Yuddha Kanda - Book Of War

VERSE 1

एतच्छ्रुत्वा शुभं वाक्यं पितामहसमीरितम्
अङ्केनादाय वैदेहीमुत्पपात विभावसुः

etacchrutvā śubhaṃ vākyaṃ pitāmahasamīritam
aṅkenādāya vaidehīmutpapāta vibhāvasuḥ

SYNONYMS

śrutvā: hearing | etat śubham vākyam: these auspicious words | pitāmaha samīritam: spoken by Brahma (creator) | vibhāvasuḥ: the fire-god | utpapāta: came up | ādāya: taking | vaidehīm: Seetha | aṅkena: in his arms. |

TRANSLATION

Hearing the foregoing auspicious words of Brahma (the creator), the fire-god came up, taking Seetha in his arms.

VERSE 2

विधूयाथ चितां तां तु विअदेहीं हव्यवाहनः
उत्तस्थौ मूर्तिमानाशु गृहीत्वा जनकात्मजाम्

vidhūyātha citāṃ tāṃ tu viadehīṃ havyavāhanaḥ
uttasthau mūrtimānāśu gṛhītvā janakātmajām

SYNONYMS

vidhūya tām citām: shaking off that funeral pile | gṛhitvā: and taking | tām sītām: that Seetha | janakātmajam: the daughter of Janaka (in his arms) | havyavāhanaḥ: the fire-god | atha: forthwith | uttasthau: sprang up | āśu: at once | marurtimān: in a personified form. |

TRANSLATION

Shaking off that funeral pile and taking that Seetha, the daughter of Janaka in his arms, the fire-god forthwith sprang up at once in a personified form.

VERSE 3

तरुणादित्यसंकाशां तप्तकाञ्चनभूषणाम्
रक्ताम्बरधरां बालां नीलकुञ्चितमूर्धजाम्

taruṇādityasaṃkāśāṃ taptakāñcanabhūṣaṇām
raktāmbaradharāṃ bālāṃ nīlakuñcitamūrdhajām

SYNONYMS

-4| kṛtvā: bearing | aṅke: in his arms | bālā viadehīm: the youthful Seetha | taruṇāditya samkāśam: who was shining brightly as the rising sun | taptakāṅcana bhūṣaṇām: was decked in ornaments of refined gold | raktāmbaradharām: and attired in a red robe | nīlakuṅcita mūrdhajām: and wore dark curly hari | akliṣṭa mālyābharaṇām: who was further adorned with ornaments of flowers which had not abraded (on her entering the fire and coming out of it) | aninditām: who was absolutely beyond reproach | tathārūpam: and looked just the same (as she did while entering the flames) | vibhāvasuḥ: the fire-god | dadau: restored (her) | rāmāya: to Rama. |

TRANSLATION

Bearing in his arms the youthful Seetha, who was shining brightly as the rising sun, was decked in ornaments of refined gold, attired in a red robe and wore dark curly hair, who was further adorned with ornaments of flowers, which had not abraded (on her entering the fire and coming out of it), who was absolutely beyond reproach and looked just the same (as she did while entering the fire and coming out of it), who was absolutely beyond reproach and looked just the same (as she did while entering the flames), the fire-god restored her to Rama.

VERSE 5

अब्रवीत्तु तदा रामं साक्षी लोकस्य पावकः
एषा ते राम वैदेही पापमस्यां न विद्यते

abravīttu tadā rāmaṃ sākṣī lokasya pāvakaḥ
eṣā te rāma vaidehī pāpamasyāṃ na vidyate

SYNONYMS

tadā: then | pāvakaḥ: the fire-god | lokasya sākṣī: the witness of the world | abravīt tu: spoke | rāmam: to Rama (as follows) | eṣā: here | te vaidehī: is your Seetha | na vidyate pāpam: no sin exists | asyām: in her. |

TRANSLATION

Then, the fire-god, the witness of the whole world, spoke to Rama as follows "Here is your Seetha. No sin exists in her."

VERSE 6

नैव वाचा न मनसा नैव बुद्ध्या न चक्षुषा
सुवृत्ता वृत्तशौण्डीर्यं न त्वामत्यचरच्छुभा

naiva vācā na manasā naiva buddhyā na cakṣuṣā
suvṛttā vṛttaśauṇḍīryaṃ na tvāmatyacaracchubhā

SYNONYMS

śubhā: this auspicious lady | suvṛttā: whose character has been good | na atyacarat: has never been unfaithful | tvām: to you | vṛttaśauṅḍīryam: who are endowed with strength of character | vācā: either by word | na manasā: nor by mind | naiva buddhyā: nor even by intellect | na cakṣuṣā: nor by her glances. |

TRANSLATION

"This auspicious lady, whose character has been good, has never been unfaithful to you who are endowed with strength of character either by word or by mind or even by intellect or by her glances."

