Yuddha Kanda - Book Of War

VERSE 1

शिरस्यञ्जलिमादाय कैकेयीनन्दिवर्धनः
बभाषे भरतो ज्येष्ठन् रामं सत्यपराक्रमम्

śirasyañjalimādāya kaikeyīnandivardhanaḥ
babhāṣe bharato jyeṣṭhan rāmaṃ satyaparākramam

SYNONYMS

bharataḥ: Bharata | kaikeyyānandavardhanaḥ: the enhancer of Kaikeyi's happiness | babhāṣe: spoke | rāmam: to Rama | jyeṣṭham: his eldest brother | satyaparākramam: the truly brave man | ādhyāya: placing | aṅjalim: his open hands placed side by side together and slightly hallowed | śirasi: on his head (as a token of salutation). |

TRANSLATION

Placing his hallowed hands together on his head (as a mark of salutation), Bharata the enhancer of Kaikeyi's happiness, spoke to the truly brave Rama, his elder brother (as follows):

VERSE 2

पूजिता मामिका माता दत्तन् राज्यमिदं मम
तद्ददामि पुनस्तुभ्यन् यथा त्वमददा मम

pūjitā māmikā mātā dattan rājyamidaṃ mama
taddadāmi punastubhyan yathā tvamadadā mama

SYNONYMS

māmikā: my | mātālator: mother | pūjitā: was treated respectfully | idam rājyam: this kingdom | dattam: was given | mama: to me (in the same manner) | yathā: as | tvam: you | adadāḥ: gave | tat: it | dadāmi: I am giving (it) | tubhyam: for you | punaḥ: again. |

TRANSLATION

"You gave this kingdom to me and treated my mother's words respectfully. As you gave it to me then, in the same way I am giving it to you again.

VERSE 3

धुरमेकाकिना न्यस्तामृषभेण बलीयसा
किशोरवद्गुरुं भारं न वोढुमहमुत्सहे

dhuramekākinā nyastāmṛṣabheṇa balīyasā
kiśoravadguruṃ bhāraṃ na voḍhumahamutsahe

SYNONYMS

aham: I | na utsahe: cannot | voḍhum: burden | kiśoravat: (anymore then) a yong ox | dhuram: a load | nyastām: carried forward | balīyasā: by a strong | vṛṣabheṇa: bull | ekākinā: all alone. |

TRANSLATION

I cannot carry this heavy burden anymore than a young ox would sustain a load, carried forward by a strong bull all alone."

VERSE 4

वारिवेगेन महता भिन्नः सेतुरिव क्षरन्
दुर्बन्धनमिदं मन्ये राज्यच्छिद्रमसन्वृतम्

vārivegena mahatā bhinnaḥ seturiva kṣaran
durbandhanamidaṃ manye rājyacchidramasanvṛtam

SYNONYMS

manye: I think | idam: this | rājyacchidram: weak point in administration of the kingdom | asamvṛtam: which is uncovered | durbandhanam: is difficult to be controlled | bhinnaḥ: seturiva = as a broken dam | kṣaran: seeping from its cracks | mahatā: vaasivegena = (when breached) by a mammoth stream of water. |

TRANSLATION

"I think this venerable point in the form of administration of the kingdom is difficult to be controlled, as a broken dam, seeping from its cracks when breached mammoth stream of water.

VERSE 5

गतिं खर इवाश्वस्य हन्सस्येव च वायसः
नान्वेतुमुत्सहे देव तव मार्गमरिन्दम

gatiṃ khara ivāśvasya hansasyeva ca vāyasaḥ
nānvetumutsahe deva tava mārgamarindama

SYNONYMS

arimdamavīra: O hero | na utsahe: I am not able | anvetum: to follow | tavamārgam: your path | iva: any more than | kharaḥ: a donkey | gatim: (would follow) the gallop | aśvasya: of a horse | vāyasaḥ: and a cow | hamsasyeva: (would take up) |

TRANSLATION

O hero, the annihilator of enemies! I am not able to follow your path, any more than a donkey would follow the gallop of a horse or a crow would take up the chase of a wild goose."

VERSE 6

यथा च रोपितो वृक्षो जातश्चान्तर्निवेशने
महांश्च सुदुरारोहो महास्कन्धः प्रशाखवान्

yathā ca ropito vṛkṣo jātaścāntarniveśane
mahāṃśca sudurāroho mahāskandhaḥ praśākhavān

-8| mahābāho: O mighty armed | manujendra: king! | yathā: how | vṛkṣaḥ: a tree | āropitaḥ: planted | antarniveśane: in the black-yard of one's own house | jātaḥ api: even though grown | durārohaḥ: and difficult to climb | mahāskandhaḥ: with a huge trunk | praśākhavān: and large branches | na pradarśayan: does not yield | phalāni: fruits | śīryeta: and dries up | puṣpitaḥ bhūtvā: after flowering | saḥ: he (who planted it) | nānubhavet: would not enjoy | tasya artham: its object | yasya hetoḥ: the fruit for which | ropitaḥ: it was planted | eṣā: this | upamā: is the analogy (applied to you) | tvam yadi: if you | bhartā: as a master | na śādhihi naḥ: would not indeed rule over us | bhṛtyān: your servents | tvam: you | vettumarhasi: can understand | artham: the meaning. |

TRANSLATION

"O mighty armed king! How a tree planted in the back yard of one's own house, even though grown big and difficult to climb with a huge trunk and large branches, does not yield fruits but dries up after flowering, he who planted it would not enjoy the fruit for which it was planted. This is the analogy applied to you, if you, as a Master, would not indeed rule over us, your servants. You can understand the meaning."

VERSE 9

जगदद्याभिषिक्तन् त्वामनुपश्यतु सर्वतः
प्रतपन्तमिवादित्यं मध्याह्ने दीप्ततेजसं

jagadadyābhiṣiktan tvāmanupaśyatu sarvataḥ
pratapantamivādityaṃ madhyāhne dīptatejasaṃ

SYNONYMS

rāghava: O Rama! | adya: today | jagat: (let) the world | anupaśyati: see | tvām: you | abhiṣiktam: crowned | ādityamiva: like the sun | dīpta tejasam: with flowing splendor | pratapantam: shining brilliantly | madhyāhne: at noon. |

TRANSLATION

"O Rama! Today, let the world see you when crowned, like the sun with its glowing splendour, shining brilliantly at noon.

