VERSE 1

उपस्थितम् तु तं कृत्वा पुष्पकं पुष्पभूषितम्
अविदूरे स्थितो राममित्युवाच विभीषणः

upasthitam tu taṃ kṛtvā puṣpakaṃ puṣpabhūṣitam
avidūre sthito rāmamityuvāca vibhīṣaṇaḥ

SYNONYMS

vihīṣaṇaḥ: Vibhishana | kṛtvā upasthitam: keeping ready | tam: that | puṣpakam: Pushpaka the aerial car | puṣpabhūṣitam: decorated with flowers | sthitaḥ: stood | avidūre: not very far | uvāca: and spoke | iti: thus | rāmam: to Rama (as follows): |

TRANSLATION

Keeping ready Pushpaka the aerial car decorated with flowers, Vibhishana, for his part, standing not very far, spoke to Rama (as follows):

VERSE 2

स तु बद्धाञ्जलिपुटो विनीतो राक्षसेश्वरः
अब्रवीत्त्वरयोपेतः किं करोमीति राघवम्

sa tu baddhāñjalipuṭo vinīto rākṣaseśvaraḥ
abravīttvarayopetaḥ kiṃ karomīti rāghavam

SYNONYMS

kim karomi: "What (more) can I do?" | iti: thus | abravīt: spoke | upetaḥ tvarayā: with haste | saḥ rākṣaseśvaraḥ: that Vibhishana | vinītaḥ: endowed with modesty | baddhāṅjalipuṭaḥ: and with joined palms | rāghavam: to Rama. |

TRANSLATION

"What more can I do?" thus spoke with haste, Vibhishana endowed as he was with modesty and with joined palms, to Rama.

VERSE 3

तमब्रवीन्महातेजा लक्ष्मणस्योपशृण्वतः
विमृश्य राघवो वाचमिदं स्नेहपुरस्कृतम्

tamabravīnmahātejā lakṣmaṇasyopaśṛṇvataḥ
vimṛśya rāghavo vācamidaṃ snehapuraskṛtam

SYNONYMS

vimṛṣya: after some circumspection | rāmaḥ: Rama | mahātejāḥ: of great splendor | snehapuraskṛtam: affectionately | uvāca: spoke | idam: the following words | tam: to him | lakṣmaṇasya upaśṛṇvataḥ: while Lakshmana was listening. |

TRANSLATION

After some circumspection, Rama of great splendor, affectionately spoke the following words to him, while Lakshmana was listening:

VERSE 4

कृतप्रयत्नकर्माणः सर्व एव वनेचराः
रत्नैरर्थैश्च विविधैः संपूज्यन्तां विभीषण

kṛtaprayatnakarmāṇaḥ sarva eva vanecarāḥ
ratnairarthaiśca vividhaiḥ saṃpūjyantāṃ vibhīṣaṇa

SYNONYMS

sarva eva vanecarāḥ: (Let) all these monkeys and bears (ie. Denizem of forests) kR^ita prayatna karmaaNaH = who performed tasks of exertion | sampūjyantām: be honoured | ratnaiḥ: with precious stones | vividhaiḥ arthaiśca: and riches of various kinds | vibhīṣaṇa: O Vibhishana! |

TRANSLATION

"Let all these monkeys and bears (ie. Denizens of forests), who performed tasks of exertion, be honoured with tasks of exertion, be honoured with precious stones and riches of various kinds, O Vibhishana!"

VERSE 5

सहामीभिस्त्वया लङ्का निर्जिता राक्षसेश्वर
हृष्टैः प्राणभयं त्यक्त्वा संग्रामेष्वनिवर्तिभिः

sahāmībhistvayā laṅkā nirjitā rākṣaseśvara
hṛṣṭaiḥ prāṇabhayaṃ tyaktvā saṃgrāmeṣvanivartibhiḥ

SYNONYMS

rākṣaseśvara: O Vibhishana the king of demons! | tvaya: by you | amībhiḥ saha: in collaboration with them | anivartibhiḥ: who never turned their backs | samgrāmeṣu: in battles | hṛṣṭaiḥ: and fought joyfully | tyaktvā: ignoring | prāṇabhayam: all risk to their lives | laṅkā: Lanka | nirjitā: has been conquered. |

TRANSLATION

"O Vibhishana the king of demons! Lanka has conquered by you, in collaboration with these monkeys, who never turned their backs in battles and fought joyfully, ignoring all risk to their lives."

