Yuddha Kanda - Book Of War

VERSE 1

ततस्तमक्षोभ्यबलम् लङ्कायां नृपतेश्चराः
सुवेले राघवं शैले निविष्टं प्रत्यवेदयन्

tatastamakṣobhyabalam laṅkāyāṃ nṛpateścarāḥ
suvele rāghavaṃ śaile niviṣṭaṃ pratyavedayan

SYNONYMS

tataḥ: then | nṛpateḥ: the king's | carāḥ: spies | pratyavedan: informed (Ravana) | tam rāghavam: that Rama | akṣobhya balam: with his imperturbable army | niviṣṭam: was stationed | suvele śaile: at Mount Suvela | laṅkāyām: in Lanka. |

TRANSLATION

The spies of king Ravana informed him that Rama with his imperturbable army was encamped at Mount Suvela in Lanka.

VERSE 2

चाराणाम् रावणः श्रुत्वा प्राप्तम् रामम् महाबलम्
जातोद्वेगो।अभवत्किंचित्सचिवानिदमब्रवीत्

cārāṇām rāvaṇaḥ śrutvā prāptam rāmam mahābalam
jātodvego|abhavatkiṃcitsacivānidamabravīt

SYNONYMS

śrutvā: Hearing | cārāṇām: throught | rāmam: that Rama | mahābalam: with his mighty army | prāptam: had arrived | rāvaṇaḥ: Ravana | jātodvegaḥ: was agitated | kimcit: a little | abravīt: and spoke | idam: thse words | sacivān: to his counsellors (as follows): |

TRANSLATION

Hearing through his spies that Rama with his mighty army had arrived to Lanka, Ravana was a little agitated and spoke to his counsellors as follows:

VERSE 3

मन्त्रिणः शीघ्रमायान्तु सर्वे वै सु समाहिताः
अयम् नो मन्त्रकालो हि सम्प्रास्त इति राक्षसाः

mantriṇaḥ śīghramāyāntu sarve vai su samāhitāḥ
ayam no mantrakālo hi samprāsta iti rākṣasāḥ

SYNONYMS

ayam: this | mantrakālaḥ: time for delibration | samprāptaḥ iti: has come | naḥ: to us | sarve: all | mantriṇaḥ: the ministerial | rākṣasāḥ: demons | śīghram: quickly | āgāntu: come | susamāhitāḥ: with keenly attentive minds. |

TRANSLATION

"The time for deliberation has come to us. Let our ministerial colleagues come quickly with their keenly attentive minds."

VERSE 4

तस्य तच्चासनम् श्रुत्वा मन्त्रिणो।अभ्यागमन् द्रुतम्
ततः स मन्त्रयामास राक्षसैः सचिवैः सह

tasya taccāsanam śrutvā mantriṇo|abhyāgaman drutam
tataḥ sa mantrayāmāsa rākṣasaiḥ sacivaiḥ saha

SYNONYMS

śrutvā: hearing | tat: that | śāsanam: command | tasya: of his | mantriṇaḥ: the ministers | abhyāgamam: came | drutam: soon | tataḥ: thereafter | saḥ: he | mantrayāmāsa: deliberated | sacivaiḥ saha: with his ministers | rākṣasaiḥ: the ogres. |

TRANSLATION

As per his command, the ministers came instantly. Ravana conferred with the ogres, his ministers.

VERSE 5

मन्त्रयित्वा तु दुर्धर्षः क्षमं यत्तदन्न्तरम्
विसर्जयित्वा सचिवान् प्रविवेश स्वमालयम्

mantrayitvā tu durdharṣaḥ kṣamaṃ yattadanntaram
visarjayitvā sacivān praviveśa svamālayam

SYNONYMS

durdharṣaḥ: Ravana | mantrayitvā: deliberated | tat: that | yat: which | kṣamam: was befitting to be done | anantaram: immediately after | visarjayitvā: sent away sachivaan = the ministers | praviveśa: and entered | ālayam: palace. |

TRANSLATION

The dreadful Ravana discussed about the ensuing things to be done immediately. He sent away the ministers and entered his palace.

