VERSE 1

तां रात्रिमुषितं रामं सुखोदितमरिंदमम्
अब्रवीत् प्राञ्जलिर्वाक्यं जयम् पृष्ट्वा विभीषणः

tāṃ rātrimuṣitaṃ rāmaṃ sukhoditamariṃdamam
abravīt prāñjalirvākyaṃ jayam pṛṣṭvā vibhīṣaṇaḥ

SYNONYMS

vibhiśanaḥ: Vibhishana | pṛṣṭvā: wishing | jayan: victory | rāmam: to Rama | arimdamam: the destroyer of adversaries | uṣitam tām rātrim: who having reposed during the previous night | sukhoditam: had risen fresh | abravīt: spoke | vākyam: the following words | prāṅjalim: with joined palms. |

TRANSLATION

Vibhishana, wishing victory to Rama, (the destroyer of adversaries) who having reposed during the previous night and had risen fresh, spoke to him with joined palms, the following words:

VERSE 2

स्नानानि चाङ्गारागाणि वस्त्राण्याभरणानि च
चन्दनानि च माल्यानि दिव्यानि विविधानि च

snānāni cāṅgārāgāṇi vastrāṇyābharaṇāni ca
candanāni ca mālyāni divyāni vividhāni ca

SYNONYMS

-3| etāḥ nāryaḥ: these women | padmanibhekṣaṇāḥ: with lotus-like eyes | alamkāra vidaḥ: who are skilled in the art of decoration | upasthitāḥ: came | snānāni: with bathing accessories | aṅgarāgāṇi: (like) cosmetics | vastrāṇi: garments | candanāni ca: sandal-pastels | divyāni vividhāni mālyāni ca: and beautiful garlands of various kinds | vidhivat tvām snāpayiṣyanti: they will duly assist you in bathing | rāghava: O Rama! |

TRANSLATION

"These women with lotus-like eyes, who are skilled in the art of decoration, came with bathing accessories like garments, ornaments, sandal-pastes and beautiful garlands of various kinds. They will assist you in bathing O Rama!"

VERSE 4

एवमुक्तस्तु काकुत्स्थः प्रत्युवाच विभीषणम्
हरीन् सुग्रीवमुख्यांस्त्वं स्नानेनोपनिमन्त्रय

evamuktastu kākutsthaḥ pratyuvāca vibhīṣaṇam
harīn sugrīvamukhyāṃstvaṃ snānenopanimantraya

SYNONYMS

evam: thus | uktaiḥ: spoken | kākutthsa: Rama | pratyuvāca: replied | vibhīṣaṇam: To Vibhishana (as follows) | tvam: you | upanimantraya: invite | harīn: the monkeys | sugrīva pramukhān: headed by Sugreeva | snānena: for the bath. |

TRANSLATION

Hearing the words of Vibhishana, Rama replied as follows: "You invite the monkeys headed by Sugreeva for the bath."

VERSE 5

सत् उ ताम्यति धर्मात्मा मम हेतोः सुखोचितः
सुकुमारो महाबाहुर्भरतः सत्यसंस्रयः

sat u tāmyati dharmātmā mama hetoḥ sukhocitaḥ
sukumāro mahābāhurbharataḥ satyasaṃsrayaḥ

SYNONYMS

saḥ bharataḥ: that Bharata | dharmātmā: the virtuous man | sukhocitaḥ: who was accustomed to comfort | sukumāraḥ: a delicate youth | mahābāhuḥ: the great-armed | saty samśrayaḥ: and the one consistent with the Truth | tāmyati: is suffering | mama hetoḥ: on my account. |

TRANSLATION

"That Bharata, the virtuous man, who was accustomed to comfort, a delicate youth, the great-armed and the one consistent with the truth is suffering on my account."

VERSE 6

तं विना कैकयीपुत्रम् भरतं धर्मचारिणम्
न मे स्नानं बहुमतं वस्त्राण्यानि च

taṃ vinā kaikayīputram bharataṃ dharmacāriṇam
na me snānaṃ bahumataṃ vastrāṇyāni ca

SYNONYMS

tam bharatam vinā: In the absence of that Bharata | kaikayīputram: the son of Kaikeyi | dharmacāriṇam: who is practicing virtue | snānam: (ritual) bathing | na bahumatam: is not a liking | me: to me | vastrāṇi: (nor) the garments | ābharāṇi ca: (nor) the jewels. |

TRANSLATION

In the absence of Bharata, the son of Kaikeyi, who is practicing virtue, ritual bathing, garments and jewels are not to my liking."