VERSE 7

रावणेनापनीतैषा वीर्योत्सिक्तेन रक्षसा
त्वया विरहिता दीना विवशा निर्जनाद्वनात्

rāvaṇenāpanītaiṣā vīryotsiktena rakṣasā
tvayā virahitā dīnā vivaśā nirjanādvanāt

SYNONYMS

virahatā tvayā: separated from you | eṣā dīnā vivaśā: this miserable and helpless lady | apavītā: was taken away | rāvaṇena: by Ravana | rakṣasā: the demon | vīryotsiktena: who was arrogant of his valour | nirjanāt vanāt: from a lonely hermitage. |

TRANSLATION

"Separated from you, this miserable and helpless lady, was taken away by Ravana the demon, who was arrogant of his valour, from a lonely hermitage."

VERSE 8

रुद्ध चान्तःपुरे गुप्ता त्वच्चित्ता त्वत्परायणा
रक्षिता राक्षसीभिश्च घोराभिर्घोरबुद्धिभिः

ruddha cāntaḥpure guptā tvaccittā tvatparāyaṇā
rakṣitā rākṣasībhiśca ghorābhirghorabuddhibhiḥ

SYNONYMS

tvaccittā: (This Seetha) fixing her mind upon you | tvatparāyaṇā: and having you as her final attainment | ruddhā: was detained | antaḥpure: in the gynaecium | guptā: and hidden there | rakṣitā: (she) was guarded | ghorābhiḥ: raakShasiibhiH = by frightful female-demons | ghorabuddhibhiḥ: with horrible intellect. |

TRANSLATION

"This Seetha, who was fixing her mind upon you ad looking on you as her final attainment, was detained in the gynaecium and hidden there. She was guarded by rightful female-demons with horrible intellect."

VERSE 9

प्रलोभ्यमाना विविधं तर्ज्यमाना च मैथिली
नाचिन्तयत तद्रक्षस्त्वद्गतेनान्तरात्मना

pralobhyamānā vividhaṃ tarjyamānā ca maithilī
nācintayata tadrakṣastvadgatenāntarātmanā

SYNONYMS

maithilī: Seetha | tvadgatea antarātmanā: whose mind was directed towards you | nācintayata: ignored | tat: that | rakṣaḥ: demon | pralobhyamānā: even though allured | tarjyamānā: and frightened | vividham: through various means. |

TRANSLATION

"Seetha, whose mind was directed towards you, ignored that demon even though allured and frightened through various means."

VERSE 10

विशुद्धभावां निष्पापां प्रतिगृह्णीष्व मैथिलीम्
न किंचिरभिधातव्या अहमाज्ञापयामि ते

viśuddhabhāvāṃ niṣpāpāṃ pratigṛhṇīṣva maithilīm
na kiṃcirabhidhātavyā ahamājñāpayāmi te

SYNONYMS

pratigṛhṇīṣva: take back | maithilīm: Seetha | niṣpāpam: who is sinless | viśuddha bhāvām: with a pure character | na abhidhātavyā: she should not be told | kimcit: anything (harsh) | aham: I | ājñāpayāmi: (hereby) command | te: you. |

TRANSLATION

"Take back Seetha, who is sinless, with a pure character. She should not be told anything harsh. I hereby command you."

VERSE 11

ततः प्रीतमना रामः श्रुत्वैवं वदतां वरः
दध्यौ मुहूर्तं धर्मात्मा बाष्पव्याकुललोचनः

tataḥ prītamanā rāmaḥ śrutvaivaṃ vadatāṃ varaḥ
dadhyau muhūrtaṃ dharmātmā bāṣpavyākulalocanaḥ

SYNONYMS

tataḥ: then | śrutvā: having heard | evam: thus | rāmaḥ: Rama | varaḥ: the excellent | vadatām: among the eloquent | dharmātmā: whose mind was sent on virtue | prītamanāḥ: with a pleasant mind | bāṣpa vyākula locanaḥ: with his eyes entirely filled with tears of joy | dadhyau: reflected | muhūrtam: for a while. |

TRANSLATION

Rama, the excellent among the eloquent, whose mind was set on virtue, with a pleasant mind to hear the aforesaid speech, reflected for a while, his eyes, entirely filed with tears of joy.