VERSE 10

तूर्यसङ्घातनिर्घोषैः काञ्चीनूपुरनिस्वनैः
मधुरैर्गीतशब्दैश्च प्रतिबुध्यस्व शेष्व च

tūryasaṅghātanirghoṣaiḥ kāñcīnūpuranisvanaiḥ
madhurairgītaśabdaiśca pratibudhyasva śeṣva ca

SYNONYMS

śeṣva ca: may you relax | pratibudhyasva: and wake-up too | tūrya samghāta nirghoṣaiḥ: to the sounds of an ensemble of musical instruments | kāṇcīnūpura niḥ svanaiḥ: noise of ornaments strung with tiny bells and worn around the waist and anklets | madhuraiḥ: and sweet | gīta śabdaiśca: invocation of songs. |

TRANSLATION

May you relax and wake-up too, to the sounds of an ensemble of musical instruments, the tinkling of ornaments strung with tiny bells and worn around the waist and anklets as well as sweet invocation of songs.

VERSE 11

यावदावर्तते चक्रन् यावती च वसुन्धरा
तावत्त्वमिह सर्वस्य स्वामित्वमभिवर्तय

yāvadāvartate cakran yāvatī ca vasundharā
tāvattvamiha sarvasya svāmitvamabhivartaya

SYNONYMS

tvam: you | anuvartaya: look after | svāmitvam: the lordship | lokasya: of the world | iha: here | yāvat: and so far as | cakram: the stellar sphere | āvartate: revolves | vasumdharā: the earth | tāvat: is so much. |

TRANSLATION

Look after, you, lordship of world here, as long as the stellar sphere revolves and so far as the earth is spread out."

VERSE 12

भरतस्य वचः श्रुत्वा रामः परपुरञ्जयः
तथेति प्रतिजग्राह निषसादासने शुभे

bharatasya vacaḥ śrutvā rāmaḥ parapurañjayaḥ
tatheti pratijagrāha niṣasādāsane śubhe

SYNONYMS

śrutvā: hearing | vacaḥ: the words | bharatasya: of Bharata | ramaḥ: Rama | para puramjayaḥ: who conquered the cities of adversaries | pratijagrāha: accepted | tathīti: saying | niṣasāda: and sat | śubhe: on the auspicious | āsane: seat. |

TRANSLATION

Hearing the words of Bharata, Rama who conquered the cities of adversaries, accepted his words saying "Be it so" and sat on an auspicious seat.

VERSE 13

ततः शत्रुघ्नवचनान्निपुणाः श्मश्रुवर्धकाः
सुखहस्ताः सुशीघ्राश्च राघवं पर्युपासत

tataḥ śatrughnavacanānnipuṇāḥ śmaśruvardhakāḥ
sukhahastāḥ suśīghrāśca rāghavaṃ paryupāsata

SYNONYMS

tataḥ: thereafter | śatrughna vacanāt: on instructions from Shatrughna | nipuṇāḥ: skilled | śmaśruvadhanāḥ: barbers | sukha hastāḥ: with gentle hands | suśīghrāśca: who can do with a good speed | parya vārayan: encircled | rāghavam: Rama. (all round). |

TRANSLATION

Thereafter, on instructions from Shatrughna, skilled barbers with gentle hands who can do their work with a good speed, encircled Rama all round.

VERSE 14

पूर्वन् तु भरते स्नाते लक्ष्मणे च महाबले
सुग्रीवे वानरेन्द्रे च राक्षसेन्द्रे विभीषणे

pūrvan tu bharate snāte lakṣmaṇe ca mahābale
sugrīve vānarendre ca rākṣasendre vibhīṣaṇe

TRANSLATION

Bharata, having bathed first, the mighty Lakshmana, Sugreeva the lord of monkeys and Vibhishana the king of demons took bath. Rama had his matted locks disentangled and bathed. He stood there, shining with splendour, adorned with picturesque garlands, smeared with sandal pastes of various colours and clothed in costly raiment.

VERSE 16

प्रतिकर्म च रामस्य कारयामास वीर्यवान्
लक्ष्मणस्य च लक्ष्मीवानिक्ष्वाकुकुलवर्धनः

pratikarma ca rāmasya kārayāmāsa vīryavān
lakṣmaṇasya ca lakṣmīvānikṣvākukulavardhanaḥ

SYNONYMS

vīryavān: the valiant | lakṣmīvān: and charming man | ikṣvākukula vardhanaḥ: the promoter of Ikshvaku dynasty | kārayāmāsa: caused to do | pratikarma: personal adornment | rāmasya: of Rama | lakṣmaṇasya: and of Lakshmana. |

TRANSLATION

Shatrughna, the valiant and charming man, the promoter of Ikshvaku dynasty made arrangements for personal adornment of Rama and Lakshmana.

VERSE 17

प्रतिकर्म च सीतायाः सर्वा दशरथस्त्रियः
आत्मनैव तदा चक्रुर्मनस्विन्यो मनोहरम्

pratikarma ca sītāyāḥ sarvā daśarathastriyaḥ
ātmanaiva tadā cakrurmanasvinyo manoharam

SYNONYMS

tadā: then | sarvāḥ: all | manasvinyaḥ: the noble-minded | daśarathastriyaḥ: wives of Dasaratha | ātmanaiva: indeed themselves | cakruḥ: made | manoharam: a beautiful | pratikarma: decoration | svitāyāh: of seetha. |

TRANSLATION

Then, all the noble-minded widows of Dasaratha indeed themselves personally adorned Seetha beautifully.

VERSE 18

ततो राघवपत्नीनान् सर्वासामेव शोभनम्
चकार यत्नात्कौसल्या प्रहृष्टा पुत्रवत्सला

tato rāghavapatnīnān sarvāsāmeva śobhanam
cakāra yatnātkausalyā prahṛṣṭā putravatsalā

SYNONYMS

tataḥ: thereupon | prahṛṣṭā: the delightful | kausalyā: Kausalya | putravatsalā: who was affectionate of her sons | cakāra: made | śobhanam: a charming decoration | sarvāsām: to all | vānarapatnīnām: the wives of monkeys | yatnāt: with zeal. |

TRANSLATION

Thereupon, the delightful Kausalya, who was affectionate of her sons, adorned with zeal all the wives of monkeys.

VERSE 19

ततः शत्रुघ्नवचनात्सुमन्त्रो नाम सारथिः
योजयित्वाभिचक्राम रथन् सर्वाङ्गशोभनम्

tataḥ śatrughnavacanātsumantro nāma sārathiḥ
yojayitvābhicakrāma rathan sarvāṅgaśobhanam

SYNONYMS

tataḥ: later | sārathiḥ: the charioteer | sumantro nāma: by name | śatrughnavacanāt: on the orders of Shatrughna | abhicakrāma: approached | yojayitvā: yoking | ratham: chariot (to horses) | sarvāṇga śobhanam: completely beautiful in all respects. |

TRANSLATION

Later, on the orders of Shatrughna, the charioteer by name Sumantra made his appearance, yoking chariot to horses which were completely beautiful in all respects.

