VERSE 1

ते रावणवधं दृष्ट्वा देवगन्धर्वदानवाः
जग्मुः स्वैः स्वै र्विमानैस्ते कथयन्तः शुभाः कथाः

te rāvaṇavadhaṃ dṛṣṭvā devagandharvadānavāḥ
jagmuḥ svaiḥ svai rvimānaiste kathayantaḥ śubhāḥ kathāḥ

SYNONYMS

dṛṣṭvā: Having seen | rāvaṇa vadham: the destruction of Ravana | te: those | devagandharvadānavāḥ: gods | jagmuḥ: went away | svaiḥ svaiḥ vimānaiḥ: in their respective aerial cars | te kathayantaḥ: narrating as they were | śubhāḥ kathāḥ: about the auspicious narratives. |

TRANSLATION

Having seen the destruction of Ravana, those gods, celestial musicians and demons, while chatting about the auspicious narrative, went away in their respective aerial cars.

VERSE 2

रावणस्य वधं घोरं राघवस्य पराक्रमम्
सुयुद्धं वानराणां च सुग्रीवस्य च मन्त्रितम्

rāvaṇasya vadhaṃ ghoraṃ rāghavasya parākramam
suyuddhaṃ vānarāṇāṃ ca sugrīvasya ca mantritam

SYNONYMS

TRANSLATION

Chatting themselves about the awful destruction of Ravana, the terrific prowess of Rama, the admirable combat of the monkeys, the counsel tendered by Sugreeva, the affection and valour of Lakshmana; the son of Sumitra; the loyaltyof Seetha to her husband and about the strength of Hanuma, the illustrious celestials and others rejoicingly returned as they had come.

VERSE 4

राघवस्तु रथं दिव्यमिन्द्रदत्तं शिखिप्रभम्

rāghavastu rathaṃ divyamindradattaṃ śikhiprabham

SYNONYMS

anujñāya: taking leave | divyam ratham: of the celestial chariot | indradattam: which had been given by Indra the lord of celestials | śikhiprabham: and which = shone like fire | mahābāhuḥ: the mighty armed | rāghavastu: Rama | pratya pūjayat: respectfully saluted | mātalim: Matali. |

TRANSLATION

Taking leave of the celestial chariot, which had been given by Indra the lord of celestials and which shone like fire, the mighty armed Rama respectfully saluted Matali.

VERSE 5

राघवेणाभ्यनुज्ञातो मातलिः शक्रसारथिः

rāghaveṇābhyanujñāto mātaliḥ śakrasārathiḥ

SYNONYMS

abhyanujñātaḥ: as assented | rāghaveṇa: by Rama | mātaliḥ: Matali | śakrasārathiḥ: Indra's charioteer | āsthāya: mounting | divyam tam ratham: that celestial chariot | utpapāta: ascended | diṇameva: to the heaven itself. |

TRANSLATION

As assented by Rama, Matali Indra's charioteer, mounting that celestial chariot, ascended to the heaven itself.

VERSE 6

तस्मिंस्तु दिवमारुढे सरथे रथिनां वरः

tasmiṃstu divamāruḍhe sarathe rathināṃ varaḥ

SYNONYMS

tasmin: when that matali | ārūḍhe: ascended | divam: to heaven | sarathe: along with his chariot | rāghavaḥ: Rama | varaḥ: the foremost one | rathinām: among the chariot-warriors | paramaprītaḥ: was extremely pleased | pariṣasvaje: and embraced | sugrīvam: Sugreeva. |

TRANSLATION

When Matali ascended to heaven along with his chariot, Rama, the foremost one among the chariot-warriors was highly rejoiced and embraced Sugreeva.

VERSE 7

पर्ष्वज्य च सुग्रीवं लक्ष्मणेनाभिवादितः

parṣvajya ca sugrīvaṃ lakṣmaṇenābhivāditaḥ

SYNONYMS

pariṣvajya ca: having embraced | sugrīvam: Sugreeva | abhivāditaḥ: and having been greeted | lakṣmaṇena: by Lakshmana | pūjyamānaḥ: and having been honoured | harigaṇaiḥ: by the monkey-troops | ājagāma: (Rama) came | balālayam: to the camp where the army had been stationed. |

TRANSLATION

Having embraced Sugreeva greeted by Lakshmana and having been honoured by the monkey-troops. Rama came to the camp where the army had been stationed.

