Yuddha Kanda - Book Of War

VERSE 1

तां तु पार्श्वे स्थितां प्रह्वां रामः संप्रेक्ष्ये मैथिलीम्
हृदयान्तर्गतं भावं व्याहर्तुमुपचक्रमे

tāṃ tu pārśve sthitāṃ prahvāṃ rāmaḥ saṃprekṣye maithilīm
hṛdayāntargataṃ bhāvaṃ vyāhartumupacakrame

SYNONYMS

samprekṣya: seeing | tām maithilīm: that Seetha | sthitām: who stood | pārśve: at his vicinity | prahvām: bowing low | rāmaḥ: Rama | upacakrame: began | vyāhartum: to tell | bhāvam: his feeling | hṛdayāntargatam: hidden in his heart (as follows). |

TRANSLATION

Seeing that Seetha, who stood at his vicinity bowing low, Rama began to tell his feeling hidden in his heart (as follows):

VERSE 2

एषासि निर्जिता भद्रे शत्रुं जित्वा रणाजिरे
पौरुषाद्यदनुष्ठेयं मयैतदुपपादितम्

eṣāsi nirjitā bhadre śatruṃ jitvā raṇājire
pauruṣādyadanuṣṭheyaṃ mayaitadupapāditam

SYNONYMS

bhadre: my dear lady! | eṣā: you | asi: are | nirjitā: won back (by me) | jitvā: after conquering | śatrum: the enemy | raṇājire: in the battle-field | tat yat: that which | anuṣṭheyam: is to be done | pauruṣāt: through human effort | upapāditam: has been accomplished | mayā: by me. |

TRANSLATION

"You are won back by me, after conquering the enemy in the battle-field, my dear lady! That which is to be done through human effort, has been accomplished by me."

VERSE 3

गतो।अस्म्यन्तममर्षस्य धर्षणा संप्रमार्जिता
अवमानश्च शत्रश्च युगपन्निहतौ मया

gato|asmyantamamarṣasya dharṣaṇā saṃpramārjitā
avamānaśca śatraśca yugapannihatau mayā

SYNONYMS

gataḥ asmi: I have come to | antam: the end | amarṣasya: of my indignation | dharṣaṇā: and my outrage | sampramārjitā: has been completely requited | śatruśca: and the enemy | anumānaśca: as well as the contempt | nihatau: have been wiped out | yugavat: all at once | mayā: by me. |

TRANSLATION

"I have come to the end of my indignation and my outrage has been completely requited as also the contempt against the enemy have been wiped out, all at once, by me."

VERSE 4

अद्य मे पौरुषं दृष्टमद्य मे सफलः श्रमः
अद्य तीर्णप्रतिज्ञो।अहं प्रभवाम्यद्य चात्मनः

adya me pauruṣaṃ dṛṣṭamadya me saphalaḥ śramaḥ
adya tīrṇapratijño|ahaṃ prabhavāmyadya cātmanaḥ

SYNONYMS

adya: today | me: my | pauruṣam: manly strength | dṛṣṭam: has been seen (by all) | śramaḥ: toil | saphalaḥ: has borne fruit | aham: I | tīrṇa pratijñaḥ: have fulfilled my promise | prabhavāmi: I am the master | ātmanaḥ: of myself. |

TRANSLATION

"Now, my manly strength has been seen by all. Today, my toil has borne fruit. Now, I have fulfilled my promise. Today, I am the master of myself."

VERSE 5

या त्वं विरहिता नीता चलचित्तेन रक्षसा
दैवसंपादितो दोषो मानुषेण मया जितः

yā tvaṃ virahitā nītā calacittena rakṣasā
daivasaṃpādito doṣo mānuṣeṇa mayā jitaḥ

SYNONYMS

yā tvam: you | virahitā: became deserted from me | nītā: was taken away | calacittena rakṣasā: by a ficle-minded demon | doṣaḥ: the wrong | daivasampāditaḥ: brought about by the destiny jitaH = has been corrected | mayā: by me | mānuṣeṇa: a human being. |

TRANSLATION

"The wrong done to you, when you were deserted from me, in that you were taken away by a fickle-minded demon, which was ordained by the destiny, has been corrected by me as a human being."