VERSE 6

ततो राक्षसमादाय विद्युज्जिह्वम् महाबलम्
मायाविदम् महामायः प्रविशद्यत्र मैथिली

tato rākṣasamādāya vidyujjihvam mahābalam
māyāvidam mahāmāyaḥ praviśadyatra maithilī

SYNONYMS

tataḥ: thereafter | mahāmayaḥ: Ravana | ādāya: took | vidyujjihvam: Vidyujjihva | mahābalam: exceedingly strong | māyāvidam: who knew magic spells (along with him) | prāviśat: entered | yatra: the place where | maithilī: Seetha ( was there). |

TRANSLATION

Thereafter, Ravana the practiser of conjuring tricks, took the exceedingly strong Vidyujjihva who was a great sourcerer along with him and went to Seetha's place.

VERSE 7

विद्युज्जिह्वम् च मायाज्ञ्मब्रवीद्राक्षसाधिपः
मोहयिष्यावहे सीताम् मायया जनकात्मजाम्

vidyujjihvam ca māyājñmabravīdrākṣasādhipaḥ
mohayiṣyāvahe sītām māyayā janakātmajām

SYNONYMS

rākśāsādhipaḥ: Ravana the lord of demons | abravīt ca: spoke | vidyujjihvam: to Vidyujjihva | māgājṅgam: who knew deceptions (as follows): mohayishhvaavahe maayayaa = we shall create an illusion to deceive | sītām: Seetha | janakātmajām: the daughter of Janaka. |

TRANSLATION

Ravana the lord of demons spoke to Vidyujjihva, who was a knower of conjuring tricks as follows: "With your spells, create an illusion in order to deceive Seetha, daughter of Janaka."

VERSE 8

शिरो मायामयम् गृह्य राघवस्य विशाचर
मां त्वं समुपतिष्ठस्व महच्च सशरम् धनुः

śiro māyāmayam gṛhya rāghavasya viśācara
māṃ tvaṃ samupatiṣṭhasva mahacca saśaram dhanuḥ

SYNONYMS

niśācara: O | tvam: you | samupatisthasva: approached | mām: me | gṛhya: holding | mayāmayam: a deceptive | rāghavasya: Rama's | śirā: head sa sharam = along with his arrows | mahat: and the big | dhanuḥ ca: bow. |

TRANSLATION

"O, demon! Produce a head resembling Rama's along with a great bow and arrows created deceptively and present yourself before me."

VERSE 9

एवमुक्त स्तथेत्याह विद्युज्जिह्वो निशाचतः
दर्शयामास ताम् मायाम् सुप्रयुक्ताम् स रावणे

evamukta stathetyāha vidyujjihvo niśācataḥ
darśayāmāsa tām māyām suprayuktām sa rāvaṇe

SYNONYMS

evam: thus | uktaḥ: spoken | niśācaraḥ: the demon | vidyujjihvaḥ: Vidyujjihva | āha: said | tatheti: "be itso" | saḥ: he | darśayāmāsa: showed | rāvaṇe: to Ravana | tām māyām: that conjuring trick | suprayuktām: well-performed | rājā: the king | abravat: became well-performed | abhāt: became | tuṣṭaḥ: satisfied | tasya: of him | pradadeca: and gave too | vibhūṣaṇam: an ornament. |

TRANSLATION

Hearing Ravana's words, the demon Vidyujjihva said, "Be it so". He showed to Ravana those things of his conjuring trick, well-performed. The king became satisfied of his work and gave him an ornament (as a gift).

