VERSE 1

अयोध्यां तु समालोक्य चिन्तयामास राघवः
प्रियकामः प्रियं रामस्ततस्त्वरितविक्रमम्
अयोध्यां तु समालोक्य चिन्तयामास राघवः
प्रियकामः प्रियं रामस्ततस्त्वरितविक्रमः

ayodhyāṃ tu samālokya cintayāmāsa rāghavaḥ
priyakāmaḥ priyaṃ rāmastatastvaritavikramam
ayodhyāṃ tu samālokya cintayāmāsa rāghavaḥ
priyakāmaḥ priyaṃ rāmastatastvaritavikramaḥ

SYNONYMS

samāloky: looking at | ayodhyām: Ayodhya | rāmaḥ: Rama | rāghavaḥ: born in Raghu dynasty | tvarita vikramaḥ: who was quick in exhibiting prowess | priyakāmaḥ: who wished to do a kindly act | cintayāmāsa: contemplated | tataḥ: thereupon | priyam: to do a kindly act. |

TRANSLATION

Looking at Ayodhya, Rama, a scion of Raghu dynasty, for his part, who wished to do a kindly act and who was quick in exhibiting prowess, contemplated thereupon to do a kindly act.

VERSE 2

चिन्तयित्वा ततो दृष्टिं वानरेषु न्यपातयत्
उवाच धीमांस्तेजस्वी हनूमन्तं प्लवङ्गमम्

cintayitvā tato dṛṣṭiṃ vānareṣu nyapātayat
uvāca dhīmāṃstejasvī hanūmantaṃ plavaṅgamam

SYNONYMS

cintayitvā: having contemplated | dhīmān tejasvī: the sagacious and the glorious Rama | tataḥ: then | nyapātayat: cast | dṛṣṭim: his glimpse | vānareṣu: on the monkeys | uvāca: and spoke | hanūmantam: to Hanuma | plavaṅgamma: the monkey. |

TRANSLATION

Having thus contemplated, the sagacious and the glorious Rama then cast his glimpse on the monkeys and spoke to Hanuma, the monkey (as follows):

VERSE 3

अयोध्यां त्वरितो गच्छ क्षिप्रं त्वं प्लवगोत्तम
जानीहि कच्चित्कुशली जनो नृपतिमन्दिरे

ayodhyāṃ tvarito gaccha kṣipraṃ tvaṃ plavagottama
jānīhi kaccitkuśalī jano nṛpatimandire

SYNONYMS

plavaga sattama: O the foremost of the monkeys! | gatvā: going | tvaritaḥ śīghraḥ: with all speed | ayodhyām: to Ayodhya | jānīhi: find out | janaḥ kuśalī kaccit: whether the people there are sage | nṛpatimandire: in the royal palace. |

TRANSLATION

"O the foremost of the monkeys! Going with all speed to Ayodhya, find out whether the people there, are safe in the royal palace.

VERSE 4

शृङ्गवेरपुरं प्राप्य गुहं गहनगोचरम्
निषादाधिपतिं ब्रूहि कुशलं वचनान्मम

śṛṅgaverapuraṃ prāpya guhaṃ gahanagocaram
niṣādādhipatiṃ brūhi kuśalaṃ vacanānmama

SYNONYMS

prāpya: reaching | śṛṅga berapuram: Shringaberapura | brūhi: communicate | kuśalam: about my welfare | mama vacanāt: in my name | guha: to Guha | niṣādādhipatim: the king of Nishadas | gahanagocaram: who lives in the forest. |

TRANSLATION

"Reaching then to Shrigaberapura, communicate in my name, about my welfare to Guha, the king of Nishadas, a wild tribe living in the forest."