VERSE 8

अथोवाच स काकुत्स्थः समीपपरिवर्तिनम्

athovāca sa kākutsthaḥ samīpaparivartinam

SYNONYMS

atha: then | saḥ kākutthsaḥ: Rama | uvāca: spoke | (as follovs) lakṣmaṇam: to Lakshmana | saumitrim: the son of Sumitra | sattva sampannam: endowed as he was with strength | śubhalakṣaṇam: and having auspicious marks | samīpa parivartanam: who stayed nearby. |

TRANSLATION

Then, Rama spoke (as follows) to Lakshmana, son of Sumitra, who was endowed with strength and having auspicious marks, who stayed nearby.

VERSE 9

विभीषणमिमं सौम्य लङ्कायामभिषेचय

vibhīṣaṇamimaṃ saumya laṅkāyāmabhiṣecaya

SYNONYMS

saumya: O the benevolent Lakshmana! | abhiṣecaya: consecrate | laṅkāyām: on the throne of Lanka | imam vibhīṣaṇam: this Vibhishana | anuraktam: to whom everyone is attached | bhaktam ca: a loyal person | tathā: and | pūrvopakāriṇam: the one who has formerly done a service to us. |

TRANSLATION

"O the benevolent Lakshmana! Consecrate on the throne of Lanka, this Vibhishana to whom everyone is attached, a loyal person as he is and the one who has formerly done a service to us."

VERSE 10

एष मे परमः कामो यदिमं रावणानुजम्

eṣa me paramaḥ kāmo yadimaṃ rāvaṇānujam

SYNONYMS

saumya: O gentle one! eShaH = this | me: is my | paramaḥ: paramount | kāmaḥ: desire | yat: that | paśyeyam: I should see | imam vibhīṣaṇam: this Vibhishana | rāvaṇānujam: the brother of Ravana | abhiṣiktam: being consecrated for throne | laṅkāyām: in Lanka. |

TRANSLATION

"O gentle one! This s my paramount desire that I should see this Vibhishana, the brother of Ravana being consecrated for throne in Lanka."

VERSE 11

एवमुक्तस्तु सौमित्री राघवेण महात्मना

evamuktastu saumitrī rāghaveṇa mahātmanā

SYNONYMS

evam: thus | uktaḥ: spoken | mahātmanā: by the great souled | rāghaveṇa: Rama | saumitriḥ: Lakshmana | uktvā tatheti: saying | susamhṛṣṭaḥ: and rejoicingly | ādade: procured | sauvarṇam: a golden | ghaṭam: pot. |

TRANSLATION

Hearing the words of the great soled Rama, Lakshmana replied, 'so it be' and rejoicingly procured a golden pot.

VERSE 12

तं घटं वानरेन्द्राणाम् हस्ते दत्त्वा मनोजवान्

taṃ ghaṭaṃ vānarendrāṇām haste dattvā manojavān

SYNONYMS

mahāsattvaḥ: that mighty Lakshmana | tadā: then | dattvā: placing | tam: that | ghaṭam: pot | haste: in the hands | vānerendrāṇām: of the monkey-chiefs | vyādideśa: instructed | manojavān: them | samudra salilam: (to bring) sea-water. |

TRANSLATION

That mighty Lakshmana, then placing that pot in the hands of the monkey-chiefs, instructed them, who were as swift as thought, to bring sea-water.

VERSE 13

अतिशीघ्रम् ततो गत्वा वानरास्ते मनोजवाः

atiśīghram tato gatvā vānarāste manojavāḥ

SYNONYMS

tataḥ: thereupon | te vānarottamāḥ: those excellent monkeys | manojavāḥ: with the swiftness of thought | gattvā: moving | atiśīghram: very quickly | āgatāḥ: returned | gṛhya: having obtained | jalam: the water | samudrāt: from the sea. |

TRANSLATION

Thereupon, those excellent monkeys, with the swiftness of thought, moving very quickly from that place, returned, having obtained the water from the sea.

