ

SYNONYMS

prahasta: "O | Prahasta! ẏathā: How | rājāca: the king | mahodaraśca: and Mahodara | tvam: you | kumbhakarṇaśca: and Kumbhakarna | bravīta: are telling | arthajātam: the collection of things | rāmamprati: about Rama | tat: that | naśakyam: is impossible | yathā: as | adharmabuddheḥ: to the wicked minded | gatiḥ: going | svargam: to heaven(is impossible)" |

TRANSLATION

"O, Prahasta! The series of actions king or Mahodara as also yourself and Kumbhakarna propose to take against Rama are impossible of being accomplished, any more than going to heaven by wicked minded persons."

VERSE 11

वधस्तु रामस्य मया त्वया च
प्रहस्त सर्वैरपि राक्षसैर्वा
कथम् भवेदर्थविशारदस्य
महार्णवम् तर्तु मिवाप्लवस्य

vadhastu rāmasya mayā tvayā ca
prahasta sarvairapi rākṣasairvā
katham bhavedarthaviśāradasya
mahārṇavam tartu mivāplavasya

SYNONYMS

katham: how | bhavet: is it possible | mayā: by me | tvayāca: or by you | sarvaḥ: or by all | rākṣasairvā: demons | vadhaḥ: the killing | rāmasya: of Rama | arthaviśāradasya: who is expert in any matter | tartum iva: like crossing | mahārṇavam: a great ocean | aplavasya: by a person without a bark" |

TRANSLATION

"How is it possible by me or by you or by all the demons to kill Rama, who is expert in all matters, any more than a person without a bark to cross a great ocean."

VERSE 12

धर्मप्रधानस्य महारथस्य
इक्स्वाकुवंशप्रभवस्य राज्ञः
पुरो।अस्य देवाश्च तथाविधस्य
कृत्येषु शक्तस्य भवन्ति मूढाः

dharmapradhānasya mahārathasya
iksvākuvaṃśaprabhavasya rājñaḥ
puro|asya devāśca tathāvidhasya
kṛtyeṣu śaktasya bhavanti mūḍhāḥ

SYNONYMS

"devaśca: Even the celestials | bhavanti: become | mūḍhāḥ: bewildered | puraḥ: before | rāġ^yaḥ: the king | asya: Rama | tathāvidhasya: of such qualities as whose priority is righteousness | mahārathasya: who is great car warrior | ikṣvākuvamśa prabhavesya: who was born in Ikshvaku dynasty | śaktasya: who is capable of accomplishing | kṛteṣu: his objects." |

TRANSLATION

"Even the celestials would feel bewildered when placed in front of the king Rama who gives priority to righteousness, is a great car warrior, was born in the dynasty of Ikshvaku and is capable of accomplishing his objects."

VERSE 13

तीक्षणा न तावत्तव कङ्कपत्रा
दुरापदा राघवविप्रमुक्ताः
भित्त्वाशरीरम् प्रविशन्ति बाणाः
प्रहस्त तेनैव विकत्थसे त्वम्

tīkṣaṇā na tāvattava kaṅkapatrā
durāpadā rāghavavipramuktāḥ
bhittvāśarīram praviśanti bāṇāḥ
prahasta tenaiva vikatthase tvam

SYNONYMS

prahasta: O | Prahasta ! bāṇāḥ: the arrows | rāghavavipramuktāḥ: released by Rama | tīkṣṇāḥ: which are sharp | kaṅkapatrāḥ: furnished with heron's feathers | durāsadāḥ: which are dangerous to be approached | na praviśanti tāvat: did not penetrate | bhittavā: piercing | tava: your | śarīram: body | tenaina: for that reason | tvam: you | vikatthase: are boasting" |

TRANSLATION

"O, Prahasta! The sharp arrows discharged by Rama, which are furnished with heron's feathers and are dangerous to be approached, have not yet penetrated, duly piercing, your body. That is why, you indulge in a boastful talk."

VERSE 14

भित्त्वा न तावत्प्रविशन्ति कायम्
प्राणान्तकास्ते।अशनितुल्य्वेगाः
शिताः शरा राघवविप्रमुक्ताः
प्रहस्त तेनैव विकत्थसे त्वम्

bhittvā na tāvatpraviśanti kāyam
prāṇāntakāste|aśanitulyvegāḥ
śitāḥ śarā rāghavavipramuktāḥ
prahasta tenaiva vikatthase tvam

SYNONYMS

prahaste: O | Prahasta! ṣarāḥ: The arrows | prāṇāhtakāḥ: which are fatal | aśanitulyavegāḥ: having the speed of a thunderbolt | śitāḥ: and are sharp | rāghave vipramuktāḥ: discharged by Rama | na tāvat praviśanti: have not yet penetrated | bhitvā: splitting | te: your | kāyam: body | tenaiva: that is why | tvam: you | vikatthase: are boasting." |

TRANSLATION

"The sharp and fatal arrows, discharged by Rama with the speed of a thunderbolt, have not yet penetrated, duly splitting your body. That is why; you are indulged in a boastful talk."