VERSE 5

श्रुत्वा तु मां कुशलिनमरोगं विगतज्वरम्
अविष्यति गुहः प्रीतः स ममात्मसमः सखा

śrutvā tu māṃ kuśalinamarogaṃ vigatajvaram
aviṣyati guhaḥ prītaḥ sa mamātmasamaḥ sakhā

SYNONYMS

guhaḥ: Guha | bhaviṣayti: will be | prītaḥ: pleased | śrutvā: in hearing | mām: about me | ātmasamaḥ: as well as my own self. |

TRANSLATION

"Guha will be pleased to hear about me, as being safe, healthy and free from trouble. He is my friend, as well as my own self."

VERSE 6

अयोध्यायाश्च ते मार्गं प्रवृत्तिं भरतस्य च
निवेदयिष्यति प्रीतो निषादाधिपतिर्गुहः

ayodhyāyāśca te mārgaṃ pravṛttiṃ bharatasya ca
nivedayiṣyati prīto niṣādādhipatirguhaḥ

SYNONYMS

prītaḥ: feeling pleased | guhaḥ: Guha | niṣādādhipatiḥ: the lord of Nishadas | nivedayiṣyati: will tell | te: you | mārgam: the path | ayodhyāyāḥ: to Ayodhya | pravṛttimca: and the news | bharatasya: about Bharata. |

TRANSLATION

Feeling pleased, Guha, the lord of Nishadas, the wild tribe, will tell the path to Ayodhya and the news about Bharata."

VERSE 7

भरतस्तु त्वया वाच्यः कुशलं वचनान्मम
सिद्धार्थं शंस मां तस्मै सभार्यं सहलक्ष्मणम्

bharatastu tvayā vācyaḥ kuśalaṃ vacanānmama
siddhārthaṃ śaṃsa māṃ tasmai sabhāryaṃ sahalakṣmaṇam

SYNONYMS

bharataḥ tu: Bharata too | vācyaḥ: is to be asked by you | mama vacanāt: in my name | kuśalam: the news about his welfare | śamsa: tell | tasmai: him | mām: that me | sabhāryam sahalakṣmaṇam: along with my wife and Lakshmana | siddhārtham: have accomplished on object. |

TRANSLATION

"Bharata too is to be asked by you, the news about his welfare, in my name. Tell him of me as having returned, accomplished of our object, with my consort and Lakshmana."

VERSE 8

हरणं चापि वैदेह्या रावणेन बलीयसा
सुग्रीवेण च संवादं वालिनश्च वधं रणे

haraṇaṃ cāpi vaidehyā rāvaṇena balīyasā
sugrīveṇa ca saṃvādaṃ vālinaśca vadhaṃ raṇe

SYNONYMS

(śamsa): tell him | haraṇam: about the abduction | vaidehyāḥ: of Seetha | balīyasā rāvaṇena: by the mighty Ravana | samvādamca: my conversation | sugrīveṇa: with Sugreeva | vadham: and the killing | vālinaḥ: of Vali | rane: in combat. |

TRANSLATION

"Tell him about the abduction of Seetha by the mighty Ravana, my conversation with Sugreeva and the killing of Vali in combat."

VERSE 9

मैथिल्यन्वेषणं चैव यथा चाधिगता त्वया
लङ्घयित्वा महातोयमापगापतिमव्ययम्

maithilyanveṣaṇaṃ caiva yathā cādhigatā tvayā
laṅghayitvā mahātoyamāpagāpatimavyayam

SYNONYMS

(ṭell him) maithiliyanveṣaṇam caiva: also about the search for Seetha | yathā: and how | adhigatā: she was traced out | tvayā: by you | laṅghayitvā: in crossing | avyayam āpagāpatim: the never-diminishing ocean | mahātoyam: with extensive waters. |

TRANSLATION

"Tell him also about the search for Seetha and how she was traced out by you, after crossing the never-diminishing ocean, having extensive waters."