VERSE 7

एतत् पश्य यथा क्षिप्रं प्रतिगच्छाम ताम् पुरीम्
अयोध्याम् गच्छतो ह्येष पन्थाह् परमदुर्गमः

etat paśya yathā kṣipraṃ pratigacchāma tām purīm
ayodhyām gacchato hyeṣa panthāh paramadurgamaḥ

SYNONYMS

paśya: see | yathā: how | etat: this (we may) | pratigacchāma: return | tām purīm: to that City of Ayodhya | eṣaḥ panthāh: this path | parama durgamaḥ hi: is indeed very difficult to be travelled over | gacchataḥ: (for anyone) proceeding | ayodhyām: to Ayodhya City. |

TRANSLATION

"See how we may return to that City of Ayodhya soon. It is indeed very difficult to travel over this path to reach Ayodhya City, so soon."

VERSE 8

एवमुक्तस्तु काकुत्स्थं प्रत्युवाच विभीषणः
अह्ना त्वां प्रापयिष्यामि ताम् पुरीं पार्थिवात्मज

evamuktastu kākutsthaṃ pratyuvāca vibhīṣaṇaḥ
ahnā tvāṃ prāpayiṣyāmi tām purīṃ pārthivātmaja

SYNONYMS

evam: thus | uktaḥ: spoken | vibhīṣaṇaḥ: Vibhishana | pratyuvāca: replied | kākutthsam: to Rama (as follows): | pārthivātmaja: O prince! | prāpayiṣyāmi: I will get | tvām: you | tām purīm: to that City | āhanā: in a day. |

TRANSLATION

Hearing the words of Rama, Vibhishana replied : "O prince! I will get you t that City in a day."

VERSE 9

पुष्पकं नाम भद्रं ते विमानं सूर्यसम्निभम्
मम भ्रातुः कुबेरस्य रावणेन बलीयसा

puṣpakaṃ nāma bhadraṃ te vimānaṃ sūryasamnibham
mama bhrātuḥ kuberasya rāvaṇena balīyasā

SYNONYMS

-10| atula vikrama: O Rama of unequalled prowess! | vimānam: the aerial car | sūryasamnibham: shining like the sun | kāmagam: which moves as one pleases | divyam: wonderful | uttamam: and excellent | puṣpakam nāma: called Pushpaka | kuberasya: of Kubera | mama bhrātā: my brother | hṛtam: was robbed | bālīyasā rāvanena: by the mighty Ravana | nirjatya: after conquering Kubera | samgrāme: in battle | te bhadram: may prosperity attend you! | idam: it | tiṣṭhati: is there | pālitam: retained | tvadartham: for you sake. |

TRANSLATION

"O Rama of unequalled prowess! The aerial car shining like the sun, which moves as one pleases, wonderful and excellent, named Pushpaka of Kubera my brother was robbed by the mighty Ravana after conquering Kubera in battle. May prosperity attend you! It is retained there for your sake."

VERSE 11

तदिदं मेघसंकाशं विमानमिह तिष्ठति
येन यास्यसि यानेन त्वमयोध्यां गतज्वरः

tadidaṃ meghasaṃkāśaṃ vimānamiha tiṣṭhati
yena yāsyasi yānena tvamayodhyāṃ gatajvaraḥ

SYNONYMS

tat idam vimānam: she yonder aerial car | meghasamkāśam: looking like a cloud | iha tiṣṭhati: sands here | yena yānena: by which transport | tvam: you | yāsyasi: can reach ayodhyaam = to Ayodhya | vigatajvaraḥ: without any trouble. |

TRANSLATION

"The yonder aerial car, looking like a cloud, stands here and by which transport, you can reach Ayodhya without any trouble."

VERSE 12

अहम् ते यद्यनुग्राह्यो यदि स्मरसि मे गुणान्
वस तावदिह प्राज्ञ यद्यस्ति मयि सौहृदम्

aham te yadyanugrāhyo yadi smarasi me guṇān
vasa tāvadiha prājña yadyasti mayi sauhṛdam

SYNONYMS

prājña: O sagacious prince! | aham yadi anugrāhyaḥ: if I deserve to be treated with kindness | te: by you | sauhṛdam mayi asti yadi: if you have any affection in me | vasatāvat: remain | iha: here (for some more time). |

TRANSLATION

"O sagacious prince! If I deserve to be treated with kindness by you, if you think of any virtue in me and if you think of any virtue in me and if you have any affection in me, stay here for some more time."