VERSE 6

त इमे कृतकर्माणः सर्व एव वनौकसः
धनरत्नप्रदानेन कर्मैषां सफलं कुरु

ta ime kṛtakarmāṇaḥ sarva eva vanaukasaḥ
dhanaratnapradānena karmaiṣāṃ saphalaṃ kuru

SYNONYMS

sarve eva te ime vanaukasaḥ: all these mokeys without exception | kṛtakarmāṇaḥ: have accomplished their task | kuru saphalam eṣām karma: reward their achievement | dhanaratna pradānena: with gift of gold and precious stones. |

TRANSLATION

"All these monkeys, without exceptions, have accomplished their task. Reward their achievement with gifts of gold and precious stones."

VERSE 7

एवम् संमानिताश्चैते नन्द्यमाना यथा त्वया
भविष्यन्ति कृतज्ञेन निर्विऋता हरियूथपाः

evam saṃmānitāścaite nandyamānā yathā tvayā
bhaviṣyanti kṛtajñena nirviṛtā hariyūthapāḥ

SYNONYMS

sammanitā: highly honoured | evam: in this way | yathā nandyamānāḥ: and duly cheered | tvayā: by you | kṛtajñena: acknowledging their services | ete hariyūthapāḥ: the chiefs of monkeys-troops | bhaviṣyanti: will feel | nirvṛtāḥ: happy. |

TRANSLATION

"Highly honoured in this way any duly cheered by you, acknowledging their services, the chiefs of monkey-troops, will feel happy."

VERSE 8

त्यागिनं संग्रहीतारं सानुक्रोशं जितेन्द्रियम्
सर्वे त्वामभिगच्छन्ति ततः संबोधयामि ते

tyāginaṃ saṃgrahītāraṃ sānukrośaṃ jitendriyam
sarve tvāmabhigacchanti tataḥ saṃbodhayāmi te

SYNONYMS

sarve: all | abhigacchanti: will come nearer | tvām: to you | tyāginam: having the quality of generosity | samgrahītāram: and propitiating others | sānukrośam: showing compassion | jitendriyam: and having subjugated your senses | tataḥ: Hence | sambodhayāmi: I am reminding | te: you. |

TRANSLATION

"All will come nearer to you, for having possessed this quality of generosity, for propitiating them, for showing compassion to them and for having subjugated your senses. Hence, I am reminding you."

VERSE 9

हीनं रतिगुणैः सर्वैरभिहन्तारमाहवे
सेना त्यजति संविग्ना नृपतिं तं नरेश्वर

hīnaṃ ratiguṇaiḥ sarvairabhihantāramāhave
senā tyajati saṃvignā nṛpatiṃ taṃ nareśvara

SYNONYMS

nareśvara: O king! | samvignā: feeling agitated | senā: the army | tyajati: deserts | tam nṛpatim: that king | hīnam: who is bereft | sarvaiḥ ratiguṇaiḥ: of all loving qualities | hantāram: and who orders them to kill people | āhave: in battle. |

TRANSLATION

"O king! Feeling agitated, the army deserts that king, who is bereft of all loving qualities and who merely orders them to kill people in battle."

VERSE 10

एवमुक्तस्तु रामेण वानरांस्तान्विभीषणः
रत्नार्थसंविभागेन सर्वानेवाभ्यपूजयत्

evamuktastu rāmeṇa vānarāṃstānvibhīṣaṇaḥ
ratnārthasaṃvibhāgena sarvānevābhyapūjayat

SYNONYMS

evam: thus uktaH = spoken | rāmeṇa: by Rama | vibhīṣaṇaḥ: Vibhishana | abhyapūjayat: honoured | sarve tān vānarān: all those monkeys | ratnartha samvibhāgena: by dispersing precious stones and gold to them. |

TRANSLATION

Hearing the words of Rama, Vibhishana honoured all those monkeys, by dispersing precious stones and gold to them.