VERSE 10

उपयानं समुद्रस्य सागरस्य च दर्शनम्
यथा च कारितः सेतू रावणश्च यथा हतः

upayānaṃ samudrasya sāgarasya ca darśanam
yathā ca kāritaḥ setū rāvaṇaśca yathā hataḥ

SYNONYMS

(ṭell him) upayānam: about our going near | samudrasya: the ocean | darśanamca: the appearance | sāgarasya: of the ocean | yathā: and how | setuḥ: the bridge | kāritaḥ: was constructed | rāvaṇaśca: Ravana | hataḥ: was killed. |

TRANSLATION

"Tell him about our going near the ocean, the appearance of the ocean, how the bridge was constructed there and how Ravana was killed."

VERSE 11

वरदानं महेन्द्रेण ब्रह्मणा वरुणेन च
महादेवप्रसादाच्च पित्रा मम समागमम्

varadānaṃ mahendreṇa brahmaṇā varuṇena ca
mahādevaprasādācca pitrā mama samāgamam

SYNONYMS

(ṭell him) varadānam: about the bestowal of boons | mahendreṇa: by Indra the lord of celestials | brahmaṇā: by Brahma the lord of creation | varuṇena: and by Varuna the lord of waters | māma samāgamam: my meeting | pitā: with my (deceased) father | mahādevaprasādena: through the grace of Shiva |

TRANSLATION

"Tell him about the bestower of boons by Indra the lord of celestials, by brahma the lord of creation, and by Varuna the lord of waters, my meeting with my (deceased) father, through the grace of Shiva the Supreme Deity."

VERSE 12

उपयातं च मां सौम्य भरताय निवेदय
सह राक्षसराजेन हरीणामीश्वरेण च

upayātaṃ ca māṃ saumya bharatāya nivedaya
saha rākṣasarājena harīṇāmīśvareṇa ca

SYNONYMS

saumya: O gently Hanuma! | nivedaya: inform | bharatāya: to Bharata | mām: of me | upayātam: as having come near | rākṣasarājena saha: along with Vibhishana | īśvareṇa harīṇām: and Sugreeva the lord of monkeys. |

TRANSLATION

"O gentle Hanuma! Inform to Bharata, of me as having come near Ayodhya, along with Vibhishana and Sugreeva the lord of monkeys."

VERSE 13

जित्वा शत्रुगणान्रामः प्राप्य चानुत्तमं यशः
उपयाति समृद्धार्थः सह मित्रैर्महाबलः

jitvā śatrugaṇānrāmaḥ prāpya cānuttamaṃ yaśaḥ
upayāti samṛddhārthaḥ saha mitrairmahābalaḥ

SYNONYMS

(ṭell him) rāmaḥ: (that) Rama | upāyāti: is coming | jitvā: having conquered | śatrugaṇām: hosts of enemies | prāpyaca: having obtained | anuttamām yaśaḥ: an excellent fame | samṛddhārthaḥ: having accomplished his purpose | mahābalaiḥ mitraiḥ saha: along with his mighty friends. |

TRANSLATION

"Tell him, that having conquered hosts of enemies and obtained an excellent fame, is purpose having been accomplished, Rama is coming near, with is mighty friends."

VERSE 14

एतच्छ्रुत्वा यमाकारं भजते भरतस्ततः
स च ते वेदितव्यः स्यात्सर्वं यच्चापि मां प्रति

etacchrutvā yamākāraṃ bhajate bharatastataḥ
sa ca te veditavyaḥ syātsarvaṃ yaccāpi māṃ prati

SYNONYMS

saḥ ca: it is also | veditavyaḥ: to be known | te: by you | ākāram: the facial expression | yan: which | bhajate: he obtained | śrutvā: after having heard | etat: this | sarvam: all | yaccāpi: syaat = that he intends to do | mām prati: in relation to me. |

TRANSLATION

"It is also to be observed by you, about the facial expression which Bharata wears, after hearing all this and also all that he intends to do in relation to me."