VERSE 13

लक्ष्मणेन सह भ्रात्रा वैदेह्या भार्यया सह
अर्चितह् सर्वकामैस्त्वं ततो राम गमिष्यसि

lakṣmaṇena saha bhrātrā vaidehyā bhāryayā saha
arcitah sarvakāmaistvaṃ tato rāma gamiṣyasi

SYNONYMS

rāma: O Rama! | arcitaḥ: having been offered with reverence | sarva kāmaiḥ: all the entertainments tvam = you | bhrātrā lakṣmaṇena saha: along with Lakshmana your brother | bhāryayā vaidehyā saha: and together with Seetha | tataḥ gamiṣyasi: you may go |

TRANSLATION

"O Rama! When you have been offered with reference all the entertainments, you along with Lakshmana, your brother and Seetha your consort, shall then depart."

VERSE 14

प्रीतियुक्तस्य विहितां ससैन्यः ससुहृद्गणः
सत्क्रियां राम मे तावद्गृहाण त्वं मयोद्यताम्

prītiyuktasya vihitāṃ sasainyaḥ sasuhṛdgaṇaḥ
satkriyāṃ rāma me tāvadgṛhāṇa tvaṃ mayodyatām

SYNONYMS

rāma: O Rama! | gṛhāṇa tāvat: accept | tvam: you | sa sainyaḥ: along with the army | sasuhṛdgaṇaḥ: and assemblage of friends | me satkriyām: my hospitality | prītiyuktasya: endowed with affection | vihitām: fixed | udyatām: and arranged | mayā: by me. |

TRANSLATION

"O Rama! In the meantime, accept you, with your entire army and assemblage of friends, my hospitality which has been fixed and arranged by me, full of affection as I am."

VERSE 15

प्रणयाद्बहुमानाच्च सौहार्देन च राघव
प्रसादयामि प्रेष्यो।अहं न खल्वाज्ञापयामि ते

praṇayādbahumānācca sauhārdena ca rāghava
prasādayāmi preṣyo|ahaṃ na khalvājñāpayāmi te

SYNONYMS

rāghava: O Rama! | prasādayāmi: I entreat you | praṇayāt: with affection | bahumānācca: with honour | sauhārdena: and with friendship | aham: I am | preṣyaḥ: your servent | nājñāpayāmi khalu: I am not indeed commanding | te: you (to do so). |

TRANSLATION

"O Rama! I entreat you with affection, respect and friendship I am your servant. I am not in any way commanding you to do so."

VERSE 16

एवमुक्तस्ततो रामह् प्रत्युवाच विभीषणम्
रक्षसां वानराणां च सर्वेषमेव शृण्वताम्

evamuktastato rāmah pratyuvāca vibhīṣaṇam
rakṣasāṃ vānarāṇāṃ ca sarveṣameva śṛṇvatām

SYNONYMS

evam uktaḥ: thus spoken | rāmaḥ: Rama | tataḥ: then | pratyuvāca: replied | vibhīṣaṇam: to Vibhishana | sarveṣām rakṣasām: while all the demons | vānarāṇām ca: and the monkeys | śṛṅvatām: listened. |

TRANSLATION

Hearing those words, Rama replied to Vibhishana as follows, while all the demons and the monkeys present there, listened:

VERSE 17

पूजितो।अस्मि त्वया वीर साचिव्येन परंतप
सर्वत्मना च चेष्टाभिः सौहार्देन परेण च

pūjito|asmi tvayā vīra sācivyena paraṃtapa
sarvatmanā ca ceṣṭābhiḥ sauhārdena pareṇa ca

SYNONYMS

paramtapa: O destroyer of enemies! | vīra: O hero! | sācivyena: by your valued counsel | ceṣṭābhiḥ: by your efforts put forth | sarvātmanā: with your whole soul | pareṇa: and more so | sauhārdena: by your friendship | pūjitaḥ asmi: I stand honoured | tvayā: by you. |

TRANSLATION

"O destroyer of enemies! O hero! I stand honoured by you by your valued counsel, your efforts put forth with your whole soul and more so by your friendship.