VERSE 14

ततस्त्वेकं घटं गृह्य संस्थाप्य परमासने

tatastvekaṃ ghaṭaṃ gṛhya saṃsthāpya paramāsane

SYNONYMS

-15| tataḥ: thereafter | saumitriḥ: Lakshmana | suhṛdgaṇa samāvṛtaḥ: together with his friends | gṛhya: taking | ekam: one | ghaṭam: pot | vibhīśaṇam samsthāpya: making Vibhishana to sit | paramāsane: on the throne | abhyaṣiṅcat: sprinkled (him) | tena ghaṭena: (with sea-water) from that pot | vidhinā: in accordance with the rule (in Vedic scriptures) | rakṣasām madhye: in the middle of the demons | rājānām: to make him the king | laṅkāyām: for the kingdom of Lanka | rāma śāsanāt: as directed by Rama. |

TRANSLATION

Thereupon, Lakshmana together with his friends, taking one pot and making Vibhishana to sit on the throne, sprinkled him with sea-water from that pot in accordance with the rule prescribed in Vedic scriptures, while the demons were witnessing the ceremony, to make him the king for Lanka, as directed by Rama.

VERSE 16

अभ्यषिञ्चंस्तदा सर्वे राक्षसा वानरास्तथा

abhyaṣiñcaṃstadā sarve rākṣasā vānarāstathā

SYNONYMS

tadā: then | sarve rākṣasāḥ: all the demons | tathā: as well as | vānarāḥ: the monkeys | abhyaṣiṅcan: consecrated | gatvā: having obtained | atulam praharṣam: extra ordinary delight | tuṣṭuvuḥ: (they) eulogized | rāmeva hi: Rama indeed. |

TRANSLATION

Then, all the demons as well as the monkeys consecrated Vibhishana. Having gained extra ordinary delight, they indeed eulogized Rama.

VERSE 17

तस्यामात्या जहृषिरे भक्ता ये चास्य राक्षसाः

tasyāmātyā jahṛṣire bhaktā ye cāsya rākṣasāḥ

SYNONYMS

dṛṣṭvā: seeing | vibhīṣaṇam: Vibhishana | rākṣasendram: the lord of demons | abhṣiktam: consecrated | laṅkāyām: for the throne of Lanka | tasya: his | amātyāḥ: (four) counsellors | ye rākṣasāḥ: and those demons | asya bhaktāḥ: who were devoted to him | jahṛṣire: were rejoiced. |

TRANSLATION

Seeing Vibhishana the lord of demons consecrated for the throne of Lanka, his four counsellors who were always together with him and such of those demons who were devoted to him, were rejoiced.

VERSE 18

राघवः प्रमां प्रीतिं जगाम सहलक्ष्मणः

rāghavaḥ pramāṃ prītiṃ jagāma sahalakṣmaṇaḥ

SYNONYMS

rāghavaḥ: Rama | saha lakṣmaṇaḥ: together with Lakshmana | jagāma: obtained | paramām: great | prītim: delight | saḥ: that | vibhīṣaṇaḥ: Vibhishana | prāpya: having gained | tat mahat rājyam: that great kingdom | rāma dattam: bestowed on him by Rama |

TRANSLATION

Rama together with Lakshmana were greatly delighted. That Vibhishana, having gained that great kingdom bestowed on him by Rama, was also greatly delighted.

VERSE 19

प्रकृतीः सान्त्ययित्वा च ततो राममुपागमत्

prakṛtīḥ sāntyayitvā ca tato rāmamupāgamat

SYNONYMS

-20| sāntvayitvā: after consoling | prakṛtīḥ: his people | tataḥ: then | upāgamat: approached | rāmam: Rama | niśācarāḥ: the demons | paurāḥ: who were residing in the city | samtuṣṭāḥ: were quite delighted | ājahruḥ: and brought | tasmaiḥ: to him | (by vay of presents) dadhi: curds | akṣatān: unbroken grains of rice | modakāmśca: sweets shaped like balls | lājāḥ: parched grains of unhusked rice | tathā: and | sumanasaḥ: flower also. |

TRANSLATION

After consoling his people, Vibhishana then sought to presence of Rama. Now, the demons who were residing in the city were quite delighted and brought to him (by way of presents) curds, unbroken grains of rice, sweets shaped like balls, parched grains of unhusked rice and flowers too.

VERSE 21

स तान् गृहीत्वा दुर्धर्षो राघवाय न्यवेदयत्

sa tān gṛhītvā durdharṣo rāghavāya nyavedayat

SYNONYMS

gṛhītvā: accepting | tān: them | vīryavān: the valiant | saḥ: Vibhishana | nyavedayat: offered | sarvam: all | māṅgalyam: those auspicious objects | rāghavāya: to Rama | lakṣmaṇāya: and to Lakshmana | mangalam: happily. |

TRANSLATION

Accepting them, the valiant and unconquerable Vibhishana happily offered all those auspicious objects to Rama and Lakshmana.

VERSE 22

कृतकार्यं समृद्धार्थं दृष्ट्वा रामो विभीषणम्

kṛtakāryaṃ samṛddhārthaṃ dṛṣṭvā rāmo vibhīṣaṇam

SYNONYMS

dṛṣṭvā: seeing | vibhīṣaṇam: Vibhishana | kṛta kāryam: who had accomplished his act | rāmaḥ: Rama | pratijagrāha: accepted | tat: it | sarvam: all | tasya priya kāmyayā eva: with a sole desire to show gracefulness to him. |

TRANSLATION

Seeing Vibhishana, who had accomplished his act and increased his resources, Rama accepted it all, with a sole desire to show gratefulness to him.

VERSE 23

ततह् शैलोपमं वीरं प्राञ्जलिं प्रणतं स्थितम्

tatah śailopamaṃ vīraṃ prāñjaliṃ praṇataṃ sthitam

SYNONYMS

tāḥ: thereupon | rāmaḥ: Rama | uvāca: spoke | idam vacaḥ: the following words | vīra hanūmantam: to the valiant | plavaṅgamam: the monkey | śailopamam: who was equal in size to a mountain | sthitam: and who was standing | praṇatam: humbly | prāṅjalim: with his palms joined together for salutation. |

TRANSLATION

Thereupon, Rama spoke the following words to the valiant Hanuma the monkey who was equal in size to a mountain and who was standing in humility, with his hands joined in salutation.

VERSE 24

अनुज्ज़्नाप्य महाराजमिमं सौम्य विभीषणम्

anujznāpya mahārājamimaṃ saumya vibhīṣaṇam

SYNONYMS

saumya: O the benevolent one! | anujñāpya: taking permission from | imam vibhīṣaṇam: this Vibhishana | māhārājam: the great king | praveśya: and entering into | laṅkām nagarim: the City of Lanka | brūhi: inform | kauśalam: about our welfare | maithilīm: to Seetha. |

TRANSLATION

"O the benevolent one! Taking permission from this Vibhishana, the great king and entering into the City of Lanka, inform about our welfare to Seetha."

VERSE 25

वैदेह्यै मां कुशलिनं सुग्रीवं च सलक्ष्मणम्

vaidehyai māṃ kuśalinaṃ sugrīvaṃ ca salakṣmaṇam

SYNONYMS

śreṣṭha vadatām: O Hanuma | ācakṣva: tell | vaidehyai: Seetha | mām: myself | sa lakṣmaṇam: along with Lakshmana | sugrīvam ca: and Sugreeva | kuśalinam: are well | rāvaṇam: and that Ravana | hatam: had been killed | raṇe: in battle. |

TRANSLATION

"O Hanuma, the proficient one in speech! Inform Seetha that myself together with Lakshmana and Sugreeva are well and that Ravana had been killed in battle."

VERSE 26

इत्यार्षे श्रीमद्रामायणे आदिकाव्ये युद्धकाण्डे द्वादशाधिकशततमः सर्गः

ityārṣe śrīmadrāmāyaṇe ādikāvye yuddhakāṇḍe dvādaśādhikaśatatamaḥ sargaḥ

SYNONYMS

harīśvara: O the master of monkeys! | udāhṛtya: making clear | etat: this | priyam: favourite news | vaidehyāḥ: to Seetha | arhasi: you ought | upāvartitum: to return | pratigṛhya: taking back | samdeśam: her message. |

TRANSLATION

"O Hanuma the master of monkeys! Making clear this favourite news to Seetha, you ought to return, taking back her message."