VERSE 15

ज्ञेयाः सर्वे च वृत्तान्ता भरतस्येङ्गितानि च
तत्त्वेन मुखवर्णेन दृष्ट्या व्याभाषणेन च

jñeyāḥ sarve ca vṛttāntā bharatasyeṅgitāni ca
tattvena mukhavarṇena dṛṣṭyā vyābhāṣaṇena ca

SYNONYMS

sarveca: all | vṛttāntāḥ: the occurances | ñeyāḥ: are to be known | mukhavarnena: by the colour of his face | dṛṣṭyā: by his glances | vyābhāṣitena: and by his speech | iṅgitāni: gestures | bharatasya: of Bharata | tattvataḥ: are to be really | jñeyāḥ: known. |

TRANSLATION

"All the occurrences there are to be known. All the gestures of Bharata are to be ascertained through the colour of his face, glances and the speech."

VERSE 16

सर्वकामसमृद्धं हि हस्त्यश्वरथसङ्कुलम्
पितृपैतामहं राज्यं कस्य नावर्तयेन्मनः

sarvakāmasamṛddhaṃ hi hastyaśvarathasaṅkulam
pitṛpaitāmahaṃ rājyaṃ kasya nāvartayenmanaḥ

SYNONYMS

kasya: whose | manaḥ: mind | na āvartayet: does not turn round | rājyam: with a kingdom | sarvakāma samṛddham: abundantly rich in all coveted enjoyments | hastyaśvaratha samkulam: teeming with elephants | pitṛpaitāmaham: and which is inherited from one's father? |

TRANSLATION

"Whose mind does not turn round, with a kingdom abundantly rich in all coveted enjoyments, teeming with elephants horses and chariots and which is in herited from one's father?"

VERSE 17

संगत्या भरतः श्रीमान्राज्येनार्थी स्वयं भवेत्
प्रशास्तु वसुधां सर्वामखिलां रघुनन्दनः

saṃgatyā bharataḥ śrīmānrājyenārthī svayaṃ bhavet
praśāstu vasudhāṃ sarvāmakhilāṃ raghunandanaḥ

SYNONYMS

samgatyā: having been associated (for long) | rājyena: with the kingdom | bhavet śrīmān bharataḥ: if the illustrious Bharata | arthī: has a desire | svayam: for himself | raghunanadanaḥ: (let) Bharata | praśāstu: rule | sarvām vasudhām: the entire kingdom | akhilām: in one piece. |

TRANSLATION

"Having been associated with the kingdom for long, if the illustrious Bharata is longing for it himself, let Bharata rule the entire kingdom in one piece."

VERSE 18

तस्य बुद्धिं च विज्ञाय व्यवसायं च वानर
यावन्न दूरं याताः स्मः क्षिप्रमागन्तुमर्हसि

tasya buddhiṃ ca vijñāya vyavasāyaṃ ca vānara
yāvanna dūraṃ yātāḥ smaḥ kṣipramāgantumarhasi

SYNONYMS

vānara: O Hanuma! | viñāya: understanding | tasya: his | buddhim: mind | vyavasāyamca: and perception | arhasi: you ought | āgantum: to come | kṣipram: quickly | yāvat dūram na yātā smaḥ: before we do not go for a long distance towards Ayodhya. |

TRANSLATION

"O Hanuma! Understanding his mind and perception, you ought to return quickly, before we are not gone for a long distance towards Ayodhya."

VERSE 19

इति प्रतिसमादिष्टो हनूमान्मारुतात्मजः
मानुषं धारयन्रूपमयोध्यां त्वरितो ययौ

iti pratisamādiṣṭo hanūmānmārutātmajaḥ
mānuṣaṃ dhārayanrūpamayodhyāṃ tvarito yayau

SYNONYMS

iti: thus | pratisamādiṣṭaḥ: commanded | hanuman: hanuma | mārutātmajaḥ: the son of wind-god | dhārayan: assuming | mānuṣam rūpam: a human form | tvaritaḥ: swiftly | yayau: went | ayodhyām: to Ayodhya. |

TRANSLATION

Assuming a human form, when thus commanded by Rama, Hanuma the son of wind-god, swiftly left for Ayodhya.