VERSE 6

संप्राप्तमवमानं यस्तेजसा न प्रमार्जति
कस्तस्य पौरुषेणार्थो महताप्यल्पचेतसः

saṃprāptamavamānaṃ yastejasā na pramārjati
kastasya pauruṣeṇārtho mahatāpyalpacetasaḥ

SYNONYMS

kaḥ arthaḥ: what is the use | pauruṣeṇa: of a prowess | tasya mahatāpi alpacetasḥ: of a weak-minded man | yaḥ na pramārjati: who does not wipe out | samprāptam avamānam: the insult fallen to his lot | tejasā: by means of his energy? |

TRANSLATION

"What is the use of a prowess, however great, of that weak-minded man who does not wipe out, by his energy, the insult fallen to his lot?"

VERSE 7

लङ्घुनं समुद्रस्य लङ्कायाश्चापि मर्दनम्
सफलं तस्य च श्लाघ्यमद्य कर्म हनूमतः

laṅghunaṃ samudrasya laṅkāyāścāpi mardanam
saphalaṃ tasya ca ślāghyamadya karma hanūmataḥ

SYNONYMS

ślāghya: the praise-worthy | karma: act | tasya hanūmataḥ: of that Hanuma | laṅghanam: (namely) the crossing | samudrasya: of the ocean | mardanam ca: and the destroying | laṅkāyāḥ: of Lanka | laṇk͟hāyāḥ: of Lanka | adya: today | saphalam: has borne fruit. |

TRANSLATION

"The praise-worthy act of Hanuma in the form of crossing of the ocean and the destroying of Lanka, has borne fruit today."

VERSE 8

युद्धे विक्रमतश्चैव हितं मन्त्रयतस्तथा
सुग्रीवस्य ससैन्यस्य सफलो।अद्य परिश्रमः

yuddhe vikramataścaiva hitaṃ mantrayatastathā
sugrīvasya sasainyasya saphalo|adya pariśramaḥ

SYNONYMS

pariśramaḥ: the endeavour | sugrīvasya: of Sugreeva | sa sainyaśca: together with his army | vikramataḥ: for his attack | yuddhe: in the battle | tathā: and | mantrayataḥ: his counsel | hitam: of a good advice | saphalah: is fruitful | adya: today. |

TRANSLATION

"The endeavour of Sugreeva, who exhibited his prowess on the battle-field with his army and tendered a good advice, is fruitful today."

VERSE 9

विभीषणस्य च तथा सफलो।अद्य परिश्रमः
विगुणं भ्रातरं त्वक्त्वा यो मां स्वयमुपस्थितः

vibhīṣaṇasya ca tathā saphalo|adya pariśramaḥ
viguṇaṃ bhrātaraṃ tvaktvā yo māṃ svayamupasthitaḥ

SYNONYMS

tathā: furthermore | pariśramaśca: the exertion | vibhīṣaṇaśca: of Vibhishana | yaḥ: who | tyaktvā: after abandoning | bhrātaram: his brother | viguṇam: who was void of good qualities | svayam: andpersonall | upasthitaḥ: reached | mām: me | saphalaḥ: is fruitful | adya: today. |

TRANSLATION

"Furthermore, the exertion of Vibhishana, who after deserting his brother who was void of good qualities, sought my presence, is fruitful today.

VERSE 10

इत्येवं वदतः श्रुत्वा सीता रामस्य तद्वचः
मृगीवोत्फुल्लनयना बभूवाश्रुपरिप्लुता

ityevaṃ vadataḥ śrutvā sītā rāmasya tadvacaḥ
mṛgīvotphullanayanā babhūvāśrupariplutā

SYNONYMS

śrutvā: hearing | tat: those | vacaḥ: words | vadataḥ: spoken | tiyevam: thus | rāmasya: by Rama | sītā: Seetha | utphullanayanā: her eyes wide open | mṛgīva: like those of a female-deer | aśrupariplutā: filled with tears. |

TRANSLATION

Hearing those words spoken thus by Rama, Seetha with her eyes wide open like those of a female-deer, was bathed in tears.