VERSE 20

अर्कमण्डलसङ्काशन् दिव्यं दृष्ट्वा रथन् स्थितम्
आरुरोह महाबाहू रामः सत्यपराक्रमः

arkamaṇḍalasaṅkāśan divyaṃ dṛṣṭvā rathan sthitam
āruroha mahābāhū rāmaḥ satyaparākramaḥ

SYNONYMS

dṛṣṭvā: seeing | divyam: the charming | ratham: chariot | arkamaṇḍalasamkāśam: which emitted immaculate splendor like that of the sun | sthitam: standing | mahābāhuḥ: the mighty armed | rāmaḥ: rama | parapuramjayaḥ: the conqueror of hostile cities | āruroha: ascended it. |

TRANSLATION

Seeing the charming chariot, which emitted immaculate splendour like that of the sun, standing before him, the mighty armed Rama, the conqueror of hostile cities, ascended it.

VERSE 21

सुग्रीवो हनुमांश्चैव महेन्द्रसदृशद्युती
स्नातौ दिव्यनिभैर्वस्त्रैर्जग्मतुः शुभकुण्डलौ

sugrīvo hanumāṃścaiva mahendrasadṛśadyutī
snātau divyanibhairvastrairjagmatuḥ śubhakuṇḍalau

SYNONYMS

sugrīvaḥ: Sugreeva | hanumāmścaiva: and Hanuma | mahendra sadṛśadyutī: having a splendor similar to that of Indra the lord of celestials | snātau: after taking bath | jagmatuḥ: started | divyanibhaiḥvastraiḥ: wearing beautiful raiments | śubhakuṅḍalaiḥ: and sparkling ear-rings. |

TRANSLATION

Sugreeva and Hanuma, having splendour similar to that of Indra the lord of celestials, after taking their bat, wore beautiful raiment as well as sparkling ear rings and started.

VERSE 22

सर्वाभरणजुष्टाश्च ययुस्ताः शुभकुण्डलाः
सुग्रीवपत्न्याः सीता च द्रष्टुं नगरमुत्सुकाः

sarvābharaṇajuṣṭāśca yayustāḥ śubhakuṇḍalāḥ
sugrīvapatnyāḥ sītā ca draṣṭuṃ nagaramutsukāḥ

SYNONYMS

sarvābharaṇa juṣṭāḥ: endowed with all types of ornaments | śubhakuṇḍalāḥ: and charming ear-rings | tāḥ: those | sugrīva: and Seetha | yayuḥ: moved out | usukāḥ: longing | draṣṭum: to see | nagaram: the city. |

TRANSLATION

Endowed with all types of ornaments as well as charming ear-rings, those wives of Sugreeva together with Seetha moved out, longing as they were, to see the city.

VERSE 23

अयोध्यायान् तु सचिवा राज्ञो दशरथस्य च
पुरोहितं पुरस्कृत्य मन्त्रयामासुरर्थवत्

ayodhyāyān tu sacivā rājño daśarathasya ca
purohitaṃ puraskṛtya mantrayāmāsurarthavat

SYNONYMS

ayodhyāyām tu: | sacivāḥ: the ministers | rāñaḥ daśarathasya: of King Dasaratha | puraskṛt purohitam: having placed the priest in their front | mantrayāmāsa: planned (everything) | arthavat: meaningfully. |

TRANSLATION

In Ayodhya, the ministers of king Dasaratha, having placed the priest in their front, planned everything meaningfully.

VERSE 24

अशोको विजयश्चैव सिद्धार्थश्च समाहिताः
मन्त्रयन्रामवृद्ध्यर्थन् वृत्त्यर्थं नगरस्य च

aśoko vijayaścaiva siddhārthaśca samāhitāḥ
mantrayanrāmavṛddhyarthan vṛttyarthaṃ nagarasya ca

SYNONYMS

aśokaḥ: Ashoka | vijayaścaiva: Vijaya | siddhārdhaśca: and Siddhartha | samāhitāḥ: with a great attention | mantrayan: discussed | rāmavṛddhyartham: about Rama's well-being | nagarsya ṛdhyartham: and the prosperity to do. |

TRANSLATION

Ashoka, Vijaya and Siddhartha, with a great concern, discussed about Rama's advancement and the prosperity of the City.

VERSE 25

सर्वमेवाभिषेकार्थन् जयार्हस्य महात्मनः
कर्तुमर्हथ रामस्य यद्यन्मङ्गलपूर्वकम्

sarvamevābhiṣekārthan jayārhasya mahātmanaḥ
kartumarhatha rāmasya yadyanmaṅgalapūrvakam

SYNONYMS

arhatha: you ought | kartum: to do | maṅgala pūrvakam: auspiciously | yadyat sarvam: all that is required | abhiṣekārtham: for the coronation | mahātmanaḥ rāmasya: of the great souled Rama | jayārhasya: worthy of victory. |

TRANSLATION

"You ought to do auspiciously whatever is required for the coronation of the great-souled Rama, worthy of victory."

VERSE 26

इति ते मन्त्रिणः सर्वे सन्दिश्य तु पुरोहितम्
नगरान्निर्ययुस्तूर्णन् रामदर्शनबुद्धयः

iti te mantriṇaḥ sarve sandiśya tu purohitam
nagarānniryayustūrṇan rāmadarśanabuddhayaḥ

SYNONYMS

samdiśya: advising | purohitam: the priest | iti: in this way | sarve: all | te: those | mantriṇaḥ: ministers | tūrṇam: quickly | niryayuḥ: started | nagarāt: from the city | rāmadarśana bddhayaḥ: with an intention to see Rama. |

TRANSLATION

Advising the priest in this way, all those ministers quickly started from the city, with an intention to see Rama.

VERSE 27

हरियुक्तन् सहस्राक्षो रथमिन्द्र इवानघः
प्रययौ रथमास्थाय रामो नगरमुत्तमम्

hariyuktan sahasrākṣo rathamindra ivānaghaḥ
prayayau rathamāsthāya rāmo nagaramuttamam

SYNONYMS

anaghaḥ: the faultless | rāmaḥ: Rama | āsthāya: mounting | uttamam: the excellent | rathm: chariot | sahasrākṣaḥ: indraH iva = as the thousand-eyed Indra | ratham: (ascended) the chariot | hariyuktam: yoked to green-coloured horses | prayayau: and sallied forth | nagaram: to the city. |

TRANSLATION

The faultless Rama, mounting the excellent chariot, as Indra ascended the chariot yoked to green-coloured horses, sallied forth to the city.