VERSE 20

अथोत्पपात वेगेन हनूमान् मारुतात्मजः
गरुत्मानिव वेगेन जिघृक्षन् पन्नगोत्तमम्

athotpapāta vegena hanūmān mārutātmajaḥ
garutmāniva vegena jighṛkṣan pannagottamam

SYNONYMS

garutmāniva: as Garuda the eagle | (flies) vegena: speedily | jighṛkṣan: with an intention to seize | pannagottamam: a large snake | mārutātmajaḥ: Hanuma the son of wind-god | atha: then | utpapāta: flew up | vegena: with speed. |

TRANSLATION

Hanuma, the son of wind-god then flew up with speed towards Ayodhya, as Garuda the eagle would fly with speed, while seeking to catch a large snake.

VERSE 21

लङ्घयित्वा पितृपथं भुजगेन्द्रालयं शुभम्
गङ्गायमुनयोर्भीमं संनिपातमतीत्य च

laṅghayitvā pitṛpathaṃ bhujagendrālayaṃ śubham
gaṅgāyamunayorbhīmaṃ saṃnipātamatītya ca

TRANSLATION

Leaping into the auspicious sky, the dwelling place of birds, duly crossing over the terrific conjunction of Ganga and Yamuna rivers, reaching Shringaverapura and approaching Guha (the chief of Nishadas), that valiant Hanuma spoke the following words in a charming voice:

VERSE 23

सखा तु तव काकुत्स्थो रामः सत्यपराक्रमः
ससीतः सह सौमित्रिः स त्वां कुशलमब्रवीत्

sakhā tu tava kākutstho rāmaḥ satyaparākramaḥ
sasītaḥ saha saumitriḥ sa tvāṃ kuśalamabravīt

SYNONYMS

saḥ rāmaḥ: that Rama | tava sakhā: your friend | kākutthsaḥ: born in Kakutthsa dynasty | satya parākramaḥ: who is true in his prowess | sa sītaḥ: along with Seetha | saha saumitriḥ: and Lakshmana | abravīt: enquired | tvām kuśalam: of your welfare. |

TRANSLATION

"Along with Seetha and Lakshmana, Rama, your friend, that scion of Kakutthsa, of true prowess, has for his part enquired of your welfare."

VERSE 24

पञ्चमीमद्य रजनीमुषित्वा वचनान्मुनेः
भरद्वाजाभ्यनुज्ञातं द्रक्ष्यस्यद्यैव राघवम्

pañcamīmadya rajanīmuṣitvā vacanānmuneḥ
bharadvājābhyanujñātaṃ drakṣyasyadyaiva rāghavam

SYNONYMS

drakṣyasi: you can see | rāghavam: Rama | adyaiva: here itself today | bharadvājānuñātam: when he has been duly permitted by Bharadwaja the sage | uṣitvā: after spending | muneḥ: vachanaat = at the instance of the sage | rājanīm: for a night | paṅcamīm: of the fifth lunar day (of the bright half of the month of Ashvayuja). |

TRANSLATION

"You can see Rama here itself today, when he has been duly permitted by Bharadwaja the sage, after spending, at the instance of the sage, for a night of the fifth lunar day (of the bright half of the month of Ashvayuja)."

VERSE 25

एवमुक्त्वा महातेजाः सम्प्रहृष्टतनूरुहः
उत्पपात महावेगो वेगवानविचारयन्

evamuktvā mahātejāḥ samprahṛṣṭatanūruhaḥ
utpapāta mahāvego vegavānavicārayan

SYNONYMS

vegavān: that swift moving Hanuma | samprahṛṣṭa tanūruhah: with his rejoicingly feather-like body | mahā tejāḥ: and with a great splendor | avicārayan: not thinking of his fatigue | utpapāta: sprang up | mahāvegāt: with a great speed. |

TRANSLATION

That swift-moving Hanuma, with his rejoicingly feather-like body and with a great splendor, not thinking of his fatigue, sprang up with a great speed.