VERSE 15

न रावणो नाइबलस्त्रीशीर्षो
न कुम्भकर्णस्य सुतो निकुभः
न चेन्द्रजिद्दाशरथिम् प्रसोढुम्
त्वम् वा रणे शक्रसमम् समर्थः

na rāvaṇo nāibalastrīśīrṣo
na kumbhakarṇasya suto nikubhaḥ
na cendrajiddāśarathim prasoḍhum
tvam vā raṇe śakrasamam samarthaḥ

SYNONYMS

rāvaṇaḥ: Ravana | nasamarthaḥ: is not capable | na: nor | triśīrṣaḥ: Triseersha | atibalaḥ: with great strength | īndrajit: Indrajit | tvam vā: nor yourself | soḍhum: to withstand | dāśarathim: Rama | śakrasamam: equal to Indra | raṇe: in battle." |

TRANSLATION

"Ravana or Triseersha, with great strength or Nikumbha the son of Kumbhakarna or Indrajit or yourself are not capable to withstand Rama, who is equal in strength to Indra, in battle."

VERSE 16

देवान्तको वापि नरान्तको वा
तथातिकायो।अतिरथो महात्मा
अकम्पननश्चाद्रिसमानसारः
स्थातुम् न शक्ता युधि राघवस्य

devāntako vāpi narāntako vā
tathātikāyo|atiratho mahātmā
akampananaścādrisamānasāraḥ
sthātum na śaktā yudhi rāghavasya

SYNONYMS

devāntakova'pi: or even Devantaka | mahātmā: of gigantic proportions | akampanaśca: or Akampana | adrisamāna sāraḥ: who is mighty as an ocean | na śaktāḥ: are not capable | sthātum: to withstand | yudhi: in battle | rāghavasya: against Rama." |

TRANSLATION

"Even Devantaka or Narantaka or Atikaya or Atiratha of gigantic proportions, or Akampana who is mighty as an ocean are not capable to withstand against Rama in battle."

VERSE 17

अयम् च राजा न्यसनाभिभूतो
मित्रैरमित्रप्रतिमैर्भवद्भिः
अन्वास्यते राक्षसनाशनार्थे
तीक्षणः प्रकृत्या ह्यसमीक्ष्यकारी

ayam ca rājā nyasanābhibhūto
mitrairamitrapratimairbhavadbhiḥ
anvāsyate rākṣasanāśanārthe
tīkṣaṇaḥ prakṛtyā hyasamīkṣyakārī

SYNONYMS

ayam rājā: this king | vyasanābhibhūtaḥ: who is over come by evil addictions* | tīkṣṇaḥ: is rude | prakṛtyā: in nature | asamīkṣyakārī: and acts inconsiderately | rākṣanāśanarthe: for the destruction of demons | anvāsyate: he is being seated round as a caucus | bhavadbhiḥ: by you | mitraiḥ: who are his friends | amitrapratimaiḥ: taking the form of enemies." |

TRANSLATION

"This king who is overcome by evil addictions, * is rude in nature and acts inconsiderately. Such a king is being surrounded as a caucus by you who are his companions taking the form of his enemies for the ultimate destruction of demons."

PURPORT

*The following are the seven evil habits to which kings are generally found addicted: --Harshness of speech and severity of punishment, extravagance, drinking, love of women, hunting and gambling.
VERSE 18

अनन्तभोगेन सहस्रमूर्ध्ना
वागेन भीमेन महाबलेन
बलात्परिक्षिप्तमिमम् भवन्तो
राजानमुत्क्षिप्य विमोचयन्तु

anantabhogena sahasramūrdhnā
vāgena bhīmena mahābalena
balātparikṣiptamimam bhavanto
rājānamutkṣipya vimocayantu

SYNONYMS

bhavantaḥ: you | utekṣipya: lift up | vimocayantu: and release | imām rājānam: this king | parikṣiptam: who has been wrapped | balata: forcibly | bhīmana: by terrific | nāgena: snake | mahābalena: exceedingly strong | ananta bhogena: of boundless proportions | sahasra mūrdhnā: having thousand hoods." |

TRANSLATION

"You lift up and release this king, who has been wrapped forcibly by a terrific and exceedingly strong snake of boundless proportions having thousand hoods and make him completely free."