VERSE 28

जग्राह भरतो रश्मीञ्शत्रुघ्नश्छत्रमाददे
लक्ष्मणो व्यजनन् तस्य मूर्ध्नि सम्पर्यवीजयत्

jagrāha bharato raśmīñśatrughnaśchatramādade
lakṣmaṇo vyajanan tasya mūrdhni samparyavījayat

SYNONYMS

TRANSLATION

Bharata took up the reins. Shatrughna held the parasol on Rama's head. Lakshmana winnowed a fan. Vibhishana, the king of demons standing nearby, held a white fan, shining brilliantly like the moon.

VERSE 30

ऋषिसङ्घैर्तदाकाशे देवैश्च समरुद्गणैः
स्तूयमानस्य रामस्य शुश्रुवे मधुरध्वनिः

ṛṣisaṅghairtadākāśe devaiśca samarudgaṇaiḥ
stūyamānasya rāmasya śuśruve madhuradhvaniḥ

SYNONYMS

tadā: then | ṛṣisamghaiḥ: by the groups of sages | devaiśca: celestials | samarudyaṇaiḥ: along with troop of the Maruts | rāmasya: Rama | stūyamānasya: was being praised | ākāśe: in the sky | madhuradhvaniḥ: and sweet reverberation | śuśruve: was heard. |

TRANSLATION

Then, in the sky, groups of sages, celestials along with troop of the Maruts, the host of the gods, praised Rama and sweet reverberation was heard.

VERSE 31

ततः शत्रुञ्जयं नाम कुञ्जरं पर्वतोपमम्
आरुरोह महातेजाः सुग्रीवो वानरेश्वरः

tataḥ śatruñjayaṃ nāma kuñjaraṃ parvatopamam
āruroha mahātejāḥ sugrīvo vānareśvaraḥ

SYNONYMS

tataḥ: thereupon | sugrīvaḥ: Sugreeva | plavagarṣabhaḥ: the foremost of monkeys | mahātejāḥ: possessing a great splendor | āruroha: mounted | kuṅjaram: an elephant | śatrumjayanāma: name Shatrunjaya | parvatopamam: looking like a mountain. |

TRANSLATION

Thereupon, Sugreeva, the foremost of monkeys, possessing a great splendor, mounted an elephant named Shatrunjaya, looking like a mountain.

VERSE 32

नवनागसहस्राणि ययुरास्थाय वानराः
मानुषन् विग्रहन् कृत्वा सर्वाभरणभूषिताः

navanāgasahasrāṇi yayurāsthāya vānarāḥ
mānuṣan vigrahan kṛtvā sarvābharaṇabhūṣitāḥ

SYNONYMS

vānarāḥ: Mokneys | mānuṣaṃ vigraham kṛtvā: assuming human forms | sarvābharaṇabhūṣitāḥ: and adorned with all types of ornaments | yayuḥ: sallied forth | āsthāya: mounting | navanāgasahasrāni: on nine thousand elephants. |

TRANSLATION

Assuming human forms and adorned with all types of ornaments, monkeys sallied forth, mounting on mine thousand elephants.

VERSE 33

शङ्खशब्दप्रणादैश्च दुन्दुभीनान् च निस्वनैः
प्रययू पुरुषव्याघ्रस्तां पुरीन् हर्म्यमालिनीम्

śaṅkhaśabdapraṇādaiśca dundubhīnān ca nisvanaiḥ
prayayū puruṣavyāghrastāṃ purīn harmyamālinīm

SYNONYMS

puruṣavyāghraḥ: Rama | the foremost śaṇkhaśabda praṇādaiśca: with sounds of couches among men buzzing in the ear | niḥ svanaiḥ ca: and sounds | dundubhīnām: of kettle drums | prayayau: proceeded | tām purīm: to that City of Ayodhya | harmya mālinīm: having a series of palaces. |

TRANSLATION

Rama, the foremost among men, accompanied by sounds of conches buzzing in the ears and sounds of kettle-drums, proceeded to the city of Ayodhya, having a series of palaces.

VERSE 34

ददृशुस्ते समायान्तन् राघवं सपुरःसरम्
विराजमानन् वपुषा रथेनातिरथन् तदा

dadṛśuste samāyāntan rāghavaṃ sapuraḥsaram
virājamānan vapuṣā rathenātirathan tadā

अनुजग्मुर्महात्मानं भ्रातृभिः परिवारितम्

te vardhayitvā kākutsthan rāmeṇa pratinanditāḥ
anujagmurmahātmānaṃ bhrātṛbhiḥ parivāritam

VERSE 36

अमात्यैर्ब्राह्मणैश्चैव तथा प्रकृतिभिर्वृतः
श्रिया विरुरुचे रामो नक्षत्रैरिव चन्द्रमाः

amātyairbrāhmaṇaiścaiva tathā prakṛtibhirvṛtaḥ
śriyā viruruce rāmo nakṣatrairiva candramāḥ

प्रव्याहरद्भिर्मुदितैर्मङ्गलानि ययौ वृतः

sa purogāmibhistūryaistālasvastikapāṇibhiḥ
pravyāharadbhirmuditairmaṅgalāni yayau vṛtaḥ

TRANSLATION

That Rama drove, surrounded by musicians having musical instruments cymbals and Swastika-musical instruments in their hands walking in front and uttering auspicious songs.

VERSE 38

अक्षतन् जातरूपं च गावः कन्यास्तथा द्विजाः
नरा मोदकहस्ताश्च रामस्य पुरतो ययुः

akṣatan jātarūpaṃ ca gāvaḥ kanyāstathā dvijāḥ
narā modakahastāśca rāmasya purato yayuḥ

VERSE 39

सख्यन् च रामः सुग्रीवे प्रभावं चानिलात्मजे
वानराणान् च तत्कर्म व्याचचक्षेअथ मन्त्रिणाम्

sakhyan ca rāmaḥ sugrīve prabhāvaṃ cānilātmaje
vānarāṇān ca tatkarma vyācacakṣeatha mantriṇām

VERSE 40

श्रुत्वा च विस्मयन् जग्मुरयोध्यापुरवासिनः
वानराणां च तत्कर्म राक्षसानां च तद्बलम्

śrutvā ca vismayan jagmurayodhyāpuravāsinaḥ
vānarāṇāṃ ca tatkarma rākṣasānāṃ ca tadbalam

VERSE 41

विभीषणस्य संयोगमाचचक्षे।अथ मन्त्रिणाम्
द्युतिमानेतदाख्याय रामो वानरसन्वृतः

vibhīṣaṇasya saṃyogamācacakṣe|atha mantriṇām
dyutimānetadākhyāya rāmo vānarasanvṛtaḥ

TRANSLATION

Then, Rama spoke to his counselors about his meeting with Vibhishana. After recounting it, the resplendent Rama entered Ayodhya crowded with happy and rejoiced people, together with the monkeys.