VERSE 26

सो।अपश्यद्रामतीर्थं च नदीं वालुकिनीं तथा
वरूथीं गोमतीं चैव भीमं सालवनं तथा

so|apaśyadrāmatīrthaṃ ca nadīṃ vālukinīṃ tathā
varūthīṃ gomatīṃ caiva bhīmaṃ sālavanaṃ tathā

SYNONYMS

saḥ: Hanuma | apaśyat: saw | rāmatīrtham: Ramatirtha | tathā: and | vālukinīm nadīm: the rivers VAlukini | varūthīm: Varuthini | gomatīm caiva: and Gomati | bhīmam: the formidable | śālavanam: forest of Sala trees | bahusāhasrīḥ: and many thousands | prajāśca: of people | sphītān: and numerous | janapadānapi: communities. |

TRANSLATION

Hanuma saw, on the way, Ramatirtha, a place of descent into the river (hallowed by the association of Lord Parashurama), as well as the rivers Valukini, Varuthini and Gomati as also the formidable forest of Sala trees, many thousands of people and numerous communities.

VERSE 27

स गत्वा दूरमध्वानं त्वरितः कपिकुञ्जरः

sa gatvā dūramadhvānaṃ tvaritaḥ kapikuñjaraḥ

SYNONYMS

-28| gatvā: going | tvaritaḥ: quickly | dūram adhvānam: for a long distance | saḥ kapiśreṣṭaḥ: that foremost of the monkeys | āsasāda: reached | phullān drumān: the trees in flowering | nandigrāma samīpān: near Nandigrama | surādhipasya upavane caitrarathe drumān yathā: and looking like those comprised in the garden of Indra the lord of celestials and comprised in the garden of Indra the lord of celestials and the garden of Kubera (known by the name Chaitraratha) | ramamāṇaiḥ: and frequented | strībhiḥ: by women | saputraiḥ: along with their sons | vṛddhaiśca: and elders | svalamkṛtaiḥ: charmingly adorned. |

TRANSLATION

Going quickly for a long distance, that foremost of the monkeys reached trees in flowering, near Nandigrama and looking like those comprised in the garden of Kubera (known by the name, Chitraratha) and frequented by women along with their sons and elders, charmingly adorned as they were.

VERSE 29

क्रोशमात्रे त्वयोध्यायाश्चीरकृष्णाजिनाम्बरम्

krośamātre tvayodhyāyāścīrakṛṣṇājināmbaram

-33| krośamātre: at a distance of two miles | ayodhāyāḥ: from Ayodhya | dadarśa: (Hanuma) saw | bharatam: Bharata | āśrama vāsinam: living in a hermitage | cīra kṛśṇājināmbaram: with the bark of trees and the skin of a black antelope wrapped round his waist | dīnam kṛśam: looking miserable and emaciated | jaṭilam: wearing matted locks on his head | mala digdhāṅgam: his limbs coated with dirt | bhrātṛvyasana karśitam: afflicted through separation from his elder brother | phalamūlāśinam: subsisting on fruits and roots | dāntam: with his senses subdued | tāpasam: engaged in austerities | dharma cāriṇam: practising virtue | samunnata jaṭābhāram: with a very high head of matted hair | valkalājina vāsinam: covering his body too with the bark of trees and a deer-skin | niyatam: disciplined | bhāvitātmānam: whose thoughts were fixed on the Supreme Spirit | brahmarṣisamatejasam: with a splendour | praśāsantam: ruling | vasumdharām: the earth | puraskṛtya te pāduke: after placing the wooden sandals (of Rama) before him | trātāram: protecting | lokasya cāturvarṇyasya: the people belonging to all the four grades (viz. Brahmanas | sarvataḥ bhayāt: from all peril | upasthitam: and attended | śucibhiḥ: by the upright amaatyaishcha = ministers | purohitaiḥ: priests | yuktaiḥ balamukhyaiśca: and by clever troop-commanders | kāṣāyāmbara dhāribhiḥ: all clad in saffron robes. |