VERSE 18

न खल्वेतन्न कुर्याम् ते वचनं राक्षसेश्वर
तं तु मे भ्रातरं द्रष्टुम् भरतं त्वरते मनः

na khalvetanna kuryām te vacanaṃ rākṣaseśvara
taṃ tu me bhrātaraṃ draṣṭum bharataṃ tvarate manaḥ

SYNONYMS

rākṣaseśvara: O the king of demons! | na kuryāmiti na khalu: It is not that I am not carrying out | etat vacanam: these words | te: of yours | tu: but | manaḥ: my heart | tvarate: is hastening | draṣṭum: to see | tam bharatam: that Bharata | bhrātaram: my brother. |

TRANSLATION

"O king of demons! It is not that I am not carrying out your words. But, my heart is hastening to see that Bharata, my brother."

VERSE 19

मां निवर्तयितुं यो।असौ चित्रकूटमुपागतः
शिरसा याचतो यस्य वचनम् न कृतं मया

māṃ nivartayituṃ yo|asau citrakūṭamupāgataḥ
śirasā yācato yasya vacanam na kṛtaṃ mayā

SYNONYMS

yaḥ asau: that Bharata | upāgataḥ: who came | citrakūṭam: all the way to Mount Chitrakuta | mama nivartayitum: to take me back (to Ayodhya) | yasya vacanam: yet whose appeal | na kṛtam: was not executed | mayā: by me | yācataḥ śirasā: eventhough he requested me with his head bent low | kausalyām ca: and Kausalya my mother | simitrām ca: as also Sumitra | yaśsvinīm kaikeyīmca: and the illustrious Kaikeyi (my step-mothers) | guham ca: and Guha | suhṛdan: my friend | paurān: as well as citizens of Ayodhya | jānapadaiḥ saha: and the inhabitants of the country-side. |

TRANSLATION

"My heart is hastening to see that Bharata, who came all the way to Mount Chitrakuta to take me back to Ayodhya, yet whose appeal was not executed by me, even though he requested me with his head bent low and Kausalya my mother as also Sumitra and the illustrious Kaikeyi (my step-mothers) as also Guha my friend, as well as the citizens of Ayodhya and the inhabitants of the country-side."

VERSE 21

अनुजानीहि मां सौम्य पूजितो।अस्मि विभीषण
मन्युर्न खलु कर्तव्यः सखे त्वां चानुमानये

anujānīhi māṃ saumya pūjito|asmi vibhīṣaṇa
manyurna khalu kartavyaḥ sakhe tvāṃ cānumānaye

SYNONYMS

saumya vibhīṣāṇa: O gentle Vibhishana! | anujānīhi: allow | mām: me (to go) | pūjitaḥ asmi: I am honoured | sakhe: O friend! | manyuḥ na kartavyaḥ: you need not be disappointed | anumānayeca: I entreat | tvām: you. |

TRANSLATION

"O gentle Vibhishana! Allow me to go. I am honoured. O friend! You need not be disappointed, I entreat you."

VERSE 22

उपस्थापय मे शीघ्रं विमानं राक्षसेश्वर
कृतकार्यस्य मे वासह् कथम् स्यादिह संमतः

upasthāpaya me śīghraṃ vimānaṃ rākṣaseśvara
kṛtakāryasya me vāsah katham syādiha saṃmataḥ

SYNONYMS

rākṣaseśvara: O the king of demons! | upasthāpaya: fetch | vimānam: the aerial car | śīghram: immediately | katham: how | sammataḥ syāt: is it advisable | vāsaḥ: for a stay | iha: here | me: for me | kṛtakāryasya: that my task has been accomplished. |

TRANSLATION

"O the king of demons! Fetch the aerial car immediately. How is it advisable for my continued stay here, now that my task has been accomplished?"