VERSE 42

ततो ह्यभ्युच्छ्रयन्पौराः पताकास्ते गृहे गृहे

tato hyabhyucchrayanpaurāḥ patākāste gṛhe gṛhe

VERSE 43

अथाब्रवीद्राजपुत्रो भरतं धर्मिणां वरम्

athābravīdrājaputro bharataṃ dharmiṇāṃ varam

TRANSLATION

Approaching and entering the palace of the great-souled father, Rama the prince offered salutation to Kausalya, Sumitra and Kaikeyi and spoke the following sweet and meaningful words to Bharata, the foremost among the righteous:

VERSE 45

तच्च मद्भवनन् श्रेष्ठं साशोकवनिकं महत्

tacca madbhavanan śreṣṭhaṃ sāśokavanikaṃ mahat

tasya tadvacanan śrutvā bharataḥ satyavikramaḥ

tatastailapradīpāṃśca paryaṅkāstaraṇāni ca

उवाच च महातेजाः सुग्रीवन् राघवानुजः

uvāca ca mahātejāḥ sugrīvan rāghavānujaḥ

VERSE 49

सौवर्णान्वानरेन्द्राणान् चतुर्णां चतुरो घटान्

sauvarṇānvānarendrāṇān caturṇāṃ caturo ghaṭān

jāmbavāṃśca hanūmāṃśca vegadarśī ca vānaraḥ

TRANSLATION

Jambavan, Hanuma, a monkey called Vegadarshi and Rishabha brought water-jars filled with water. They brought water from five hundred rivers with those jars.

VERSE 54

पूर्वात्समुद्रात्कलशन् जलपूर्णमथानयत्
सुषेणः सत्त्वसम्पन्नः सर्वरत्नविभूषितम्

pūrvātsamudrātkalaśan jalapūrṇamathānayat
suṣeṇaḥ sattvasampannaḥ sarvaratnavibhūṣitam

रक्तचन्दनकर्पूरैः सन्वृतन् काञ्चनं घटम्

ṛṣabho dakṣiṇāttūrṇan samudrājjalamāharat
raktacandanakarpūraiḥ sanvṛtan kāñcanaṃ ghaṭam

गवयः पश्चिमात्तोयमाजहार महार्णवात्
रत्नकुम्भेन महता शीतं मारुतविक्रमः

gavayaḥ paścimāttoyamājahāra mahārṇavāt
ratnakumbhena mahatā śītaṃ mārutavikramaḥ

उत्तराच्च जलन् शीघ्रन् गरुडानिलविक्रमः
आजहार स धर्मात्मा नलः सर्वगुणान्वितः

uttarācca jalan śīghran garuḍānilavikramaḥ
ājahāra sa dharmātmā nalaḥ sarvaguṇānvitaḥ

TRANSLATION

That virtuous Nala, who vied with Garuda (the king of birds) and the wind-god in prowess, and who was endowed with all good qualities, swiftly brought water form the northern sea.

ततसैर्वानरश्रेष्ठैरानीतं प्रेक्ष्य तज्जलम्
अभिषेकाय रामस्य शत्रुघ्नः सचिवैः सह

tatasairvānaraśreṣṭhairānītaṃ prekṣya tajjalam
abhiṣekāya rāmasya śatrughnaḥ sacivaiḥ saha

TRANSLATION

Then, Shatrughna, accompanied by the counsellors, reported to Vasishta, their chief priest and his friends, about that water intended for Rama's coronation brought by those foremost of monkeys.

ततः स प्रयतो वृद्धो वसिष्ठो ब्राह्मणैः सह

tataḥ sa prayato vṛddho vasiṣṭho brāhmaṇaiḥ saha

vasiṣṭho vāmadevaśca jābāliratha kāśyapaḥ

TRANSLATION

Vasishta, Vamadeva, Kashyapa, Katyayana, Suyajna, Gautama and Vijaya consecrated Rama the tiger among men, with clear and fragrant water, as the eight Vasus*

ऋत्विग्भिर्ब्राह्मणैः पूर्वन् कन्याभिर्मन्त्रिभिस्तथा

ṛtvigbhirbrāhmaṇaiḥ pūrvan kanyābhirmantribhistathā

TRANSLATION

Vasishta and others, with much delight got him consecrated first, with brahmanas officiating as priests and by virgins, ministers, warriors, as well as merchants sprinkling the sap of all kinds of medicinal herbs, with the four gods the guardians of the worlds, standing in the air and with all the gods assembled there, sprinkling the sap on Rama.

VERSE 64

ब्रह्मणा निर्मितं पूर्वं किरीटं रत्नशोभितम्

brahmaṇā nirmitaṃ pūrvaṃ kirīṭaṃ ratnaśobhitam

TRANSLATION

With which crown, long ago, Manu the emperor was adorned while he was consecrated and with which, the kings followed in his line were successively adorned while they were coronated, that crown studded with precious jewels, fashioned by Brahma at the beginning of creation and dazzling with splendour, being kept according to practice on a throne adorned with many kinds of precious stones in the council-hall, studded with gold, graced with abundant riches, decorated and shiningly made with most charming jewels of various kinds, and thereafter Rama duly adorned by that crown as well as jewels by the great-souled Vasishta and other priests officiating at the coronation-ceremony.

VERSE 68

छत्रं तस्य च जग्राह शत्रुघ्नः पाण्डुरन् शुभम्

chatraṃ tasya ca jagrāha śatrughnaḥ pāṇḍuran śubham

VERSE 70

मालान् ज्वलन्तीन् वपुषा काञ्चनीं शतपुष्कराम्
राघवाय ददौ वायुर्वासवेन प्रचोदितः

mālān jvalantīn vapuṣā kāñcanīṃ śatapuṣkarām
rāghavāya dadau vāyurvāsavena pracoditaḥ

Encouraged by Indra, the lord of celestials, the wind-god presented to Rama, a golden garland consisting of a hundred lotuses and which looked shining brilliantly.