TRANSLATION

At a distance of two miles from Ayodhya Hanuama saw Bharata, living in a hermitage, with the bark trees and the skin of a black antelope wrapped round his waist, looking miserable and emaciated, wearing matted locks on his head, his limbs coated with dirt, afflicted through separation from Rama his elder brother, subsisting on roots and fruits, with his senses subdued, engaged in austerities, protecting virtue, with a very high head of matted hair, covering his body with the bark of trees and a deer skin, disciplined, whose thoughts were fixed on the Supreme Spirit, with a splendour equalling that of a Brahmanical sage, ruling the earth after placing the wooden sandals before him, protecting the people belonging to all the four grades (viz. Brahmans Kshatriyas, Vaisyas and Shudras) from all peril and attended by the upright ministers, priests and by clever troop-commanders, all clad in saffron robes.

VERSE 34

न हि ते राजपुत्रं तं चीरकृष्णाजिनाम्बरम्

na hi te rājaputraṃ taṃ cīrakṛṣṇājināmbaram

SYNONYMS

te paurāḥ: those citizens | dharma vatsalāḥ: who were all fond of righteousness | navyavasyanti hi: were not indeed willing paribhoktum = to enjoy pleasures ignoring | tam rājaputram: that prince | cīran kṛṣṇājināmbaram: clad in the bark of trees and the skin of a black antelope. |

TRANSLATION

Those citizens, who were all fond of righteousness, were not willing to enjoy pleasures, ignoring that prince clad in the bark of trees and the skin of a black antelope.

VERSE 35

तं धर्ममिव धर्मज्ञं देववन्तमिवापरम्

taṃ dharmamiva dharmajñaṃ devavantamivāparam

TRANSLATION

With joined palms in salutation, Hanuma the son of wind-god spoke as follows to that Bharata, who knew what is right and seemed to be a second Dharma (the god of virtue) clothed with a body of virtue:

VERSE 36

वसन्तं दण्डकारण्ये यं त्वं चीरजटाधरम्

vasantaṃ daṇḍakāraṇye yaṃ tvaṃ cīrajaṭādharam

SYNONYMS

vasantam: who was residing | daṅḍakāraṅya: in the forest of Dandaka | cīra jaṭāadharam: wearing the bark of trees and matted locks | kākutthsam: Rama | yam anuśocasi: for whom you were repenting | saḥ: that Rama | abravīt: has enquired | tvām: you | kauśalam: about your welfare. |

TRANSLATION

"Rama, for whom you are repenting residing as he was in the forest of Dandaka wearing the bark of trees and matted locks, has enquired about your welfare."

VERSE 37

प्रियमाख्यामि ते देव शोकं त्यक्ष्यसि दारुणम्

priyamākhyāmi te deva śokaṃ tyakṣyasi dāruṇam

SYNONYMS

deva: O Lord! | ākhyāmi: I am telling | te: you | priyam: a pleasant news | tyaja: give up | sudāruṇam: the dreadful anguish | asmin muhūrte: at this moment | tvam: you | samgataḥ: joined | rāmeṇa saha: with Rama | bhrātrā: your elder brother. |

TRANSLATION

"O Lord! I am telling you a pleasant news. Give up this dreadful anguish. Within a while, you will be meeting Rama, your elder brother."

VERSE 38

निहत्य रावणं रामः प्रतिलभ्य च मैथिलीम्

nihatya rāvaṇaṃ rāmaḥ pratilabhya ca maithilīm

SYNONYMS

nihatya: having killed | rāvaṇam: Ravana | pratilabhya: and having got back | maithilīm: Seetha | rāmaḥ: Rama | samṛddhārthaḥ: having accomplished his purpose | upayāti: is coming | mahābalaiḥ mitraiḥ saha: with his mighty friends. |

TRANSLATION

"Having killed Ravana and got back Seetha, Rama is returning with his mighty friends, his purpose duly accomplished."