VERSE 11

पश्यतस्तां तु रामस्य समीपे हृदयप्रियाम्
जनवादभयाद्राज्ञो बभूव हृदयं द्विधा

paśyatastāṃ tu rāmasya samīpe hṛdayapriyām
janavādabhayādrājño babhūva hṛdayaṃ dvidhā

SYNONYMS

hṛdayam: the heart | rājñaḥ rāmasya: of King Rama | paśyataḥ: as he saw | tām: Seetha (hR^idaya priyaam = the beloved of his heart) | samīpe: near him | babhūva dvidha: was torn | janavāda bhayāt: for fear of the talk of the public. |

TRANSLATION

The heart of King Rama, as he saw Seetha, (the beloved of his heart) near him, was torn for fear of public scandal.

VERSE 12

सीतामुत्पलपत्राक्षीं नीलकुञ्चितमूर्धजाम्
अवदद्वै वरारोहां मध्ये वानररक्षसाम्

sītāmutpalapatrākṣīṃ nīlakuñcitamūrdhajām
avadadvai varārohāṃ madhye vānararakṣasām

SYNONYMS

madhye: in the midst | vānara rākṣasām: of monkeys and demons | avadat vai: Rama spoke | sītām: to Seetha | utpala patrākṣīm: whose eyes resembled the petals of a lotus | nīla kuṅjitu mūrdhajām: hair | vanārohām: and hips |

TRANSLATION

In the midst of monkeys and demons, Rama spoke (as follows) to Seetha, whose eyes resembled the petals of a lotus, who wore dark curly hair and was endowed with fine hips.

VERSE 13

यत्कर्तव्यं मनुष्येण धर्षणां प्रतिमार्जता
तत्कृतं रावणं हत्वा मयेदं मानकाङ्क्क्षिणा

yatkartavyaṃ manuṣyeṇa dharṣaṇāṃ pratimārjatā
tatkṛtaṃ rāvaṇaṃ hatvā mayedaṃ mānakāṅkkṣiṇā

SYNONYMS

mayā: by me | mānakāṅkṣiṇā: wanting for an honour | tat idam: this particular act | yat: which | kartavyam: ought to be done | manuṣyeṇa: by a man | kṛtam: has been done | hatvā: in killing | rāvaṇam: Ravana | pratimārjitā: and thus wiping away | dharṣaṇām: the insult. |

TRANSLATION

"I, wanting for an honour, have done this particular act, which ought to be done by a man, in killing Ravana and thus wiping away the insult meted out to me."

VERSE 14

निर्जिता जीवलोकस्य तपसा भावितात्मना
अगस्त्येन दुराधर्षा मुनिना दक्षिणेव दिक्

nirjitā jīvalokasya tapasā bhāvitātmanā
agastyena durādharṣā muninā dakṣiṇeva dik

SYNONYMS

nirjitā: (you have been) won by me | bhāvitātmanā: whose mind stands purified | tapasā: by asceticism | dakṣiṇā dik iva: as the southern quarter | durādharṣā: which was difficult to be approached | jīvalokasya: by the world of mortals | (vas conquered by) agastyena: by the Sage Agastya. |

TRANSLATION

"You have been won by me, whose mind stands purified by asceticism as the southern quarter, which was difficult to be approached by the world of mortals, was conquered by the Sage Agastya."

VERSE 15

विदितश्चास्तु भद्रं ते यो।अयं रणपरिश्रमः
सुतीर्णः सुहृदां वीर्यान्न त्वदर्थं मया कृतः

viditaścāstu bhadraṃ te yo|ayaṃ raṇapariśramaḥ
sutīrṇaḥ suhṛdāṃ vīryānna tvadarthaṃ mayā kṛtaḥ

SYNONYMS

-16| viditaḥ astu: let it be known (to you) | ayam yuddhapariśramaḥ: that this endeavour in the shape of war | sutīrṇaḥ: which has been successfully carried through | vīryāt: due to the strength | suhṛdām: of my friends | na kṛtaḥ: was not undertakne | tvadartham: for your sake | te bhadram astu: let there be happiness to you! | mayā: (this was done) by me | rakṣatā: in order to keep up | vṛtam: my good conduct | parimārjitā: and wipe off | apavādam ca: the evil-speaking | sarvataḥ: from all sides | nyaṇgam: as well as the insinuation | prakhyātasya ātmavamśasya: on my own illustrious dynasty. |

TRANSLATION

"Let it be known to you that this endeavor in the shape of war, which has been successful carried through, due to the strength of my friends was not undertaken for your sake. Let there be prosperity to you! This was done by me in order to keep up my good conduct and to wipe off the evil-speaking from all sides as well as the insinuation on my own illustrious dynasty."