सर्वरत्नसमायुक्तं मणिरत्नविभूषितम्
मुक्ताहारं नरेन्द्राय ददौ शक्रप्रचोदितः

sarvaratnasamāyuktaṃ maṇiratnavibhūṣitam
muktāhāraṃ narendrāya dadau śakrapracoditaḥ

प्रजगुर्देवगन्धर्वा ननृतुश्चाप्सरो गणाः
अभिषेके तदर्हस्य तदा रामस्य धीमतः

prajagurdevagandharvā nanṛtuścāpsaro gaṇāḥ
abhiṣeke tadarhasya tadā rāmasya dhīmataḥ

SYNONYMS

dhīmataḥ rāmasya abhiṣeke: at that time of coronation-ceremony of intelligent Rama | tadarśasya: who was deserving it | devagandharvāḥ: the celestial musicians among the celestials | prajaguḥ: gracefully sang | apsarogaṇāḥ: and troups of Apsaras (celestial nymphs) | nanṛtuḥ: danced. |

TRANSLATION

On that occasion of the coronation-ceremony of the intelligent Rama, who was well-deserving it, the celestial-musicians among the celestials gracefully sang and troupes of Apsaras (celestial nymphs) danced.

VERSE 73

भूमिः सस्यवती चैव फलवन्तश्च पादपाः
गन्धवन्ति च पुष्पाणि बभूवू राघवोत्सवे

bhūmiḥ sasyavatī caiva phalavantaśca pādapāḥ
gandhavanti ca puṣpāṇi babhūvū rāghavotsave

TRANSLATION

On the occasion of that merriment of coronation to Rama, the earth was bearing a rich crop, the trees were laden with fruits and fragrant flowers.

VERSE 74

सहस्रशतमश्वानान् धेनूनां च गवां तथा
ददौ शतन् वृषान्पूर्वन् द्विजेभ्यो मनुजर्षभः

sahasraśatamaśvānān dhenūnāṃ ca gavāṃ tathā
dadau śatan vṛṣānpūrvan dvijebhyo manujarṣabhaḥ

VERSE 75

त्रिंशत्कोटीर्हिरण्यस्य ब्राह्मणेभ्यो ददौ पुनः
नानाभरणवस्त्राणि महार्हाणि च राघवः

triṃśatkoṭīrhiraṇyasya brāhmaṇebhyo dadau punaḥ
nānābharaṇavastrāṇi mahārhāṇi ca rāghavaḥ

अर्करश्मिप्रतीकाशान् काञ्चनीं मणिविग्रहाम्
सुग्रीवाय स्रजन् दिव्यां प्रायच्छन्मनुजर्षभः

arkaraśmipratīkāśān kāñcanīṃ maṇivigrahām
sugrīvāya srajan divyāṃ prāyacchanmanujarṣabhaḥ

vaidūryamaṇicitre ca vajraratnavibhūṣite
vāliputrāya dhṛtimānaṅgadāyāṅgade dadau

सीतायै प्रददौ रामश्चन्द्ररश्मिसमप्रभम्

maṇipravarajuṣṭan ca muktāhāramanuttamam
sītāyai pradadau rāmaścandraraśmisamaprabham

अवेक्षमाणा वैदेही प्रददौ वायुसूनवे

avekṣamāṇā vaidehī pradadau vāyusūnave

VERSE 81

तामिङ्गितज्ञः सम्प्रेक्ष्य बभाषे जनकात्मजाम्
प्रदेहि सुभगे हारन् यस्य तुष्टासि भामिनि

tāmiṅgitajñaḥ samprekṣya babhāṣe janakātmajām
pradehi subhage hāran yasya tuṣṭāsi bhāmini

TRANSLATION

Looking at her, Rama who was acquainted with the gesture of another spoke to Seetha as follows: "Dear Seetha! Give the pearl-necklace to a person, with whom you are pleased and in whom the following viz. sharpness, firmness, renown, dexterity, competence, modesty, prudence, virility, prowess and intelligence are ever present."

VERSE 83

ददौ सा वायुपुत्राय तन् हारमसितेक्षणा
हनूमान्स्तेन हारेण शुशुभे वानरर्षभः

dadau sā vāyuputrāya tan hāramasitekṣaṇā
hanūmānstena hāreṇa śuśubhe vānararṣabhaḥ

TRANSLATION

The black-eyed Seetha gave that pearl necklace to Hanuma. Hanuma, the foremost among the monkeys, by wearing that necklace, which was as white as a heap of moonlight-beams, shone brilliantly as a mountain silvered by a white cloud.

VERSE 84

सर्वे वानरवृद्धाश्च ये चान्ये वानरोत्तमाः

sarve vānaravṛddhāśca ye cānye vānarottamāḥ

SYNONYMS

sarve vānara vṛddhāśca: all the elder ones among the monkeys | pratipūjitāḥ: were honoured | vāśobhiḥ: with raiments | bhūṣaṇaiścaiva: and ornaments | yathārham: suitably. |

TRANSLATION

All the elder ones among the monkeys and others, who were foremost among the moneys, were honoured suitably with raiment and ornaments.

VERSE 85

ततो द्विविद मैन्दाभ्यां नीलाय च परन्तपः

tato dvivida maindābhyāṃ nīlāya ca parantapaḥ

VERSE 86

विभीषणो।अथ सुग्रीवो हनुमान् जाम्बवांस्तथा

vibhīṣaṇo|atha sugrīvo hanumān jāmbavāṃstathā

TRANSLATION

Rama, who was unwearied in action, then suitably honoured Vibhishana, Sugreeva, Hanuma, Jamabavan and all other eminent monkeys with desired objects and abundant gifts. All of them went back, delighted in mind even as they had come.

VERSE 88

नत्वा सर्वे महात्मानस्ततस्ते वानरर्षभाः

natvā sarve mahātmānastataste vānararṣabhāḥ

SYNONYMS

TRANSLATION

Thereafter, all those excellent great souled monkeys, offering their salutation to Rama and getting permission from him, returned to Kishkindha.

VERSE 89

सुग्रीवो वानरश्रेष्ठो दृष्ट्वा रामाभिषेचनम्

sugrīvo vānaraśreṣṭho dṛṣṭvā rāmābhiṣecanam

Having seen Rama's coronation-ceremony, Sugreeva the chief of monkeys, after getting honoured by Rama, entered the city of Kishkindha.

VERSE 90

विभीषणो।अपि ध्र्मात्मा सह रैर्नैरृतर्षभैः

vibhīṣaṇo|api dhrmātmā saha rairnairṛtarṣabhaiḥ

TRANSLATION

The righteous and the renowned king Vibhishana too, after obtaining the treasure of his race (kingdom of demons), followed by those foremost of demons, returned to Lanka.