VERSE 10

अशोकवनिकायाम् च सीतादर्शनलालसः

aśokavanikāyām ca sītādarśanalālasaḥ

SYNONYMS

mahābalaḥ: the exceedingly strong | nairṛtānām adhipatiḥ: Ravana the suzerain lord of demons | samviveśa: duly entered | aśoka vanikāyām: the Ashoka grove | sītādarśana lālasaḥ: eagerly longng for the sight of Seetha. |

TRANSLATION

The exceedingly strong Ravana the suzerain lord of demons, duly entered the Ashoka grove, eagerly longing for the sight of Seetha.

VERSE 11

ततो दीनामदैन्यार्हाम् ददर्श धनदामजः

tato dīnāmadainyārhām dadarśa dhanadāmajaḥ

SYNONYMS

12| tataḥ: then | dhanadānujaḥ: Ravana | dadarśa: saw (Seetha) | dīnām: the unfortunate one | adainyārham: who did not desrve that fate | adhomukhīm: her head bowed | śokaparām: plunged in grief upaviSTaam = seated | mahītale: on the ground | gatām: abtained | aśoka vanikām: in the Ashoka grove | dhyāntīm: absorbed in the thought | bhartārameva: of her husband. |

TRANSLATION

Then, Ravana the younger brother of Kubera ( the god of riches) saw Seetha the unfortunate one, who did not deserve that fate, seated on the ground with her head bent down in the Ashoka grove plunged in grief as she was and absorbed in the thought of her husband.

VERSE 13

उपास्यमानाम् घोराभी राक्षसीभिरदूरतः
उपसृत्य ततः सीताम् प्रहर्षं नाम कीर्तयन्

upāsyamānām ghorābhī rākṣasībhiradūrataḥ
upasṛtya tataḥ sītām praharṣaṃ nāma kīrtayan

SYNONYMS

tataḥ: then | upasṛtya: approaching | sītām: Seetha | upāsyamānām: who was attended upon | ghorābhiḥ rākṣasībhiḥ: by ghastly ogresses | adūrataḥ: not for distant from her | kīrtayan praharṣam nāma: and mentioning his own name with great delight | uvāca: spoke | idam vacanam: these words | dhṛṣṭam: whih were audacious | janakātmajam: to Seetha. |

TRANSLATION

Then, approaching Seetha who was attended upon by ghastly ogresses seated not far distance from her and mentioning his own name with great delight, Ravana spoke the following audacious words to Seetha.

VERSE 14

सान्त्व्यमाना मया भद्रे यमाश्रित्य विमन्यसे

sāntvyamānā mayā bhadre yamāśritya vimanyase

SYNONYMS

bhadre: O | saḥ: He | yam: in whom | āśritya: you took shelter | vimanasyase: and repelled me | ssantvānā: when you were consoled | mayā: by me | kharahantā: that murderer of Khara | te bhartā: your husband | rāghavaḥ: Rama | hataḥ: has been killed | samara: in battle. |

TRANSLATION

"O, Beautiful one! He in whom you trusted and repelled me when I sought to console you - that murderer of Khara, your husband Rama has been killed in battle."

VERSE 15

चिन्नम् ते सर्वथा मूलम् दर्पश्च विहतो मया

cinnam te sarvathā mūlam darpaśca vihato mayā

SYNONYMS

sīte: O Seetha! | te mūlam: your root | chinnam: has been cut off | sarvathā: in all ways | mayā: be me | darpaṣa: bhavishhyasi = you will become | mama: my | bhāryā: wife | ātmānaḥ: by your | vyasanana: evil predicament. |

TRANSLATION

"O, Seetha! Your root has been cut off in all ways by me and your pride has been slain. By your present evil predicament, you will become my wife."

VERSE 16

विसृजैतां मतिं मूढे किं मृतेन करिष्यसि

visṛjaitāṃ matiṃ mūḍhe kiṃ mṛtena kariṣyasi

SYNONYMS

mūḍhe: O | visṛja: give up etaam = this | matim: resolution | kim kariṣyasi: what will you do | mṛtena: with one dead? | bhadre: O | Bhave: become | īśvarī: the Chief Queen | sarvāsām: over all | mama: my | bharyāṇām: consorts. |

TRANSLATION

"O, Foolish one! Give up this resolution. What will you do with one dead. O, beautiful one! Become the Chief Queen over all my consorts."