VERSE 12

एवमुक्तो महातेजा धृमानुरुविक्रमः
उवाच त्रिदशश्रेष्ठं रामो धर्मभृतां वरः

evamukto mahātejā dhṛmānuruvikramaḥ
uvāca tridaśaśreṣṭhaṃ rāmo dharmabhṛtāṃ varaḥ

SYNONYMS

evam: thus | uktaḥ: spoken | dhṛtimān: the courageous | rāmaḥ: Rama | uruvikramaḥ: of great prowess | dharma bhṛtām varaḥ: the foremost among those upholding the virtue | uvāca: spoke | tridaśa śreṣṭham: to the fire-god |

TRANSLATION

Hearing those words, the courageous Rama of great prowess and the foremost of those upholding the virtue, replied to the fire-god, the best of gods.

VERSE 13

अवश्यं चापि लोकेषु सीता पावनमर्हति
दीर्घकालोषिता हीयं रावणान्तःपुरे शुभा

avaśyaṃ cāpi lokeṣu sītā pāvanamarhati
dīrghakāloṣitā hīyaṃ rāvaṇāntaḥpure śubhā

SYNONYMS

sītā: Seetha | avaśyam: certainly | arhat: deserves | pāvanam: this purefactory ordeal | lokeṣu: in the eyes of the people | iyam śubhā: (in as much as) this blessed woman | dīrgha kāloṣitā hi: had resided for a long time | rāvaṇāntaḥ pure hi: indeed in the gynaecium of Ravana. |

TRANSLATION

"Seetha certainly deserves this pure factory ordeal in the eyes of the people in as much as this blessed woman had resided for a long time indeed in the gynaecium of Ravana.

VERSE 14

बालिशो बत कामात्म रामो दशरथात्मजः
इति वक्ष्यति मां लोको जानकीमविशोध्य हि

bāliśo bata kāmātma rāmo daśarathātmajaḥ
iti vakṣyati māṃ loko jānakīmaviśodhya hi

SYNONYMS

lokaḥ: the world | vakṣyati: would chatter | mām: against me | iti: saying that | bata: Alas! | rāmaḥ: Rama | daśarātmajaḥ: the son of Dasaratha | bāliśaḥ: was really foolish | kāmaratmā: and that his mind was dominated by lust | aviśodhya jānakīm hi: without indeed examinig Seetha with regard to her chastity. |

TRANSLATION

"The world would chatter against me, saying that Rama, the son of Dasaratha, was really foolish and that his mind was dominated by lust, if I accept Seetha without examining her with regard to her chastity."

VERSE 15

अनन्यहृदयां भक्तां मचत्तपरिवर्तिनीम्
अहमप्यवगच्छामि मैथिलीं जनकात्मजाम्

ananyahṛdayāṃ bhaktāṃ macattaparivartinīm
ahamapyavagacchāmi maithilīṃ janakātmajām

SYNONYMS

ahamapi: I also | avagacchāmi: know | maithilīm: (that) Seetha | janakātmajām: the daughter of Janaka | maccittaparivartinīm: who revolves in my mind | bhaktām ananya hṛdayām: is undivided in her affection to me. |

TRANSLATION

"I also know that Seetha, the daughter of Janaka, who ever revolves in my mind, is undivided in her affection to me."

VERSE 16

इमामपि विशालाक्षीं रक्षितां स्वेन तेजसा
रावणो नातिवर्तेत वेल मिव महोदधिः

imāmapi viśālākṣīṃ rakṣitāṃ svena tejasā
rāvaṇo nātivarteta vela miva mahodadhiḥ

SYNONYMS

rāvaṇaḥ: Ravana | nātivarteta: could not violate | imām viśālākṣīm: this wide-eyed woman | rakṣitām: protected as she was | svena tejasā: by her own splendour | mahodadhiḥ iva: any more than a sea | velām: would transgress (its bounds). |

TRANSLATION

"Ravana could not violate this wide-eyed woman, protected as she was by her own splendour, any more than an ocean would transgress its bounds."

VERSE 17

प्रत्ययार्थं तु लोकानां त्रयाणाम् सत्यसंश्रयः
उपेक्षे चापि वैदेहीं प्रविशन्तीं हुताशनम्

pratyayārthaṃ tu lokānāṃ trayāṇām satyasaṃśrayaḥ
upekṣe cāpi vaidehīṃ praviśantīṃ hutāśanam

SYNONYMS

pratyayārtham: in order to convince | trayāṇām lokānām: the three worlds | satya samśrayaḥ: I | upekṣecāpi: ignored | viadehīm: Seetha | praviśantīm: while she was entering | hutāśanam: the fire. |

TRANSLATION

"In order to convince the three worlds, I, whose refugee is truth, ignored Seetha while she was entering the fire."