VERSE 91

स राज्यमखिलं शासन्निहतारिर्महायशाः

sa rājyamakhilaṃ śāsannihatārirmahāyaśāḥ

TRANSLATION

That renowned Rama, of a very generous nature, having destroyed his enemies and ruling the entire kingdom, enjoyed it with a great delight. Rama, affectionate of righteousness, spoke to Lakshmana, the knower of righteousness (as followers):

VERSE 93

आतिष्ठ धर्मज्ञ मया सहेमां
गां पूर्वराजाध्युषितां बलेन
तुल्यं मया त्वं पितृभिर्धृता या
तां यौवराज्ये धुरमुद्वहस्व

ātiṣṭha dharmajña mayā sahemāṃ
gāṃ pūrvarājādhyuṣitāṃ balena
tulyaṃ mayā tvaṃ pitṛbhirdhṛtā yā
tāṃ yauvarājye dhuramudvahasva

TRANSLATION

"O Lakshmana, the knower of what is right! Rule with me, this earth, as ruled by the earlier kings, with the help of an army. Installed in the office of Prince Regent, bear like me, the burden (of sovereignty), which was borne by our forefathers."

VERSE 94

सर्वात्मना पर्यनुनीयमानो
यदा न सौमित्रिरुपैति योगम्
नियुज्यमानो।अ पि च यावराज्ये
ततो।अभ्यषिञ्चद्भरतं महात्मा

sarvātmanā paryanunīyamāno
yadā na saumitrirupaiti yogam
niyujyamāno|a pi ca yāvarājye
tato|abhyaṣiñcadbharataṃ mahātmā

TRANSLATION

When Lakshmana did not give his consent, even though being repeatedly entreated in all ways, nay even being appointed to the office of Prince Regent, the great-souled Rama thereupon consecrated Bharata.

VERSE 95

पौण्डरीकाश्वमेधाभ्यान् वाजपेयेन चासकृत्
अन्यैश्च विविधैर्यज्ञैरयजत्पार्थिवर्षभः

pauṇḍarīkāśvamedhābhyān vājapeyena cāsakṛt
anyaiśca vividhairyajñairayajatpārthivarṣabhaḥ

Rama propitiated the gods by performing Paundarika, Ashvamedha, Vajapeya and other sacrifices many times.

VERSE 96

राज्यन् दशसहस्राणि प्राप्य वर्षाणि राघवः
शताश्वमेधानाजह्रे सदश्वान्भूरिदक्षिणान्

rājyan daśasahasrāṇi prāpya varṣāṇi rāghavaḥ
śatāśvamedhānājahre sadaśvānbhūridakṣiṇān

SYNONYMS

prāpya: having enjoyed | rājyam: the kingship | daśa sahasrāṇi: for ten thousand | varṣāṇi: years | rāghavaḥ: Rama | ājahre: performed | śatāśvamedhān: a hundred horse-sacrifices | sadaśvān: in which good horses were sacrificed | bhūri dakṣiṇān: and in which numerous gifts were bestowed. |

TRANSLATION

Having enjoyed the kingship for ten thousand years, Rama performed a hundred horse-sacrifices, in which good horses were sacrificed and numerous gifts bestowed.

VERSE 97

आजानुलम्बिबाहुश्च महास्कन्धः प्रतापवान्
लक्ष्मणानुचरो रामः पृथिवीमन्वपालयत्

ājānulambibāhuśca mahāskandhaḥ pratāpavān
lakṣmaṇānucaro rāmaḥ pṛthivīmanvapālayat

TRANSLATION

That Rama, having his long arms reaching down his knees, having a broad chest and glorious, ruled this earth with Lakshmana as his companion.

VERSE 98

राघवश्चापि धर्मात्मा प्राप्य राज्यमनुत्तमम्
ईजे बहुविधैर्यज्ञैः ससुतभ्रातृबान्धवः

rāghavaścāpi dharmātmā prāpya rājyamanuttamam
īje bahuvidhairyajñaiḥ sasutabhrātṛbāndhavaḥ

TRANSLATION

Obtaining a very great kingdom the righteous Rama propitiated the almighty with many kinds of sacrifices, with the team-work of his sons, brothers and relatives.

VERSE 99

न पर्यदेवन्विधवा न च व्यालकृतं भयम्
न व्याधिजं भयन् वापि रामे राज्यं प्रशासति

na paryadevanvidhavā na ca vyālakṛtaṃ bhayam
na vyādhijaṃ bhayan vāpi rāme rājyaṃ praśāsati

SYNONYMS

While Rama was ruling the kingdom, there were no widows to lament, nor there was no danger from wild animals, nor any fear born of diseases.

VERSE 100

निर्दस्युरभवल्लोको नानर्थः कन् चिदस्पृशत्
न च स्म वृद्धा बालानां प्रेतकार्याणि कुर्वते

nirdasyurabhavalloko nānarthaḥ kan cidaspṛśat
na ca sma vṛddhā bālānāṃ pretakāryāṇi kurvate

TRANSLATION

The world was bereft of thieves and robberies. No one felt worthless nor did old people perform obsequies concerning youngsters.

VERSE 101

सर्वं मुदितमेवासीत्सर्वो धर्मपरोअभवत्
राममेवानुपश्यन्तो नाभ्यहिन्सन्परस्परम्

sarvaṃ muditamevāsītsarvo dharmaparoabhavat
rāmamevānupaśyanto nābhyahinsanparasparam

SYNONYMS

Every creature felt pleased. Every one was intent on virtue. Turning their eyes towards Rama alone, creatures did not kill one another.

VERSE 102

आसन्वर्षसहस्राणि तथा पुत्रसहस्रिणः
निरामया विशोकाश्च रामे राज्यं प्रशासति

āsanvarṣasahasrāṇi tathā putrasahasriṇaḥ
nirāmayā viśokāśca rāme rājyaṃ praśāsati

SYNONYMS

TRANSLATION

While Rama was ruling the kingdom, people survived for thousands of years, with thousands of their progeny, all free of illness and grief.

VERSE 103

रामो रामो राम इति प्रजानामभवन् कथाः
रामभूतं जगाभूद्रामे राज्यं प्रशासति

rāmo rāmo rāma iti prajānāmabhavan kathāḥ
rāmabhūtaṃ jagābhūdrāme rājyaṃ praśāsati

While Rama ruled the kingdom, the talks of the people centered round Rama, Rama and Rama. The world became Rama's world.

VERSE 104

नित्यपुष्पा नित्यफलास्तरवः स्कन्धविस्तृताः
कालवर्षी च पर्जन्यः सुखस्पर्शश्च मारुतः

nityapuṣpā nityaphalāstaravaḥ skandhavistṛtāḥ
kālavarṣī ca parjanyaḥ sukhasparśaśca mārutaḥ

SYNONYMS

TRANSLATION

The trees there were bearing flowers and fruits regularly, without any injury by pests and insects. The clouds were raining in time and the wind was delightful to the touch.