VERSE 23

एवमुक्तस्तु रामेण राक्षसेन्द्रो विभीषनः
विमानं सूर्यसम्काशमाजुहाव त्वरान्वितः

evamuktastu rāmeṇa rākṣasendro vibhīṣanaḥ
vimānaṃ sūryasamkāśamājuhāva tvarānvitaḥ

SYNONYMS

-28| evam: thus | uktaḥ: spoken | rāmeṇa: by Rama | vibhīṣaṇaḥ: Vibhishana | rākṣasendraḥ: the king of demons | tataḥ: then | tvarānvitaḥ: hastily | ājuhāva: invoked (the presence) | tam vimānam: of that aerial car | sūryasamkāśam: shining like the sun | kāṇcana citrāṅgam: with colourful parts made of gold | vaiḍūryamaṇi vedikam: with platform made of cat's-eye gems | kūṭāgāraiḥ: which was full of attics | sarvataḥ parikliptam rajataprabham: shone like silver on all sides | samalamkṛtam: decorated well | pāṅḍurābhiḥ: with white | patākābhiḥ: flags | dhvajaiśca: and flag-staffs | vibhūṣitaiḥ: decked | kāṇcanam: with gold | hema padma: and golden lotuses | kāṇcanaiḥ harmaiḥ: graced with golden mansions | prakīrṇam: hung all over | kiṇkiṇījālaiḥ: with net works of tiny bells | muktā maṇi gavākṣakam: containing eye holes set | madhura svanam: giving forth a melodious sound | sarvataḥ: on all sides | meru śikharākāram: resembling a summit of Mount Meru | nimitam: built | viśvakarmaṇā: by Vishvakarma | śobhitaiḥ: which was graced | bṛhadbhiḥ harmyaiḥ: graced with stately palaces | muktā rajita śobhitaiḥ: decked with pearls and silver | talaiḥ: provided with pavements | sphaṭika citraṅgaiḥ: inlaid with crystal | upetam varāsanaiḥ: furnished with excellent seats | vaiḍūryaiśca: of cats eye gems | mahādhanaiḥ: of great value | mahārhāstaraṇopetaiḥ: and upholstered with highly | nivedayitvā: informing | rāmāya: Rama | tat vimānam: that the said aerial car | anādhṛṣyam: and was swift as thought | upasthitam: had arrived | tasthau: stood | tatra: there. |

TRANSLATION

Hearing the words of Rama, Vibhishana the king of demons then hastily invoked the presence of that aerial car shining like the sun, with colourful parts made of gold, with the platform made of cat's-eye gems, which was full of attics, shone like silver on all sides, decorated well with white flags and flag-staff, decked with gold and golden lotuses, graced with golden mansions, hung all over with networks of tiny bells, giving forth a melodious sound on all sides, resembling a summit of Mount Meru, built by Vishvakarma, which was graced with stately palaces decked with pearls and silver, provided with pavements inlaid with crystal, furnished with excellent seats of cat's eye gems of great value and upholstered with highly valuable coverings.

VERSE 29

उपस्थितमनाधृष्यं तद्विमानं मनोजवम्
निवेदयित्वा रामायतस्थौ तत्र विभीषणः

upasthitamanādhṛṣyaṃ tadvimānaṃ manojavam
nivedayitvā rāmāyatasthau tatra vibhīṣaṇaḥ

SYNONYMS

nivedayitvā: informing | rāmāya: Rama | tat vimānam: that the said aerial car | anādhṛṣyam: which could not be assailed | manojavam: and was swift as thought | upasthitam: had arrived | vibhīṣaṇaḥ: Vibhishana | tasthau: stood | tatra: there. |

TRANSLATION

Informing Rama that the said aerial car which could not be assailed and was as swift as though- had arrived, Vibhishana stood there.

VERSE 30

इत्यार्षे श्रीमद्रामायणे आदिकाव्ये युद्धकाण्डे एकविंशत्यधिकशततमः सर्गः

ityārṣe śrīmadrāmāyaṇe ādikāvye yuddhakāṇḍe ekaviṃśatyadhikaśatatamaḥ sargaḥ

SYNONYMS

udārasattvaḥ: the generous minded | rāmaḥ: Rama | sasaumitriḥ: along with Lakshmana | ājagāma: got | vismayam: a surprise | dṛṣṭvā: in seeing | tat: that | vimānam: aerial car | puṣpakam: called Pushpaka | bhūdhara samnikāśam: which resembled a mountain | kāmagamam: and which could travel everywhere at will |

TRANSLATION

The generous minded Rama along with Lakshmana felt amazed to see the aforesaid aerial car, Pushpaka, which resembled a mountain and which could travel everywhere at will, arrived on that occasion.