VERSE 11

ततस्तान् पूजितान् दृष्ट्वा रत्नार्थैर्हरियूथपान्
आरुरोह तदा रामस्तद्विमानमनुत्तमम्

tatastān pūjitān dṛṣṭvā ratnārthairhariyūthapān
āruroha tadā rāmastadvimānamanuttamam

SYNONYMS

tataḥ: thereafter | dṛṣṭvā: having seen | tān hariyūthapān: those commanders of monkey-troops | pūjitān: honoured | ratnārthaiḥ: with precious stones and gold | rāmaḥ: Rama | tadā: then | āruroha: mounted | tat: that | anuttamam: excellent | vimānam: aerial car. |

TRANSLATION

Thereafter, having seen on that occasion all those commanders of monkey-troops honoured with precious stones and gold, Rama then mounted that excellent aerial car.

VERSE 12

अङ्केनादाय वैदेहीं लज्जमानां यशस्विनीम्
लक्ष्मणेन सह भ्रात्रा विक्रान्तेन धनुष्मता

aṅkenādāya vaidehīṃ lajjamānāṃ yaśasvinīm
lakṣmaṇena saha bhrātrā vikrāntena dhanuṣmatā

SYNONYMS

lakṣmaṇena saha: along with Lakshmana | bhrātrā: his brother | vikrāntena: who was valiant | dhanuṣmatā: wielding a bow | ādāya: taking | yaśasvinīm: the illustrious | vaidehīm: Seetha | lajjamānām: who was feeling abashed | aṅkena: in his arms. |

TRANSLATION

He mounted the aerial car along with Lakshmana, his valiant brother wielding a bow and taking the illustrious Seetha, who was feeling abashed, in his arms.

VERSE 13

अब्रवीत्स विमानस्थः पूजयन् सर्ववानरान्
सुग्रीवं च महावीर्यम् काकुत्स्तः सविभीषणम्

abravītsa vimānasthaḥ pūjayan sarvavānarān
sugrīvaṃ ca mahāvīryam kākutstaḥ savibhīṣaṇam

SYNONYMS

pūjayan: bestowing his attention | sarva vānarān: on all the monkeys | savibhīṣaṇam: as well as Vibhishana | mahāvīryam: and the mighty | sugrīvam ca: Sugreeva | saḥ kākutthsaḥ: that Rama | vimānasthaḥ: remaining in the aerial car | abravīt: spoke (as follows): |

TRANSLATION

Bestowing attention on all the monkeys as well as Vibhishana and the mighty Sugreeva, Rama remaining in the aerial car, spoke (as follows):

VERSE 14

मित्रकार्यम् कृतमिदं भवद्भिद्वानरर्षभाः
अनुज्ञाता मया सर्वे यथेष्टम् प्रतिगच्छत

mitrakāryam kṛtamidaṃ bhavadbhidvānararṣabhāḥ
anujñātā mayā sarve yatheṣṭam pratigacchata

SYNONYMS

vānararṣabhāḥ: O the foremost of monkeys! | idam: this | mitrakāryam: work of a friend | kṛtam: has been accomplished | bhavidbhiḥ: by you | mayā anujñātāḥ: permitted by me | sarve: all of you | pratigacchata: can go | yatheṣṭam: where you will. |

TRANSLATION

"O the foremost of monkeys! This work of a friend has been accomplished by you. Permitted by me, all of you can go, where you will."

VERSE 15

यत्तु कार्यं वयस्येन स्निग्धेन च हितेन च
कृतं सुग्रीव तत्सर्वं भवता धर्मभीरुणा

yattu kāryaṃ vayasyena snigdhena ca hitena ca
kṛtaṃ sugrīva tatsarvaṃ bhavatā dharmabhīruṇā

SYNONYMS

sugrīva: O Sugreeva! | bhavatā: by you | dharma bhīruṇā: who are trembling alive to righteousness | sarvam tat: and all that | yat tu kāryam: which ought to be done | snigdhena hitena vayasyena: by an affectionate and service-minded friend | kṛtam: has been done | yāhi: go | āśu: at once | abhisamvṛtaḥ: accompanied | svasinyena: by your army | kiṣkindhām: to Kishkindha. |

TRANSLATION

"O Sugreeva! All that which ought to be done by an affectionate and service-minded friend, has been done for your part by you, trembling alive as you are to righteousness. Accompanied by your army, proceed to Kishkindha at once."