VERSE 17

अल्पपुण्ये निवृत्तार्थे मूढे पण्डितमानिनि

alpapuṇye nivṛttārthe mūḍhe paṇḍitamānini

SYNONYMS

munḍhe: O | alpapuṇye: with scant virtue | nivṛttārthe: and lost purpose! | panṅḍita mānini: you think yourself as wise! Siite = O | śṛṇu: hear | ghoram bhartṛvadham: about the dreadful killing of your husband | vṛtra vadham yathā: as the killing of the demon vR^itra(at the hands of Indra). |

TRANSLATION

"O, Foolish one, with scant virtue and failed purpose! You think yourself as wise! O, Seetha! Hear about the dreadful killing of your husband in battle, as the killing of the demon Vritra (at the hands of Indra)"

VERSE 18

समायातः समुद्रान्तं हन्तुं मां किल राघवः

samāyātaḥ samudrāntaṃ hantuṃ māṃ kila rāghavaḥ

SYNONYMS

rāghavaḥ: Rama | vṛtaḥ: encircled | mahatā balena: by an extensive army | vānarendra praṇītena: led forwards by sugreeva | samāyātaḥ kila: at the sea- shore | hantum: to kill | mām: me. |

TRANSLATION

"Rama, encircled by an extensive army led forward by Sugreeva, is said to have arrived at the sea-shore, to kill me."

VERSE 19

सम्निविष्टः समुद्रस्य पीड्य तीरमथोत्तरम्

samniviṣṭaḥ samudrasya pīḍya tīramathottaram

SYNONYMS

atha: thereafter | divākare: the sun | vrajati: was going | astam: to set | rāmaḥ: Rama | saviṣṭaḥ: encamped | pīḍya: encroaching upon | uttaram: the northern | tīram: shore | samudrasya: of sea | mahatā balena: with his mighty army. |

TRANSLATION

"While sun was going to set, Rama with his mighty army was encamped there, encroaching upon the northern shore of the sea."

VERSE 20

अथाध्वनि परिश्रान्तमर्धरात्रे स्थितम् बलम्

athādhvani pariśrāntamardharātre sthitam balam

SYNONYMS

atha: then | balam: their army | sthitam: stationed there | sukhasuptam: omfortably asleep | ardharātre: at the middle of the night | pariśrāntam: and completely fatigued | adhvani: in the course of the journey | samāsādya: was approached | prathamam: first | caritam: and spied | caraiḥ: by our spies. |

TRANSLATION

"Their army stationed there, comfortably asleep at the middle of the night and completely fatigued in the course of the journey, was approached first and espied by our spies."

VERSE 21

तत्प्रहस्तप्रणीतेन बलेन महता मम

tatprahastapraṇītena balena mahatā mama

SYNONYMS

mama balena: by my army | mahatā: which is great | prahasta praṇītena: which was led by Prahasta | asya: Rama's | balam: army | hatam: was killed | rātrau: in the night | yatra: at the place where | rāmaḥ: Rama | salakṣmaṇaḥ: along with Lakshmana (were there). |

TRANSLATION

"By my great army, which was led by Prahasta, Rama's army was killed in the night at the place where Rama and Lakshmana were there."