VERSE 39

लक्ष्मणश्च महातेजा वैदेही च यशस्विनी

lakṣmaṇaśca mahātejā vaidehī ca yaśasvinī

SYNONYMS

lakṣmaṇaśca: Lakshmana too | mahātejāḥ: who is endowed with extra ordinary energy | samagrā sītā: intact with Seetha | yaśasvinī vaidehī: the illustrious princess of Videha territory | rāmeṇa: and with Rama | śacī yathā: as Sachi (the wife of Indra) mahendreNa = would with the mighty Indra the lord of celestials. |

TRANSLATION

"Lakshmana too, who is endowed with extraordinary energy, is coming intact with Seetha, the illustrious princess of Videha territory and with Rama as Sachi (the wife of Indra) would with the mighty Indra the lord of celestials."

VERSE 40

एवमुक्तो हनुमता भरतः कैकयीसुतः

evamukto hanumatā bharataḥ kaikayīsutaḥ

evam: thus | uktaḥ: spoke | hanumatā: by Hanuma | bharataḥ: Bharata | kaikeyīsutaḥ: the son of Kaikeyi | hṛṣṭaḥ: felt delighted | papāta: and sank | sahasā: all at once | bhūmau: to the ground | upāgamat moham: and fainted | harṣāt: through joy. |

TRANSLATION

Hearing the words of Hanuma, Bharata the son of Kaikeyi, felt delighted and sank all at once to the ground as also fainted through joy.

VERSE 41

ततो मुहूर्तादुत्थाय प्रत्याश्वस्य च राघवः

tato muhūrtādutthāya pratyāśvasya ca rāghavaḥ

SYNONYMS

tataḥ: thereupon | bharataḥ: Bharata | rāghavaḥ: who was born in Raghu dynasty | uttāya: got up | muhūrtāt: within a while | pratyāśvasya: and regaining his consciousness | uvāca: spoke | idam: the following words hanuumantam = to Hanuma | priya vādinam: who spoke pleasant tidings (to him). |

TRANSLATION

Thereupon, Bharata who was born in Raghu dynasty, got up from the swoon within a while and regaining his consciousness, spoke the following words to Hanuma, who spoke pleasant tidings to him.

VERSE 42

अशोकजैः प्रीतिमयैः कपिमालिङ्ग्य सम्भ्रमात्

aśokajaiḥ prītimayaiḥ kapimāliṅgya sambhramāt

TRANSLATION

Embracing Hanuma with eagerness, the illustrious Bharata bathed him with copious tear-drops born of delight and as such, other than those born of anguish.

VERSE 43

देवो वा मानुषो वा त्वमनुक्रोशादिहागतः

devo vā mānuṣo vā tvamanukrośādihāgataḥ

TRANSLATION

"O the gentle one! Are you a divine being or a human being, who have come here out of compassion? To you, who have given this agreeable news to me, I shall give in return, for the pleasant tidings, a hundred thousand cows, a hundred best villages, and for wives, sixteen golden complexioned virgin girls of a good conduct, decked with ear-rings, having beautiful noses and thighs, adorned with all kinds of jewels, with charming countenances as delightful as the moon and born in a noble family."

VERSE 46

इत्यार्षे श्रीमद्रामायणे आदिकाव्ये युद्धकाण्डे पञ्चविंशत्यधिकशततमः सर्गः

ityārṣe śrīmadrāmāyaṇe ādikāvye yuddhakāṇḍe pañcaviṃśatyadhikaśatatamaḥ sargaḥ

Hearing the news of Rama's arrival resembling a womnder, from Hanuma, Bharata the prince felt overjoyed by a desire to see Rama and spoke the following words again with delight:
