VERSE 1

एतच्छ्रुत्वा शुभं वाक्यं राघवेण सुभाषितम्
इदं शुभतरं वाक्यं व्याजहार महेश्वरः

etacchrutvā śubhaṃ vākyaṃ rāghaveṇa subhāṣitam
idaṃ śubhataraṃ vākyaṃ vyājahāra maheśvaraḥ

SYNONYMS

śrutvā: hearing | śubham: the auspicious | vākyam: words | etat: thus | anubhāṣitam: spoken | rāghaveṇa: by Rama | maheśvaraḥ: Lord Shiva | tataḥ: thereupon | vyājahāra śubhataram vākyam: delivered the following still more beautiful speech: |

TRANSLATION

Hearing the auspicious words thus spoken by Rama, Lord Shiva the Supreme Lord thereupon delivered the following still more beautiful speech:

VERSE 2

पुष्कराक्ष महाबाहो महावक्षः परन्तप
दिष्ट्या कृतमिदं कर्म त्वया शस्त्रभृतां वर

puṣkarākṣa mahābāho mahāvakṣaḥ parantapa
diṣṭyā kṛtamidaṃ karma tvayā śastrabhṛtāṃ vara

SYNONYMS

puṣkarākṣa: O lotus eyed | mahābāho: long armed | mahāvakṣaḥ: broad chested | paramtapa: the annihilator of adversaries | vara: and excellent | dharma bhṛtām: among those upholding the cause of virtue! | idam karma: this task | kṛtam: was accomplished | tvaya: by you | diṣṭyā: thank heaven!. |

TRANSLATION

"O lotus-eyed, long-armed, broad-chested, annihilator of enemies and excellent among those upholding the cause of virtue! Thank heaven! You accomplished this task."

VERSE 3

दिष्ट्या सर्वस्य लोकस्य प्रवृद्धं दारुणं तमः
अपावृत्तं त्वया सङ्ख्ये राम रावणजं भयम्

diṣṭyā sarvasya lokasya pravṛddhaṃ dāruṇaṃ tamaḥ
apāvṛttaṃ tvayā saṅkhye rāma rāvaṇajaṃ bhayam

diṣṭyā: fortunately | bhayam: has the fear | rāvaṇajam: born of Ravana | pravṛddham: which increased | daruṇam: the severe | tamaḥ: darkness | sarvasya lokasya: on the entire world | apāvṛtam: has been removed | tvayā: by you | samkhye: on the battle-field | rāma: O |

TRANSLATION

"Fortunately has the fear born of Ravana - which increased the severe darkness on the entire world has been removed by you, on the battle-field, O Rama!"

VERSE 4

आश्वास्य भरतं दीनं कौसल्यां च यशस्विनीम्
कैकेयीं च सुमित्रां च दृष्ट्वा लक्ष्मणमातरम्

āśvāsya bharataṃ dīnaṃ kausalyāṃ ca yaśasvinīm
kaikeyīṃ ca sumitrāṃ ca dṛṣṭvā lakṣmaṇamātaram

TRANSLATION

"You are fit to go to the heaven, by comforting the depressed Bharata and the illustrious Kausalya as well as seeing Kaikeyi and Sumitra, the mother of Lakshmana having got the sovereignty of Ayodhya, bringing delight to your friends, stabilizing the back-bone in the race of Ikshvaku, getting excellent glory by performing a horse-sacrifice and by granting riches to Brahmanas."

VERSE 7

एष राजा विमानस्थः पिता दशरथस्तव
काकुत्स्थ मानुषे लोके गुरुस्तव महायशाः

eṣa rājā vimānasthaḥ pitā daśarathastava
kākutstha mānuṣe loke gurustava mahāyaśāḥ

SYNONYMS

eṣaḥ: this | rājā: king | daśarathaḥ: Dasaratha | tava: your | pitā: father | mānuṣe loke: in this mortal world | mahāyaśāḥ guruḥ: the highly glorious and venerable person | vimānasthaḥ: is seated in an aerial car | kākutthsa: O Rama! |

TRANSLATION

"This king Dasaratha, your father in this mortal world and the highly glorious as well as the venerable person, is seated in an aerial car, O Rama!"

VERSE 8

इन्द्रलोकं गतः श्रीमांस्त्वया पुत्रेण तारितः
लक्ष्मणेन सह भ्रात्रा त्वमेनमभिवादय

indralokaṃ gataḥ śrīmāṃstvayā putreṇa tāritaḥ
lakṣmaṇena saha bhrātrā tvamenamabhivādaya

SYNONYMS

tāritaḥ: having been delivered | tvayā: by you | putreṇa: his (godly) son | śrīmān: the glorious king | gataḥ: obtained | indralokam: the abode of Indra the lord of celestials | tvam abhivādaya: you offer your respectful salutation | enam: to him | bhrātā lakṣmaṇena saha: along with Lakshmana |

TRANSLATION

"Having been delivered by you, his (godly) son, the glorious king obtained the abode of Indra the lord of celestials. you offer your respectful salutation to him, along with Lakshmana, your brother."

VERSE 9

महादेववचः श्रुत्वा काकुत्स्थः सहलक्ष्मणः
विमानशिखरस्थस्य प्रणाममकरोत्पितुः

mahādevavacaḥ śrutvā kākutsthaḥ sahalakṣmaṇaḥ
vimānaśikharasthasya praṇāmamakarotpituḥ

SYNONYMS

śrutvā: hearing | mahādeva vacah: the words of Shiva | rāghavaḥ: Rama | saha lakṣmaṇaḥ: along with lakshmana | bhrātrā: his brother | praṇāmam: offered their salutation | pituḥ: to their father | vimāna śikharasthasya: seated on the topmost part of an aerial car. |

TRANSLATION

Hearing the words of Shiva, Rama along with Lakshmana his brother, offered their salutation to their father, seated on the topmost part of an aerial car.

VERSE 10

दीप्यमानं स्वयां लक्ष्म्या विरजोअम्बरधारिणम्
लक्ष्मणेन सह भ्रात्रा ददर्श पितरं प्रभुः

dīpyamānaṃ svayāṃ lakṣmyā virajoambaradhāriṇam
lakṣmaṇena saha bhrātrā dadarśa pitaraṃ prabhuḥ

SYNONYMS

prabhuḥ: the lord Rama | bhrātrā lakṣmaṇena: along with lakshmana his brother | dadarśa: saw | pitaram: their father | dīpyamānam: who was lazing | svayā lakṣmyā: with his own splendour | virājo'mbara dhāriṇam: and clad in brilliant garments. |

TRANSLATION

The lord Rama along with Lakshmana his brother saw their father, who was blazing with his own splendour and clad in brilliant garments.

VERSE 11

हर्षेण महताविष्टो विमानस्थो महीपतिः
प्राणैः प्रियतरं दृष्ट्वा पुत्रं दशरथस्तदा

harṣeṇa mahatāviṣṭo vimānastho mahīpatiḥ
prāṇaiḥ priyataraṃ dṛṣṭvā putraṃ daśarathastadā

SYNONYMS

TRANSLATION

Then the king Dasaratha the lord who was sitting in the aerial car, in an excellent seat, was filled with excessive delight to see his son (Rama), who was dearer to him than life. Placing him in his lap and embracing him in his arms, he thereupon commenced his speech as follows:

VERSE 13

न मे स्वर्गो बहुमतः संमानश्च सुरर्षिभिः
त्वया राम विहीनस्य सत्यं प्रतिशृणोमि ते

na me svargo bahumataḥ saṃmānaśca surarṣibhiḥ
tvayā rāma vihīnasya satyaṃ pratiśṛṇomi te

SYNONYMS

rāma: O Rama! | vihīnasya: separated from | tvayā: you | svargaḥ: the heaven | na bahumataḥ: is not a liking | me: to me | sammānaśca: (nor) the respect given to me | surarṣabhaiḥ: by the foremost of celstials | pratiśṛṇomi: I am telling | te: you | satyam: the truth. |

TRANSLATION

"O Rama! Separated from you, the heaven is not a liking to me, nor the respect given to me by the foremost of celestials. I am telling you the truth."

VERSE 14

अद्य त्वां निहतामित्रं दृष्ट्वा संपूर्णमानसम्
निस्तीर्णवनवासं च प्रीतिरासीत्परा मम

adya tvāṃ nihatāmitraṃ dṛṣṭvā saṃpūrṇamānasam
nistīrṇavanavāsaṃ ca prītirāsītparā mama
6-119-14

SYNONYMS

adya: today | prītiāsīt: there is a great joy | mama: for me | dṛṣṭvā: for having seen | tvām: you | nihitāmitram: by whom the enemies have been destroyed | sampūrṇa mānasam: fully satisfied in your mind | vistīrṇavana vāsam: and having fully gone through the period of your exile. |

TRANSLATION

"Today, there is a great joy for me, for having seen you, fully satisfied in your mind, now that your enemies have been destroyed and you have fully gone through the period of exile."

VERSE 15

कैकेय्या यानि चोक्तानि वाक्यानि वदतां वर
तव प्रव्राजनार्थानि स्थितानि हृदये मम

kaikeyyā yāni coktāni vākyāni vadatāṃ vara
tava pravrājanārthāni sthitāni hṛdaye mama

SYNONYMS

vara: O excellent | vadatām: among the eloquent! | vākyāni: the words | yāni: which | uktāni: were uttered | kaikeyyā: by Kaikeyi | tava pravrajanārthām: with an aim to send you into exile | tāni: those words | sthitāni: are (still) imprinted mama hR^idayaani = in my heart. |

TRANSLATION

"O excellent among the eloquent! The words, which were uttered by Kaikeyi, with an aim to send you into exile, are still imprinted in my heart."

VERSE 16

त्वां तु दृष्ट्वा कुशलिनं परिष्वज्य सलक्ष्मणम्
अद्य दुःखाद्विमुक्तोअस्मि नीहारादिव भास्करः

tvāṃ tu dṛṣṭvā kuśalinaṃ pariṣvajya salakṣmaṇam
adya duḥkhādvimuktoasmi nīhārādiva bhāskaraḥ

SYNONYMS

dṛṣṭvā: seeing | tvām: you | salakṣmaṇam: along with Lakshmana | kuśalinam: in fine fettle | pariṣvajya: and hugging you | adya: today | vimuktaḥ asmi: I stand completely rid | duḥkhāt: of sorrow | bhāskaraḥ iva: even as the sun | nīhārādiva: (is freed from) mist. |

TRANSLATION

"Seeing you in a fine fettle with Lakshmana and hugging you today, I stand completely rid of sorrow - even as the sun is freed from mist."

VERSE 17

तारितोअहं त्वया पुत्र सुपुत्रेण महात्मना
अष्टावक्रेण धर्मात्मा तारितो ब्राह्मणो यथा

tāritoahaṃ tvayā putra suputreṇa mahātmanā
aṣṭāvakreṇa dharmātmā tārito brāhmaṇo yathā

SYNONYMS

mahātmānā: O great-souled | putra: son! | aham: I | tāritaḥ: have been redeemed | tvayā: by you | suputreṇa: my worthy son! | kaholaḥ brāhmaṇo yathā: even as Kahola | dharmātmā: who was virtuous | aṣṭāvakreṇa: (was redeemed) by Ashtavakra. |

TRANSLATION

"O great-souled son! I have been redeemed by you, my worthy son, even as Kahola a brahmana was redeemed by Ashtavakra."

VERSE 18

इदानीं च विजानामि यथा सौम्य सुरेश्वरैः
वधार्थं रावणस्येह विहितं पुरुषोत्तमम्

idānīṃ ca vijānāmi yathā saumya sureśvaraiḥ
vadhārthaṃ rāvaṇasyeha vihitaṃ puruṣottamam

SYNONYMS

saumya: O gentle one! vijaanaami = I recognize you | idānīm ca: now | puruṣottama: to be the Supreme person | yathā vihitam: duly enjoined | iha: here | sureśvaraiḥ: by the rulers of gods | rāvaṇasya vadhārtham: for the destruction of Ravana. |

TRANSLATION

"O gently one! I recognize you now to be the Supreme person, duly enjoined here by the rulers of gods, for the destruction of Ravana."

VERSE 19

सिद्धार्था खलु कौसल्या या त्वां राम गृहं गतम्
वनान्निवृत्तं संहृष्टा द्रक्ष्यते शत्रुसूदन

siddhārthā khalu kausalyā yā tvāṃ rāma gṛhaṃ gatam
vanānnivṛttaṃ saṃhṛṣṭā drakṣyate śatrusūdana

SYNONYMS

siddhārthā khalu: blessed indeed | kausalyā: is Kausalya | yādrakṣyati tvam: who will see you | śatru sūdanam: the destroyer of your enemies | nivṛttam: returned | gatam: and got | gṛham: home | ranāt: from the forest. |

TRANSLATION

"Blessed indeed is Kausalya, who will see you, the destroyer of your enemies, returned home from the forest."

VERSE 20

सिद्धार्थाः खलु ते राम नरा ये त्वां पुरीं गतम्
राज्ये चैवाभिषिक्तं च द्रक्ष्यन्ति वसुधाधिपम्

siddhārthāḥ khalu te rāma narā ye tvāṃ purīṃ gatam
rājye caivābhiṣiktaṃ ca drakṣyanti vasudhādhipam

SYNONYMS

siddhārthāḥ khalu: blessed indeed | te narāḥ: are those men | ye drakṣyante: who will see you | gatam: returned | purīm: to the City (of Ayodhya) | rājyam abhiṣiktam ca: and consecrated on the throne | vasudhādhipam: as a lord of the earth. |

TRANSLATION

"Blessed indeed are those men, who will see you returned to the City of Ayodhya and consecrated on the throne as a lord of the earth."

VERSE 21

अनुरक्तेन बलिना शुचिना धर्मचारिणा
इच्छेयं त्वामहं द्रष्टुं भरतेन समागतम्

anuraktena balinā śucinā dharmacāriṇā
iccheyaṃ tvāmahaṃ draṣṭuṃ bharatena samāgatam

SYNONYMS

aham: I | iccheyam: desire | draṣṭum: to see | tvām: you | samāgatam: re united | bharatena: with Bharata | anuraktena: who has affection towards you | balinā: who is strong | śucinā: who is honest | dharmacāriṇā: and virtuous. |

TRANSLATION

"I desire to see you, re-united with the mighty Bharata, who is affectionate towards you, honest and virtuous."

VERSE 22

चतुर्दशसमाः सौम्य वने निर्यापितास्त्वया
वसता सीतया सार्धं लक्ष्मणेन च धीमता

caturdaśasamāḥ saumya vane niryāpitāstvayā
vasatā sītayā sārdhaṃ lakṣmaṇena ca dhīmatā

SYNONYMS

saumya: O gentle one! | caturdaśa: fourteen | samāḥ: years | niryātitāḥ: were spent | tvayā: by you | vasatā: residing in the forest | dhīmatā lakṣmaṇena: along with the intelligent Lakshmana | sītāya sārtham: and with Seetha. |

TRANSLATION

"O gentle one! You spent fourteen years, residing in the forest with Lakshmana and Seetha."

VERSE 23

निवृत्तवनवासोअसि प्रतिज्ञा सफला कृता
रावणं च रणे हत्वा देवास्ते परितोषिताः

nivṛttavanavāsoasi pratijñā saphalā kṛtā
rāvaṇaṃ ca raṇe hatvā devāste paritoṣitāḥ

SYNONYMS

pratiñā: my pledge | puritā: was implemented | tvayā: by you | asi nivṛtta vanavāsaḥ: you completed the term of your exile | hatvā: by your killing | rāvaṇam: Ravana | raṇe: in battle | devatāh ca: celestials too | paritoṣitāḥ: have been fully gratified. |

TRANSLATION

"You completed the term of your exile. My pledge was implemented by you. The celestials too have been fully gratified, by your killing of Ravana in battle."

VERSE 24

कृतं कर्म यशः श्लाघ्यं प्राप्तं ते शत्रुसूदन
भ्रातृभिः सह राज्यस्थो दीर्घमायुरवाप्नुहि

kṛtaṃ karma yaśaḥ ślāghyaṃ prāptaṃ te śatrusūdana
bhrātṛbhiḥ saha rājyastho dīrghamāyuravāpnuhi

SYNONYMS

śatrusūdana: O the destroyer of enemies! | ślāghyam karma: a landable act | kṛtam: has been done | yaśaḥ: glory | prāptam: has been earned | te: to you (by you) | rājyasthaḥ: being in a kingly role | bhrātṛbhiḥ saha: along with your brothers | avāpnuhi: may you attain | dīrgham: a long | āyuḥ: life. |

TRANSLATION

"O the destroyer of enemies! A laudable act has been done and glory has been earned by you. Getting consecrated on the throne, may you attain a long life, along with your brothers."

VERSE 25

इति ब्रुवाणं राजानं रामः प्राञ्जलिरब्रवीत्
कुरु प्रसादं धर्मज्ञ कैकेय्या भरतस्य च

iti bruvāṇaṃ rājānaṃ rāmaḥ prāñjalirabravīt
kuru prasādaṃ dharmajña kaikeyyā bharatasya ca

SYNONYMS

rāmaḥ: Rama | prāṅjaliḥ: with joined palms in salutation | abravīt: spoke | rājānam: to dasaratha | bruvāṇam: who was speaking | iti: thus | kuru prasādam: be gracious | kaikeyyāḥ: to kaikeyi | bharatasya: and Bharata | dharmaña: O the knower of virtues! |

TRANSLATION

To Dasaratha, who was thus speaking, Rama with joined palms in salutation, submitted (as follows): "Be gracious to Kaikeyi and Bharata, O the knower of virtues!"

VERSE 26

सपुत्रां त्वां त्यजामीति यदुक्ता कैकयी त्वया
स शापः कैकयीं घोरः सपुत्रां न स्पृशेत्प्रभो

saputrāṃ tvāṃ tyajāmīti yaduktā kaikayī tvayā
sa śāpaḥ kaikayīṃ ghoraḥ saputrāṃ na spṛśetprabho

SYNONYMS

yat uktā: those words spoken | tvayā: by you | tyajāmīti: I disown | tvām: you | saputrām: and her son | saḥ ghoraḥ śāpaḥ: May that terrific curse | na spṛśet: not touch | kaikeyīm: Kaikeyi | prabho: O lord! |

TRANSLATION

You will remember those words spoken by you saying, I disown you, with your son (Bharata)'. May that terrific curse not touch Kaikeyi and her son, O Lord!"

VERSE 27

तथेति महाराजो राममुक्त्वा कृताञ्जलिम्
लक्ष्मणं च परिष्वज्य पुनर्वाक्यमुवाच ह

tatheti mahārājo rāmamuktvā kṛtāñjalim
lakṣmaṇaṃ ca pariṣvajya punarvākyamuvāca ha

SYNONYMS

mahārājaḥ: Dasaratha | uktvā: uttering | tatheti: 'May it be' | rāmam: to Rama | kṛtāṅjalim: who stood with joined palms | pariṣvajya: and having embraced | lakṣmaṇamca: Lakshmana | punaḥ: again | uvāca ha: spoke | vākkyam: the following words. |

TRANSLATION

Saying 'May it be" to Rama who stood with joined palms embraced Lakshmana. Dasaratha again uttered the following words to Lakshmana:

VERSE 28

रामं शुश्रूषता भक्त्या वैदेह्या सह सीतया
कृता मम महाप्रीतिः प्राप्तं धर्मफलं च ते

rāmaṃ śuśrūṣatā bhaktyā vaidehyā saha sītayā
kṛtā mama mahāprītiḥ prāptaṃ dharmaphalaṃ ca te

SYNONYMS

śuśruṣatā: by doing service | bhaktyā: with devotion | rāmam: to Rama | sītayā saha: and Seetha | vaidehyā: the princess of Videha kingdom | mahāprītiḥ: a great gratification | kṛtā: has been brought | mama: to me | dharma phalam ca: a religious merit too | prāptam: has been obtained | te: to you. |

TRANSLATION

"A great gratification has been rendered to me and reward in the form of religious merit earned by you in that you served Rama and Seetha, the princess of Videha kingdom, with devotion."

VERSE 29

धर्मं प्राप्स्यसि धर्मज्ञ यशश्च विपुलं भुवि
रामे प्रसन्ने स्वर्गं च महिमानं तथैव च

dharmaṃ prāpsyasi dharmajña yaśaśca vipulaṃ bhuvi
rāme prasanne svargaṃ ca mahimānaṃ tathaiva ca

SYNONYMS

rāme prasanne: Rama | prāpsyasi: you will attain | dharmam: religious merit | vipulam: and extensive | yaśaśca: glory | bhuvi: on earth | svargam ca: as also heaven | tathā uttamam mahimānam: and excellent power | dharmaña: O knower of righteousness!. |

TRANSLATION

"Rama, being pleased with you, you will attain religious merit and extensive glory on earth, as also heaven and excellent power O knower of righteousness!"