VERSE 22

पट्टिशान् परिघांश्चक्रानृष्टीर्दण्डान्महायुधान्

paṭṭiśān parighāṃścakrānṛṣṭīrdaṇḍānmahāyudhān

SYNONYMS

23| paṭṭiśān: harpoons | parighān: maes | cakrān: disus | ṛṣṭīḥ: daggers | daṅḍān: sticks | mahāyudhān: massed weapons | bāṇajālāni: multitude of arrows | śūlāni: spears bhaasvaraan = shining | kūṭamudgarān: spiked maces | yaṣṭīṣa: picks | tomarān: lanes | prāsān: darts | cakrāṇi: made iruular missiles | musalāni ca: lubs | udyamya udyamya: were made use of again and again | rakṣobhiḥ: by the demons | nipātitāḥ: and struk down | vānareṣu: on the monkeys. |

TRANSLATION

The demons wielding harpoons, maces, discus, daggers, sticks, great arrows spears, shining maces with spikes, picks lances, darts, massed weapons, clubs and circular missiles, made use of them again and again in order to strike down the monkeys."

VERSE 24

अथ सुप्तस्य रामस्य प्रहस्तेन प्रमाथिना

atha suptasya rāmasya prahastena pramāthinā

SYNONYMS

atha: thereafter | prahastena: by Prahasta | pramādhinā: the impetuous | kṛtahastena: and the steady-handed demon | suptasya: the sleeping | rāmasya: Rama's | śiraḥ: head | hhinnam: was severed | mahāsinā: by his mighty sword | asaktam: without any resistance. |

TRANSLATION

"The impetuous Prahasta, with his steady hand, severed the head of Rama sleeping there, with his mighty sword without a resistance from any one."

VERSE 25

विभीषणः समुत्पत्य निगृहीतो यदृच्छया

vibhīṣaṇaḥ samutpatya nigṛhīto yadṛcchayā

SYNONYMS

yard^icchayā: fortunately | vibhīṣaṇaḥ: Vibhishana | samut[atua: was overleaped | nigṛhītaḥ: and hel aptive | lakṣmaṇaḥ: Lakshmana | plavangaiḥ saha: along with monkeys | pravrājitaḥ: were made to run away | diśam: in all diretions. |

TRANSLATION

"Fortunately, Vibhishana was over leaped and held captive. Lakshmana along with the monkeys were made to run away in all directions."

VERSE 26

सुग्रीवो ग्रीवया सीते भग्नया प्लवगाधिपः

sugrīvo grīvayā sīte bhagnayā plavagādhipaḥ

SYNONYMS

sīte: O | sugrīvaḥ: Sugreeva | plavagādhipaḥ: the king of monkeys | bhagnayā: with the broken | grīvayā: neck | hanuman: and Hanuman | nirastahanukaḥ: with his jaw removed | śete: were laid down | hataḥ: and killed | rākṣasaiḥ: by the demons. |

TRANSLATION

"O, Seetha! Sugreeva the king of monkeys with his neck broken and Hanuman with his jaw removed were laid down and killed by the demons."

VERSE 27

जाम्बवानथ जानुभ्यामुत्पतन्निहतो युधि

jāmbavānatha jānubhyāmutpatannihato yudhi

SYNONYMS

atha: thereafter | jāmbavān: Jambavan | utpatan: who was rising up | jānubhyām: on his knees | nihataḥ: was killed | yudhi: in the combat | chinnaḥ: (He was) cut off | paṭṭiśaiḥ: sharp-edged spears | pādapoyatha: like a tree. |

TRANSLATION

"Thereafter Jambavan who was rising up on his knees was killed in the battle. His body was cut off with many sharp-edged spears, like a tree is cut off."

VERSE 28

मैन्दश्च द्विविदश्चोभौ तौ वानरवरर्षभौ

maindaśca dvividaścobhau tau vānaravararṣabhau

SYNONYMS

29| maindaśca: Mainda | dvividaśca: and Dvivida | ubhau: ariniSuudanau = those two great scourgers of their foes | vyāyatau: the long bodied | vānararṣabhau: and the foremost of monkeys | rudantau: groaning | niḥśvasantau: and breathless | parīvṛtau: their limbs bathed | rudhireṇa: in blood | chinrau: wee cut to pieces | madhye: at the waist-level | asinā: by a sword. |

TRANSLATION

"Mainda and Dvivida - those two great scourgers of their foes, the long bodied and the foremost of the monkeys, groaning and breathless, their limbs bathed in blood-were cut to pieces at the waist-level, by a sword."

VERSE 30

अनुष्वनति मेदिन्याम् पनसः यथा

anuṣvanati medinyām panasaḥ yathā

SYNONYMS

31| panasaḥ: Panasa | anuṣvanati: crying for help (was stretched) | medinyām: on the earth | panasoyathā: under a tree by the same name | chinnaḥ: Piered | bahubhiḥ: by a number of naraachaiH = steel arrows | darīmukhaḥ: Darimukha | śete: is lying | daryāmi: in a pit | mahā tejāḥ: the exceedingly valiant | kumudastu: Kumuda on his part | niṣkūjan: shrieking | hataḥ: was killed | sāyakaiḥ: by missiles. |

TRANSLATION

"Panasa, crying for help was stretched on the earth under a tree of the same name. Pierced by lying in a pit. The exceedingly valiant kumuda on his part, shrieking, was killed by a hail of missiles."

VERSE 32

अङ्गदो बहुभिश्छ्न्नः शरैरासाद्य राक्षसैः
परितो रुधिरोद्गारी क्षितौ निपतिताङ्गदः

aṅgado bahubhiśchnnaḥ śarairāsādya rākṣasaiḥ
parito rudhirodgārī kṣitau nipatitāṅgadaḥ

SYNONYMS

aṅgada: Angada | nipatāṅgadaḥ: who was adorned with bracelets | kṣitau: on the ground | rudhirodgārī: emitting blood | saritaḥ: on all sides | chinnaḥ: (as he was) pierced | rākṣasaiḥ: by the demons bahubhiH = with many | śaraiḥ: arrows | āsādya: after approaching him. |

TRANSLATION

"Angada, who was adorned with bracelets lies fallen down, emitting blood on all sides, as he was pierced by the demons with many arrows, after approaching him."

VERSE 33

हरयो मथिता वागैरथ जालैस्तथापरे
शयाना मृदितास्तत्र वायुवेगैरिवाम्बुदाः

harayo mathitā vāgairatha jālaistathāpare
śayānā mṛditāstatra vāyuvegairivāmbudāḥ

SYNONYMS

apare: other | harayaḥ: monkeys | śayanāḥ: sleeping | tatra: there | mathitā: were crushed | nāgai: by elephants | tathā: and | rathajālaiḥ: multitude of chariots | ambudāḥ iva: like clouds | m^iditā: are crushed | vāyuvegaiḥ: by the velocity of wind. |

TRANSLATION

"The monkeys sleeping there were crushed by elephants and multitude of chariots, like clouds are crushed to pieces by the velocity of wind."

VERSE 34

प्रसृताश्च परे त्रस्ताः हन्यमाना जघन्यतः
अनुद्रुतास्तु रक्षोभिः सिम्हैरिव महाद्विपाः

prasṛtāśca pare trastāḥ hanyamānā jaghanyataḥ
anudrutāstu rakṣobhiḥ simhairiva mahādvipāḥ

SYNONYMS

pare: the enemy | prasṛtāḥ: fled | trastāḥ: in terror | rakṣobhiḥ: by demons | hanyamānāḥ: while being struck | jaghanyataḥ: on the back | simhaiḥ iva: like lions | mahādvipāḥ: pursuing great elephants. |

TRANSLATION

"The enemy fled in terror, pursued by demons, while being struck on the bak, like lions pursuing great elephants."

VERSE 35

सागरे पतिताः केचित्केचिद्गगनमाश्रिताः
ऋक्षा वृक्षामपारूढा वानरैर्व्यतिमिश्रिताः

sāgare patitāḥ kecitkecidgaganamāśritāḥ
ṛkṣā vṛkṣāmapārūḍhā vānarairvyatimiśritāḥ

SYNONYMS

kecit: some | patitāḥ: fell | sāgare: in the ocean | āśritāḥ: sought shelter | gaganam: in the sky | ṛkṣāḥ: the bears | vyatiniśritāḥ: combined | vānaraiḥ: with monkeys | upārūḍhāḥ: climbed | viṛkṣān: the trees. |

TRANSLATION

"Some monkeys fell in the sea and some sought shelter in the sky. The bears with the monkeys climbed the trees."

VERSE 36

सागरस्य च तीरेषु शैलेषु च वनेषु च
पिङ्गलास्ते विरूपाक्षे राक्षसैर्बहवो हताः

sāgarasya ca tīreṣu śaileṣu ca vaneṣu ca
piṅgalāste virūpākṣe rākṣasairbahavo hatāḥ

SYNONYMS

rākṣasaiḥ: by the demons | virūpākṣaiḥ: with monstrous eyes | hatāḥ: were killed | te: those | bahavaḥ: multitude | piṅgalāḥ: of monkeys | tīreṣu: at the shores | sāgarasya: of the sea | śaileṣuha: in the mountains vaneshhuha = and in the woods. |

TRANSLATION

"By the demons with monstrous eyes, were killed a multitude of monkeys, at the shores of the sea, in the mountains an in the woods."

VERSE 37

एवम् तव हतो भर्ता ससैन्यो मम सेवया
क्षतजार्द्रं रजोध्वस्तमिदं चाप्याहृतम् शिरः

evam tava hato bhartā sasainyo mama sevayā
kṣatajārdraṃ rajodhvastamidaṃ cāpyāhṛtam śiraḥ

SYNONYMS

evam: thus | tava: your | bharatā: husband | sa sainyaḥ: together with his army | hataḥ: was killed | mama senagāḥ: by my army | idam: this | śiraḥ: head | asya kṣata jārdram: dvenced in his blood | rajodhvastam: and covered with dust | āhṛtam: is procured. |

TRANSLATION

"Thus, your husband together with his army was killed by my troops. This head, drenched in his blood and besmeared with dust has been gathered up."

VERSE 38

ततः परमदुर्धर्षो रावणो राक्षसेश्वरः
सीतायामुपशृण्वत्यां राक्षसीमिद मब्रवीत्

tataḥ paramadurdharṣo rāvaṇo rākṣaseśvaraḥ
sītāyāmupaśṛṇvatyāṃ rākṣasīmida mabravīt

SYNONYMS

TRANSLATION

Thereafter, Ravana the Lord of demons who was very much difficult to be attacked, spoke the following words to an ogress, while Seetha was overhearing them.

VERSE 39

राक्षसम् क्रूरकर्माणम् विद्युज्जिह्वम् समानय
येन तद्रघनशिरः सङ्ग्रमात्स्वयमाहृतम्

rākṣasam krūrakarmāṇam vidyujjihvam samānaya
yena tadraghanaśiraḥ saṅgramātsvayamāhṛtam

SYNONYMS

TRANSLATION

"Bring Vidyujjihva, the demon of the cruel deed, by whom himself Raghava's head was brought back from the battle-field."

VERSE 40

विद्युज्जिह्व स्तदा गृह्य शिरस्तत्सशरासनम्
प्रणामम् शिरसा कृत्वा रावणस्याग्रतः स्थितः

vidyujjihva stadā gṛhya śirastatsaśarāsanam
praṇāmam śirasā kṛtvā rāvaṇasyāgrataḥ sthitaḥ

SYNONYMS

tadā: then | tat śiraḥ: that head | sa śarāsanam: along with a bow | vidyujjihvaḥ: Vidyujjihva | kṛtva: making a respectful salute | śirasā: with his head bent low | sthitaḥ: stood | agrataḥ: in front | rāvaṇasya: of Ravana. |

TRANSLATION

Holding that head along with a bow, Vidyujjihva making a respectful salute with his head bent low, stood in front of Ravana.

VERSE 41

तमब्रवीत्ततो राजा रावणो राक्षसम् स्थितम्
विद्युज्जिह्वम् महाजिह्वम् समीपपरिवर्तिनम्

tamabravīttato rājā rāvaṇo rākṣasam sthitam
vidyujjihvam mahājihvam samīpaparivartinam

SYNONYMS

TRANSLATION

Thereafter, the king Ravana spoke the following words to Vidyujjihva, the demon who had a large tongue and who was standing and moving closely.

VERSE 42

अग्रतः कुरु सीतायाः श्रीघ्रं दाशरथेः शिरः
अवस्थां पशिचमां भर्तुः कृपणा साधु पश्यतु

agrataḥ kuru sītāyāḥ śrīghraṃ dāśaratheḥ śiraḥ
avasthāṃ paśicamāṃ bhartuḥ kṛpaṇā sādhu paśyatu

SYNONYMS

kuru: keep | dāśaratheḥ: Rama's | śiraḥ: head | śīghram: immediately | agrataḥ: in front | sītāyāḥ: of Seetha | kṛpaṇā: (let) the miserable Seetha | paśyatu: see | sādhu: well | paścimām: the find | avasthām: condition | bhartaḥ: of her husband. |

TRANSLATION

"Keep Rama's head immediately in front of Seetha. Let the miserable Seetha see well the final condition of her husband.

VERSE 43

एवमुक्तं तु तद्रक्षः शिरस्तत्प्रियदर्शनम्
उपनिक्षिप्य सीतायाः क्षिप्रमन्तरधीयत

evamuktaṃ tu tadrakṣaḥ śirastatpriyadarśanam
upanikṣipya sītāyāḥ kṣipramantaradhīyata

SYNONYMS

tat rakṣaḥ: that demon | evam: thus | uktam: spoken | upamikṣipya: desposited in the vicinity | sītāyāḥ: of Seetha | tat: that | śiraḥ: head | priyadarśanam: whih was pleasant to look at | kṣipram: and soon | antaradhīyata: disappeared from the site. |

TRANSLATION

Hearing Ravana's words, that demon deposited the cherished head in the vicinity of Seetha and soon disappeared from the site.

VERSE 44

रावणश्चापि चिक्षेप भास्वरम् कार्मुकम् महत्
त्रिषु लोकेषु विख्यातम् रामस्यैतदिति ब्रुवन्

rāvaṇaścāpi cikṣepa bhāsvaram kārmukam mahat
triṣu lokeṣu vikhyātam rāmasyaitaditi bruvan

SYNONYMS

TRANSLATION

"Here is Rama's bow famous in the three worlds!" - saying thus, Ravana threw a great shining bow in front of Seetha.

VERSE 45

इदम् तत्तव रामस्य कार्मुकं ज्यासमाव्र्६इतम्
इह प्रहस्तेवानीतम् तम् हत्वा निशि मानुषम्

idam tattava rāmasya kārmukaṃ jyāsamāvr6itam
iha prahastevānītam tam hatvā niśi mānuṣam

SYNONYMS

idam: this is | tat: that | kārmukam: bow | jyā samāvṛtam: with its cord stretched | tava rāmasya: belonging to Rama | ānītam: that was brought back | prahastena: by Prahasta | iha: here | hatvā: after killing | tam: that | mānuṣam: man | niśi: in the night. |

TRANSLATION

"This is the bow with its cord stretched, belonging to Rama, that was brought back by Prahasta here, after killing that hero in the night."

VERSE 46

इत्यार्षे श्रीमद्रामायणे आदिकाव्ये युद्धकाण्डे एकत्रिंशः सर्गः

ityārṣe śrīmadrāmāyaṇe ādikāvye yuddhakāṇḍe ekatriṃśaḥ sargaḥ

SYNONYMS

TRANSLATION

That Rama's head and bow on the ground in front of Seetha the illustrious daughter of Janaka, saying: "You now become submissive to my desire."