VERSE 17

प्राप्तचारित्रसंदेह मम प्रतिमुखे स्थिता
दीपो नेत्रातुरस्येव प्रतिकूलासि मे दृढम्

prāptacāritrasaṃdeha mama pratimukhe sthitā
dīpo netrāturasyeva pratikūlāsi me dṛḍham

SYNONYMS

prāpta cāritra sandehā: (You) with a suspicion arisen on your character | sthitā: standing | pratimukhe: in front of | mama: me | dṛḍham pratikūlā api: are extremely disagreeable | me: to me | dīpaḥ iva: even as a light | netrāturasya: to one |

TRANSLATION

"You, with a suspicion arisen on your character, standing in front of me, are extremely disagreeable to me, even as a light to one, who is suffering from a poor eye-sight."

VERSE 18

तद्गच्छ त्वानुजाने।अद्य यथेष्टं जनकात्मजे
एता दश दिशो भद्रे कार्यमस्ति न मे त्वया

tadgaccha tvānujāne|adya yatheṣṭaṃ janakātmaje
etā daśa diśo bhadre kāryamasti na me tvayā

SYNONYMS

janakātmaje: O Seetha! | tat: that is why | anujāne: I am permitting | tvā: you | adya: now | gaccha: go | yatheṣṭam: wherever you like | tetāḥ daśa diśaḥ: to any of these ten directions | nāsti: there is no | kāryam: work to be done | me: to me | tvayā: by you | bhadre: my dear lady! |

TRANSLATION

"O Seetha! That is why, I am permitting you now. Go wherever you like. All these ten directions are open to you, my dear lady! There is no work to be done to me, by you."

VERSE 19

कः पुमांस्तु कुले जातह् स्त्रियं परगृहोषिताम्
तेजस्वी पुनरादद्यात् सुहृल्लेख्येन चेतसा

kaḥ pumāṃstu kule jātah striyaṃ paragṛhoṣitām
tejasvī punarādadyāt suhṛllekhyena cetasā

SYNONYMS

kaḥ tejasvī pumān: which noble man | jātaḥ: born | kule: in an illustrious race | ādadyāt: will take | punaḥ: back | striyam: a woman | paragṛhoṣitām: who lived in another's abode | suhṛllekhyena cetasā: with an eager mind? |

TRANSLATION

"Which noble man, born in an illustrious race, will take back a woman who lived in another's abode, with an eager mind?"

VERSE 20

रावणाङ्कपरिक्लिष्टां दृष्टां दुष्टेन चक्षुषा
कथं त्वां पुनरादद्यां कुलं व्यपदिशन् महत्

rāvaṇāṅkaparikliṣṭāṃ dṛṣṭāṃ duṣṭena cakṣuṣā
kathaṃ tvāṃ punarādadyāṃ kulaṃ vyapadiśan mahat

SYNONYMS

vyapadiśan: while mentioning about | mahat kulam: my great lineage | katham: how | ādadyām: can I accept | punaḥ: again | tvām: you | rāvaṇāṅka parikliṣṭān: who were harassed in Ravana's lap while being borne away by him) dR^iShTaam = and who were seen (by him) duShTena chakShuShaa = with evil looks? |

TRANSLATION

"While mentioning greatly about my lineage, how can I accept again, you who were harassed in Ravana's lap (while being borne away by him) and who were seen (by him) with evil looks?"