VERSE 18

न च शक्तः सुदुष्टत्मा मनसापि हि मैथिलीम्
प्रधर्षयितुमप्राप्यां दीप्तामग्निशिखामिव

na ca śaktaḥ suduṣṭatmā manasāpi hi maithilīm
pradharṣayitumaprāpyāṃ dīptāmagniśikhāmiva

SYNONYMS

suduṣṭātmā: the evil-minded Ravana | na ca śaktaḥ: was not even able | pradharṣayitum: to lay his violent hands | manasāpi: even in thought | aprāpyām maithilīm: on the unobtainable Seetha | dīptām: who was blazing | agniśikhāmiva: like a flaming tongue of fire. |

TRANSLATION

"The evil-minded Ravana was not able to lay his violent hands, even in thought, o the unobtainable Seetha, who was blazing like a flaming tongue of fire."

VERSE 19

नेय मर्हति चैश्वर्यं रावणान्तःपुरे शुभा
अनन्या हि मया सीता भास्करेण प्रभा यथा

neya marhati caiśvaryaṃ rāvaṇāntaḥpure śubhā
ananyā hi mayā sītā bhāskareṇa prabhā yathā

SYNONYMS

iyam śubhā: this auspicious woman | nārhati: could not (give way) aishvaryam = to the sovereignty | rāvaṇāntaḥ pure: existing in the gynaecium of Ravana | sītā: in as much as Seetha | ananyāhi: is not different | mayā: from me | prabhā yathā: even as sunlight | bhāskareṇa: (is not different) from the sun. |

TRANSLATION

"This auspicious woman could not give way to the sovereignty, existing in the gynaecium of Ravana, in as much as Seetha is not different from me, even as sunlight is not different from the sun."

VERSE 20

विशुद्धा त्रिषु लोकेषु मैथिली जनकात्मजा
न विहातुं मया शक्या कीर्तिरात्मवता यथा

viśuddhā triṣu lokeṣu maithilī janakātmajā
na vihātuṃ mayā śakyā kīrtirātmavatā yathā

SYNONYMS

maithilī: Seetha | janakātmajā: the daughter of Jankaa | viśuddhā: is completely pure in her character | triṣu lokeṣu: in all the three worlds | na śakyā: and can no longer be | vihātum: renounced | mayā: by me | kīrtiḥ yathā: as a good name (cannot be cast aside) | ātmavatā: by a prudent man. |

TRANSLATION

"Seetha, the daughter of Janaka, is completely pure in her character, in all the three worlds and can no longer be renounced by me, as a good name cannot be cast aside by a prudent man."

VERSE 21

अवश्यं च मया कार्यं सर्वेषां वो वचो हितम्
स्निग्धानां लोकनाथानामेवं च वदतां हितम्

avaśyaṃ ca mayā kāryaṃ sarveṣāṃ vo vaco hitam
snigdhānāṃ lokanāthānāmevaṃ ca vadatāṃ hitam

SYNONYMS

hitam: the salutary | vacaḥ: worlds | vaḥ sarveṣām: of all of you | lokanāthām: the guardians of the world | snighdhānām: who are affectionate | evam: thus | vadatām: speaking | avaśyam: certainly | kāryam: are to be carried out | mayā: by me. |

TRANSLATION

The salutary advice of you all, the affectionate guardians of the world, who are saying what is conducive to our good, must be certainly carried out by me."

VERSE 22

इत्यार्षे श्रीमद्रामायणे आदिकाव्ये युद्धकाण्डे अष्टादशाधिक शततमः सर्गः

ityārṣe śrīmadrāmāyaṇe ādikāvye yuddhakāṇḍe aṣṭādaśādhika śatatamaḥ sargaḥ

SYNONYMS

uktvā: saying | ityevam: thus | sametya: and getting reunited | priyayā: with her beloved (Seetha) | vijayī: the victorious | mahāyaśāḥ: and highly illustrious | rāmaḥ: Rama | rāghavaḥ: a scion of Raghu dynasty | mahābalaḥ: who was endowed with a great strength | sukhārhaḥ: and deserved happiness | praśasyamānaḥ: and was being glorified | karmaṇā: by his feats | svakṛtena: performed by own self | anubabhūva: experienced | sukham: joy. |

TRANSLATION

Saying thus and getting reunited with her beloved Seetha, the victorious and highly illustrious Rama, a scion of Raghu dynasty, who was endowed with a great strength and deserved happiness and was being glorified by his exploits, performed by his own self, experienced joy.