VERSE 30

रामं शुश्रूष भद्रं ते सुमित्रानन्दवर्धन
रामः सर्वस्य लोकस्य शुभेष्वभिरतः सदा

rāmaṃ śuśrūṣa bhadraṃ te sumitrānandavardhana
rāmaḥ sarvasya lokasya śubheṣvabhirataḥ sadā

SYNONYMS

te bhadram: happiness to you | sumitrānandavardhana: O the augmentor of the joy of Sumitra | śuśrūṣa: serve | rāmam: Rama (well) | rāmaḥ: Rama | sadā: forever | abirataḥ: is intent | sarva lokasya hitaḥ: on advancing the interests of the entire world. |

TRANSLATION

"Happiness to you, O the augmentor of the joy of Sumitra, your mother! Serve Rama well. Rama forever is intent on advancing the interests of the entire world."

VERSE 31

एते सेन्द्रास्त्रयो लोकाः सिद्धाश्च परमर्षयः
अभिगम्य महात्मानमर्चन्ति पुरुषोत्तमम्

ete sendrāstrayo lokāḥ siddhāśca paramarṣayaḥ
abhigamya mahātmānamarcanti puruṣottamam

SYNONYMS

ete: these | lokāḥ: 9three) worlds | sendrāḥ: including indra | siddhāśca: Siddhas (a class of demi-gods) | paramarṣayaḥ: and great sages | arcanti: pay homage to | mahātmānam: the great-souled | puruṣottamam: Rama as a supreme person | abhigamya: on approaching him. |

TRANSLATION

"These three worlds, including Indra Siddhas (a class of demi-gods) and great sages pay homage to the great-souled Rama as a Supreme person, on approaching him."

VERSE 32

एतत्तदुक्तमव्यक्तमक्षरं ब्रह्मनिर्मितम्
देवानां हृदयं सौम्य गुह्यं रामः परन्तपः

etattaduktamavyaktamakṣaraṃ brahmanirmitam
devānāṃ hṛdayaṃ saumya guhyaṃ rāmaḥ parantapaḥ

SYNONYMS

saumya: O gentle one! | paramtapa: O the destroyer of adversaries! | rāmaḥ: Rama | uktam: has been spoken of | avyaktam: as the unmanifest | akṣaram: and the imperishable | brahma: Brahama | nirmitam tat etat: established by the Vedas | hṛdayam: te heart | devānām: of gods | guhyam: and the secret (of all gods). |

TRANSLATION

"O great one! O the destroyer of adversaries! Rama has been spoken of as the unmanifest and the imperishable Brahama (the absolute), established by the Vedas, the heart of gods and the secret of all gods."

VERSE 33

अवाप्तं धर्मचरणं यशश्च विपुलं त्वया
एनं शुश्रूषता भक्त्या वैदेह्या सह सीतया

avāptaṃ dharmacaraṇaṃ yaśaśca vipulaṃ tvayā
enaṃ śuśrūṣatā bhaktyā vaidehyā saha sītayā

SYNONYMS

tvayā: by you | śuśrūṣatā: who served | enam vaidehyā sītayā saha: him along with Seetha the princess of Videha kingdom | bhaktyā: with devotion | avāptam: is obtained | dharmācaraṇam: the reward of the practice of all virtues | yaśaśca: as also celebrity | vipulam: abundantly. |

TRANSLATION

"Having served him, along with Seetha with devotion, you obtained the reward of the practice of all virtues as also celebrity, abundantly."

VERSE 34

इत्युक्त्वा लक्ष्मणं राजा स्नुषां बद्धाञ्जलिं स्थिताम्
पुत्रीत्याभाष्य मधुरं शनैरेनामुवाच ह

ityuktvā lakṣmaṇaṃ rājā snuṣāṃ baddhāñjaliṃ sthitām
putrītyābhāṣya madhuraṃ śanairenāmuvāca ha

SYNONYMS

iti uktvā: thus speaking | lakṣmaṇane: to Lakshmana | rājā: the king | ābhāṣya: addressing | snuṣām: his daughter-in-law | sthitām: standing (before him) | baddhāṅjalim: with joined palms | putri iti: as "My daughter" | śanaiḥ: slowly | madhuram: and affectionately | uvāca: advised | enām: her | iti: as follows: |

TRANSLATION

Thus speaking to Lakshmana, the (former) king, addressing his daughter-in-law standing before him with joined palms as "My daughter", slowly and affectionately advised her as follows:

VERSE 35

कर्तव्यो न तु वैदेहि मन्युस्त्यागमिमं प्रति
रामेण त्वद्विशुद्ध्यर्थं कृतमेतद्धितैषिणा

kartavyo na tu vaidehi manyustyāgamimaṃ prati
rāmeṇa tvadviśuddhyarthaṃ kṛtametaddhitaiṣiṇā

SYNONYMS

na manyuḥ: no wrath | tu: indeed | kartavyaḥ: should be rendered | imam tyāgam prati: towards Rama | itam kṛtam: this has been done | rāmeṇa: by Rama | tvaddhitaiṣiṇā: desiring your welfare | viśuddhyartham: and for the purpose of showing you purification. |

TRANSLATION

"No wrath indeed should be rendered by you towards Rama, for having repudiated you. This has been done by him, wishing for your welfare and in order to demostrate your purity."

VERSE 36

सुदुष्करमिदं पुत्रि तव चारित्रलक्षणम्
कृतं यत्ते।अन्यनारीणां यशो ह्यभिभविष्यति
६११९३६

suduṣkaramidaṃ putri tava cāritralakṣaṇam
kṛtaṃ yatte|anyanārīṇāṃ yaśo hyabhibhaviṣyati
6-119-36

SYNONYMS

suduṣkaram: is most difficult to perform | yat: which | kṛtam: has been done | te: of you | tava cāritra lakṣaṇam: and which reveals your true character | putri: my daughter | anyanārīṇām: for other ladies | abhibhariṣyati: and will overshadow | yaśaḥ: their illustriousness. |

TRANSLATION

"This act (of entering into fire) which has been done by you and which reveals your true character, my daughter, is the most difficult task to perform for other ladies and will overshadow their illustriousness."

VERSE 37

न त्वं सुभ्रु समाधेया पतिशुश्रूवणं प्रति
अवश्यं तु मया वाच्यमेष ते दैवतं परम्

na tvaṃ subhru samādheyā patiśuśrūvaṇaṃ prati
avaśyaṃ tu mayā vācyameṣa te daivataṃ param

SYNONYMS

tvam: you | na samādhyuā kāmam: need not be instructed | bhartṛ śuśrūṣaṇam prati: about the matter of rendering service to your husband | tu: but | vācyam: it is to be told | avaśyam: certainly | mayā: by me | eṣaḥ: he | te param: is your supreme | daivatam: deity. |

TRANSLATION

"You need not be instructed about the matter of rendering service to your husband. But, it is to be told certainly by me. He is your supreme deity."

VERSE 38

इति प्रतिसमादिश्य पुत्रौ सीतां तथा स्नुषाम्
इन्द्रलोकं विमानेन ययौ दशरथो ज्वलन्

iti pratisamādiśya putrau sītāṃ tathā snuṣām
indralokaṃ vimānena yayau daśaratho jvalan

SYNONYMS

iti prati samādiśya: having instructed thus | putrau: to his sons | sītām ca: and Seetha | daśarathaḥ nṛpaḥ: the king | rāghavaḥ: who was born in Raghu dynasty | yayau: went | indralokam: to the abode of Indra the lord of celestials | vimānena: by an aerial car. |

TRANSLATION

Having instructed thus to his sons and Seetha, the King Dasaratha who was born in Raghu dynasty went to the abode of Indra, the lord of celestials, by an aerial car.

VERSE 39

इत्यार्षे श्रीमद्रामायणे आदिकाव्ये युद्धकाण्डे एकोनविंशत्यधिकशततमः सर्गः

ityārṣe śrīmadrāmāyaṇe ādikāvye yuddhakāṇḍe ekonaviṃśatyadhikaśatatamaḥ sargaḥ

SYNONYMS

samtuṣṭa tanuh: with a satisfied self | nṛpottama: Dasaratha | mahānubhāvaḥ: of noble- mindedness | śriyā: endowed with splendour | āmantrya: taking leave | putrau: of his sons | sītayā saha: and Seetha | āsthāya: and ascending | vimānam: the aerial car | jagāma: went | devapravarasya lokam: to the abode of Indra |

TRANSLATION

With a satisfied self, Dasaratha the excellent king of noble-mindedness endowed with splendour, taking leave of his sons and Seetha and mounting the aerial car, went to the abode of Indra, the chief of gods.