VERSE 16

स्वराज्ये वस लङ्कायां मया दत्ते विभीषण

svarājye vasa laṅkāyāṃ mayā datte vibhīṣaṇa

SYNONYMS

vibhīṣana: O Vibhishana! | vasa: reside | laṅkāyām: in Lanka | svarājya: your own kingdom | date: conferred | mayā: by me | divaukasaḥ api: even the celestials | sendrāḥ: including Indra | na śaktāḥ: shall not be able | tvām: you. |

TRANSLATION

"O Vibhishana! Settle down in your kingdom at Lanka, conferred by me. Even the celestials including Indra shall not be able to attack you."

VERSE 17

अयोध्यां प्रतियास्यामि राजधानीं पितुर्मम

ayodhyāṃ pratiyāsyāmi rājadhānīṃ piturmama

SYNONYMS

yāsyāmi: I am going | ayodhyām prati: to Ayodhya | rājadhānīm: seat of government | mama pituḥ: of my father | icchāmi: I bid | abhyanujñātum: adieu (to you) | āmantrayāmi: and wish to take leave | vah: of you | sarvān: all. |

TRANSLATION

" I am going to Ayodhya, the seat of government of my father. I bid adieu to you and wish to take leave of you all."

VERSE 18

एवमुक्तास्तु रामेण हरीन्द्रा हरयस्तथा

evamuktāstu rāmeṇa harīndrā harayastathā

SYNONYMS

evam: thus | uktāḥ: spoken | rāmeṇa: by Rama | harīndrāh: the monkey-chiefs | tathā: and | harayaḥ: the monkeys | vibhīṣaṇaḥ: Vibhishana | rākṣasaḥ: the demon | sarve: and all of them there | ūcuḥ: spoke (as follows) | prāṅjalayaḥ: with their joined palms. |

TRANSLATION

Hearing the words of Rama, the monkey-chiefs, the monkeys, Vibhishana the demon and all of them there, with their joined palms, spoke (as follows):

VERSE 19

अयोध्यां गन्तुमिच्छामः सर्वान् नयतु नो भवान्

ayodhyāṃ gantumicchāmaḥ sarvān nayatu no bhavān

SYNONYMS

icchāmi: we (also) wish | gantum: to proceed | ayodhyām: to Ayodhya | bhavān: you | nayatu: take | sarvān naḥ: all of us there | vicariṣyāmah: we shall range | vanāni: the gardens | upavanānica: and groves | mudyuktāḥ: with rejoice. |

TRANSLATION

"We also wish to proceed to Ayodhya. You take all of us there we shall range the gardens and groves there with rejoice."

VERSE 20

दृष्ट्वा त्वामभिषेकार्द्रं कौसल्यामभिवाद्य च

dṛṣṭvā tvāmabhiṣekārdraṃ kausalyāmabhivādya ca

SYNONYMS

nṛpasattama: O the excellent king! | dṛṣṭvā: seeing | tvām: you | abhiṣekārdram: drenched with ablution (in the coronation-ceremony) | abhivādya ca: and offering our salutations | kausalyām: to Kausalya | acirām āgamiṣyāmaḥ: we shall soon return | svagṛhān: to our homes. |

TRANSLATION

"O the excellent king! Seeing you, drench with ablution (in the coronation ceremony) and offering our salutations to Kausalya, we shall return to our homes."

VERSE 21

एवमुक्तः स धर्मात्मा वानरैः सविभीषणैः

evamuktaḥ sa dharmātmā vānaraiḥ savibhīṣaṇaiḥ

SYNONYMS

evam: thus | uktaḥ: spoken | vānaraiḥ: by the monkeys | savibhīṣaṇaiḥ: and Vibhishana | saḥ dharmātmā rāmaḥ: that pious minded Rama | abravīt: spoke | vānarān: to the monkeys | sasugrīva vibhīṣaṇān: Sugreeva and Vibhishana (as follows): |

TRANSLATION

Hearing those words of the monkeys and Vibhishana, that pious-minded Rama spoke to those monkeys, Sugreeva and Vibhishana as follows:

VERSE 22

प्रियाअत्प्रियतरं लब्धं यदहं ससुहृज्जनः

priyāatpriyataraṃ labdhaṃ yadahaṃ sasuhṛjjanaḥ

SYNONYMS

priyataram: something more dearer | priyāt: than everything dear | labdham: will be achieved (by me) | yat aham gataḥ purīm: if I reach Ayodhya | sasuhṛjjanaḥ: with the host of my friends | sarvaiḥ bhavadbhiḥ sahitaḥ: and with all of you | prītim lapsye: for |

TRANSLATION

"Something more dearer than everything dear will be achieved by me, if I reach Ayodhya with the host of my friends along with all of you, for, I shall feel delighted."

VERSE 23

क्षिप्रमारोह सुग्रीव विमानं वानरैः सह

kṣipramāroha sugrīva vimānaṃ vānaraiḥ saha

SYNONYMS

sugrīva: O Sugreeva! | āroha: Mount | vimānam: the aerial car | kṣipram: quickly | vānaraiḥ saha: along with the monkeys | vibhīṣana: O Vibhishana | rākṣasendra: the king of demons! | tvam api ārhoha: you also ascend it | sāmātyaḥ: along with your counsellors. |

TRANSLATION

"O Sugreeva! Mount the aerial cars quickly, along with the monkeys. O Vibhishana, the king of demons! You also ascend it, along with your counsellors."

VERSE 24

ततह् स पुष्पकं दिव्यं सुग्रीवः सह वानरैः

tatah sa puṣpakaṃ divyaṃ sugrīvaḥ saha vānaraiḥ

SYNONYMS

tataḥ: thereupon | saḥ sugrīvaḥ: that Sugreeva | vānaraiḥ saha: along with the monkeys | mudā yuktaḥ: gladly | āruroha: ascended | divyam: the wonderful | puṣpakam: Pushpaka | vibhiṣanaśca: as also Vibhishana | sāmātyaḥ: together with his counsellors. |

TRANSLATION

Thereupon, that Sugreeva along with the monkeys gladly ascended that wonderful Pushpaka, the aerial car. Vibhishana together with his counselors also ascended it.

VERSE 25

तेष्वारूढेषु सर्वेषु कौबेरम् परमासनम्

teṣvārūḍheṣu sarveṣu kauberam paramāsanam

SYNONYMS

teṣu sarveṣu: when all of them | ārūḍheṣu: ascended | paramāsanam: that excellent aerial car | kauberam: belonging to Kubera | utpapāta: flew | vihāyasam: into the sky | abhyanujñātam: after having been duly authorized | rāghaveṇa: by Rama. |

TRANSLATION

When all of them ascended, that excellent aerial car, belonging to Kubera, flew into the sky, after having been duly authorized by Rama.

VERSE 26

खगतेन मिवानेन हंसयुक्तेन भास्वता

khagatena mivānena haṃsayuktena bhāsvatā

SYNONYMS

prahṛṣṭaśca: feeling greatly rejoiced | pratītaśca: and satisfied | bhāsvatā vimānena: while travelling in the splendid aerial car | khagatena: which was now in the air | hamsayuktena: and was provided with the image of swan | rāmaḥ: Rama | babhau: shone | kuberavat: like Kubera. |

TRANSLATION

Feeling greatly rejoiced and satisfied while travelling in that splendid aerial car, which was now in the air and was provided with the image of a swan, Rama shone like Kubera.

VERSE 27

इत्यार्षे श्रीमद्रामायणे आदिकाव्ये युद्धकाण्डे द्वाविंशत्यधिकशततमः सर्गः

ityārṣe śrīmadrāmāyaṇe ādikāvye yuddhakāṇḍe dvāviṃśatyadhikaśatatamaḥ sargaḥ

SYNONYMS

te sarve: all those | mahābalāḥ: mighty | vānaraḥ: monkeys | ṛkṣaḥ: bears | rākṣasāśca: and demons | upāviśan: sat | asambādham: spaciously | yathā sukham: and comfortably | divye tasmin: in that wonderful aerial car. |

TRANSLATION

All those mighty monkeys, bears and demons sat comfortably and spaciously in that wonderful aerial car.