VERSE 19

यावद्धि केशग्रहणात्सुहृद्भिः
समेत्य सर्वैः परिपूर्णकामैः
निगृह्य राजा परिरक्षितव्यो
भूतैर्यथा भीमबलैर्गृहीअः

yāvaddhi keśagrahaṇātsuhṛdbhiḥ
sametya sarvaiḥ paripūrṇakāmaiḥ
nigṛhya rājā parirakṣitavyo
bhūtairyathā bhīmabalairgṛhīaḥ

SYNONYMS

sarvaiḥ: all | suhṝdbhiḥ: the well wishers | paripūrṇakāmaiḥ: who are getting their desires fulfilled (by the king) | sametya: should come together | rājā parirakṣitavyaḥhi: and the king is indeed to be protected | nigṛhya: by coersion | keśagrahaṇāt yāvat: even by pulling his hair | gṛhītaḥ yathā: as one who is taken possession of | bhūtaiḥ: by evil spirits | bhīmabalaiaḥ: of terrific strength." |

TRANSLATION

"All the well-wishers who are getting their desires fulfilled by the king, should come together and protect the king by coercion even by pulling his hair if necessary as one who is taken ossession of by evil spirits with terrific strength, is protected by one's kith and kin."

VERSE 20

सुवारिणा राघवसागरेण
प्रच्चाद्यमानस्तरसा भवद्भिः
प्रच्चाद्यमानस्तरसा भवद्भिः
युक्तस्त्वयम् तारयितुम् समेत्य
काकुत्थ्सपातालमुखे पतन्सः

suvāriṇā rāghavasāgareṇa
praccādyamānastarasā bhavadbhiḥ
praccādyamānastarasā bhavadbhiḥ
yuktastvayam tārayitum sametya
kākutthsapātālamukhe patansaḥ

SYNONYMS

ayam: this Ravana | praccādyamānaḥ: who is going to be enveloped | tarasā: forcibly | rāghavasāgareṇa: with full of excellent water | patan: and who is about to fall | kākutthsa pātāla mukhe: into the mouth of Patala (the nethermost subterranean region | yuktaḥ: is fit | tārayitum: to be saved | sametya: united | bhavidbhiḥ: by you." |

TRANSLATION

"This Ravana, for his part who is going to be enveloped forcibly by an ocean in the shape of Rama - which is full of excellent water (who possesses excellent moral character) and who is about to fall into the mouth of Patala (the nethermost subterranean region) in the shape of Rama, is fit to be rescued united by you."

VERSE 21

इदम् पुरस्यास्य सराक्षसस्य
राज्ञश्च पथ्यम् ससुहृज्जनस्य
सम्यग्घि वाक्यम् स्वमतम् ब्रवीमि
नरेन्द्रपुत्राय ददातु मैथिलीम्

idam purasyāsya sarākṣasasya
rājñaśca pathyam sasuhṛjjanasya
samyagghi vākyam svamatam bravīmi
narendraputrāya dadātu maithilīm

SYNONYMS

bravīmihi: I am indeed telling | samyak: rightly | idam vākyam: these words | pathyam: which are wholesome | svamatam: as per my opinion | asya: to this | parasya: city | parākṣasasya: and the demons residing init | rāġ^yaśca: to the king | sasuhṛjjanasya: along with his well wishers | maithilīm: Let Sita | dadātu: be given back | narendraputrāya: to Rama". |

TRANSLATION

"I am telling these right and wholesome words, as per my opinion, to this city and the demons inhabiting in it as well as to the king and his well wishers: Let Sita be given back to Rama."

VERSE 22

इत्यार्षे श्रीमद्रामायणे आदिकाव्ये युद्धकाण्डे चतुर्दशः सर्गः

ityārṣe śrīmadrāmāyaṇe ādikāvye yuddhakāṇḍe caturdaśaḥ sargaḥ

SYNONYMS

buddhvā: knowing | vīryam: the strength | parasya: of the enemies | svabalamca: and our own strength | anumṝśya: grasping | buddhyā: by the intellect | tathā: like wise | sthānam: the status quo | kṣayamcaiva: the fall | tathaiva: and | vṛddhim: rise | svapakṣe: in our army | vadet: (he who) speaks | svāmihitam: in the interest of the king | khhamam: in a befitting manner | saḥ: he | mantrī: is the councellor". |

TRANSLATION

"A counselor is he, who after knowing the strength of the enemies and that of his own (master) and even so duly grasping with his intellect, the status quo, fall, or rise in military power like-wise on both sides, renders advice which is appropriate to the interest of his king."