VERSE 21

तदर्थं निर्जिता मे त्वं यशः प्रत्याहृतं मया
नास्थ् मे त्वय्यभिष्वङ्गो यथेष्टं गम्यतामितः

tadarthaṃ nirjitā me tvaṃ yaśaḥ pratyāhṛtaṃ mayā
nāsth me tvayyabhiṣvaṅgo yatheṣṭaṃ gamyatāmitaḥ

SYNONYMS

tvam nirjitā: you were won | me: for me | tadartham: for that end (viz. retrieval of my lost honour) | yaśaḥ: the honour | pratyāhṛtam: has been restored | mayā: by me | na asti: there is no | abhiṣvaṅgaḥ: intense attachment | tvayi: in you | gamyatām: you may go | yatheṣṭam: wherever you like | itaḥ: from here. |

TRANSLATION

"You were won by me with that end in view (viz. the retrieval of my lost honour). The honour has been restored by me. For me, there is no intense attachment in you. You may go wherever you like from here."

VERSE 22

तदद्य व्याहृतं भद्रे मयैतत् कृतबुद्धिना
लक्ष्मणे वाथ भरते कुरु बुद्धिं यथासुखम्

tadadya vyāhṛtaṃ bhadre mayaitat kṛtabuddhinā
lakṣmaṇe vātha bharate kuru buddhiṃ yathāsukham

SYNONYMS

bhadre: O gracious lady! | tat: therefore | etat: this | vyāhṛtam: has been spoken | mayā: by me | adya: today | kṛta buddhinā: with a resolved mind | kuru buddhim: set your mind | lakṣmaṇe: on Lakshmana | atha: or | bharate: on Bharata | yathā sukham: as per your ease. |

TRANSLATION

"O gracious lady! Therefore, this has been spoken by me today, with a resolved mind. Set you mind on Lakshmana or Bharata, as per your ease."

VERSE 23

शत्रुघ्ने वाथ सुग्रीवे राक्षसे वा विभीषणे
निवेशय मनः सीते यथा वा सुखमात्मनः

śatrughne vātha sugrīve rākṣase vā vibhīṣaṇe
niveśaya manaḥ sīte yathā vā sukhamātmanaḥ

SYNONYMS

sīte: O Seetha! | niveśaya: set | manaḥ: your mind | śatrughne vā: either on Shatrughna | atha: or | sugrīva: on Sugreeva | vibhīṣaṇe va: or on Vibhishana | rākṣase: the demon | ātmanaḥ yathā sukham: or according to your own comfort. |

TRANSLATION

"O Seetha! Otherwise, set your mind either on Shatrughna or on Sugreeva or on Vibhishana the demon; or according to your own comfort."

VERSE 24

न हि त्वां रावणो दृष्ट्वो दिव्यरूपां मनोरमाम्
मर्षयेत चिरं सीते स्वगृहे पर्यवस्थिताम्

na hi tvāṃ rāvaṇo dṛṣṭvo divyarūpāṃ manoramām
marṣayeta ciraṃ sīte svagṛhe paryavasthitām

SYNONYMS

dṛṣṭvā: seeing | tvām: you | divyarūpām: who are endowed with a beautiful form | manoramām: and attractive to the sense | paryavasthitām: detained | ciram: for long | svagṛhe: in his abode | rāvaṇaḥ: Ravana | na marṣayetahi: could not have endured (your separation). |

TRANSLATION

"Seeing you, who are endowed with a beautiful form and attractive to the sense, detained for long in his abode, Ravana could not have endured your separation."

VERSE 25

इत्यार्षे श्रीमद्रामायणे आदिकाव्ये युद्धकाण्डे पञ्चदशाधिकशततमः सर्गः

ityārṣe śrīmadrāmāyaṇe ādikāvye yuddhakāṇḍe pañcadaśādhikaśatatamaḥ sargaḥ

SYNONYMS

upaśrutya: hearing | tat: that | apriyam: unpalatable speech | priyāt: from her beloved husband | maithilī: Seetha | priyārha śravaṇā: who used to hear pleasing words alone | subhṛśam pravepitā: was very much trembled | cirasya: for long | vallarīva: like a creeper | gajendra abhihatā: attacked by the proboscis of an elephant | mumoca: and shed | bāṣpam: tears. |

TRANSLATION

Hearing that unpalatable speech of her beloved husband, Seetha who used to hear pleasing words alone, was very much trembled for long, like a creeper attacked by the proboscis of an elephant and thereupon shed tears.