VERSE 105

ब्राह्मणाः क्षत्रिया वैश्याः शूद्रा लोभविवर्जिताः
स्वकर्मसु प्रवर्तन्ते तुष्ठाः स्वैरेव कर्मभिः

brāhmaṇāḥ kṣatriyā vaiśyāḥ śūdrā lobhavivarjitāḥ
svakarmasu pravartante tuṣṭhāḥ svaireva karmabhiḥ

brāhmaṇāḥ: Brahmins (the priest-class) | kṣatriyāḥ: Kshatriyas (the warrior-class) | vaiśyāḥ: Vaishyas (the merchants and agriculturists) | śūdrāḥ: Shudras (the servent-class) pravartante = were performing | svakarmasu: their own duties | tuṣṭāḥ: satisfied | svaiḥ karmabhireva: with their own works | lobhavivarjitāh: bereft of greed | rāme: (while) Rama | śāsati: was ruling | prajāḥ: the people | āsan: were | dharmaparāḥ: intent on virtue | na anṛtāḥ: (and lived) without untruth. |

TRANSLATION

Brahmins (the priest-class), Kshatriyas (the warrior-class), Vaishyas (the class of merchants and agriculturists), Shudras (the servant-class) were performing their own duties, satisfied with their own work and bereft of any greed. While Rama was ruling, the people were intent on virtue and lived without telling lies.

VERSE 106

सर्वे लक्षणसम्पन्नाः सर्वे धर्मपरायणाः

sarve lakṣaṇasampannāḥ sarve dharmaparāyaṇāḥ

SYNONYMS

धर्मयं यशस्यमायुष्यं राज्ञां च विजाअवहम्

dharmayaṃ yaśasyamāyuṣyaṃ rājñāṃ ca vijāavaham

In this world, whoever person reads and listens to this foremost lyric derived from the speech of a sage, which is endowed with righteousness, conferring fame and longevity, fetching victory to kings and as written at first by Valmiki, that person is delivered from all misfortune.

VERSE 109

पुत्रकामश्च पुत्रान्वै धनकामो धनानि च
लभते मनुजो लोके श्रुत्वा रामाभिषेचनम्

putrakāmaśca putrānvai dhanakāmo dhanāni ca
labhate manujo loke śrutvā rāmābhiṣecanam

On hearing the narrative of his coronation in this world, a person seeking for sons gets sons. A person looking for wealth, gets the riches. A king conquers the earth and overcomes his enemies.

VERSE 110

राघवेण यथा माता सुमित्रा लक्ष्मणेन च

rāghaveṇa yathā mātā sumitrā lakṣmaṇena ca

TRANSLATION

Even as Kausalya, the mother has Rama as her living son, or as Sumitra has Lakshmana or as Kaikeyi has Bharata, the women likewise can become mothers of living sons, endowed with children as well as grand children and thus become happy forever.

VERSE 112

श्रुत्वा रामायणमिदं दीर्घमायिश्च विन्दति
रामस्य विजयं चैव सर्वमक्लिष्ठकर्मणः

śrutvā rāmāyaṇamidaṃ dīrghamāyiśca vindati
rāmasya vijayaṃ caiva sarvamakliṣṭhakarmaṇaḥ

शृणोति य इत्दं काव्यं पुरा वाल्मीकिना कृतम्
श्रद्दधानो जितक्रोधो दुर्गाण्यतितरत्यसौ

śṛṇoti ya itdaṃ kāvyaṃ purā vālmīkinā kṛtam
śraddadhāno jitakrodho durgāṇyatitaratyasau

samāgamya pravāsānte ramante saha bāndhavaiḥ
śṛṇvanti ya idaṃ kāvyaṃ purā vālmīkinā kṛtam

श्रवणेन सुराः सर्वे प्रीयन्ते संप्रशृण्वताम्

te prārthitān varān sarvān prāpnuvantīha rāghavāt
śravaṇena surāḥ sarve prīyante saṃpraśṛṇvatām

vināyakāśca śāmyanti gṛhe tiṣṭhanti yasya vai
vijayeta mahīṃ rājā pravāsi svastimān bhavet

पूजयंश्च पठंश्चनमितिहासं पुरातनम्

striyo rajasvalāḥ śrutvā putrān sūyuranuttamān
pūjayaṃśca paṭhaṃścanamitihāsaṃ purātanam

VERSE 118

प्रणम्य शिरसा नित्यं श्रोतव्यं क्षत्रियैर्द्विजात्

praṇamya śirasā nityaṃ śrotavyaṃ kṣatriyairdvijāt

The epic is to be listened by warrior-class, after offering their salutation with their heads bent low, from brahmins every day regularly. There is no doubt that the listener and the reader of this entire Ramayana will get lordship and the birth of a son.

VERSE 120

प्रीयते सततं रामः सहि मिष्णुः सनातनः
आदिदेवो महाबाहुर्हरिर्नारायणः प्रभुः

prīyate satataṃ rāmaḥ sahi miṣṇuḥ sanātanaḥ
ādidevo mahābāhurharirnārāyaṇaḥ prabhuḥ

TRANSLATION

Rama gets forever pleased with him who listens to or reads Ramayana daily. He is indeed the eternal Vishnu, the Lord of preservation. Rama is the primordial Lord, clearly placed before the eyes the powerful Lord removing the sins and the great-armed, who has abode on waters (of the ocean of milk) Sesha (the serpent-god forming his couch is said to be Lakshmana.

VERSE 121

एवमेतत्पुरावृत्तमाख्यानं भद्रमस्तु वः

evametatpurāvṛttamākhyānaṃ bhadramastu vaḥ

देवाश्च सर्वे तुष्यन्ति ग्रहणाच्छ्रवणात्तथा

devāśca sarve tuṣyanti grahaṇācchravaṇāttathā

कुटुम्बवृद्धिं धनधान्यवृद्धिं
स्त्रियश्च मुख्याह् सुखमुत्तमं च
श्रुत्वा शुभं काव्यमिदं महार्थं
प्राप्नोति सर्वां भुवि चार्थसिद्धिम्

kuṭumbavṛddhiṃ dhanadhānyavṛddhiṃ
striyaśca mukhyāh sukhamuttamaṃ ca
śrutvā śubhaṃ kāvyamidaṃ mahārthaṃ
prāpnoti sarvāṃ bhuvi cārthasiddhim

इत्यार्षे श्रीमद्रामायणे आदिकाव्ये युद्धकाण्डे अष्टाविंशत्यधिक शततमः सर्गः
