VERSE 1

अथ हैमवतीम् राम दिश्हम् त्यक्त्वा महामुनिः
पूर्वाम् दिश्हम् अनुप्राप्य तपः तेपे सुदारुणम्

atha haimavatīm rāma diśham tyaktvā mahāmuniḥ
pūrvām diśham anuprāpya tapaḥ tepe sudāruṇam

SYNONYMS

rāma: oh, Rama | atha mahā muniḥ: then, great-saint | haimavatīm diśam = snovbound, direction: Himalayan area, northern side | tyaktvā: leaving off | pūrvām diśam anuprāpya: eastern, direction, on arriving | sudāruṇam tapaḥ tepe: highly rigorous, ascesis, undertook. |

TRANSLATION

"That great-saint Vishvamitra then leaving off the snowbound Himalayas on north, oh, Rama, he reached eastern quarter and undertook rigorous ascesis." Thus Sage Shataananda continued the legend of Vishvamitra. [1-65-1]

VERSE 2

मौनम् वर्ष्ह सहस्रस्य कृत्वा व्रतम् अनुत्तमम्
छकार अप्रतिमम् राम तपः परम दुष्ह्करम्

maunam varṣha sahasrasya kṛtvā vratam anuttamam
chakāra apratimam rāma tapaḥ parama duṣhkaram

SYNONYMS

rāma: Rama | varṣa sahasrasya: of years, thousand | an uttamam: un, excelled | maunam: muteness | vratam: vow | kṛtvā: on making [committing himself] | a pratimam: un, matched | parama duṣkaram: highly, impracticable | tapaḥ cakāra: ascesis, he performed. |

TRANSLATION

"Committing himself to a vow of muteness, oh, Rama, he performed an unexcelled and unmatched ascesis which is highly impracticable for others to perform. [1-65-2]

VERSE 3

पूर्णे वर्ष्ह सहस्रे तु काष्ह्ठ भूतम् महामुनिम्
विघ्नैः बहुभिः आधूतम् क्रोधो न अंतरम् आविश्हत्

pūrṇe varṣha sahasre tu kāṣhṭha bhūtam mahāmunim
vighnaiḥ bahubhiḥ ādhūtam krodho na aṃtaram āviśhat

SYNONYMS

, 4a| rāma: Rama | varṣa sahasre pūrṇe tu: years, thousand, on completing, even | kāṣṭha bhūtam mahā munim: woodenly, on becoming, great-saint | bahubhiḥ vighnaiḥ ādhūtam: many, by barriers, blasted [at full blast] | krodhaḥ [hṛdaya] antaram: fury, in inside [heart of hearts,] | na āviśat: not, entered | saḥ niścayam kṛtvā: he, firm determination, on making | a vyayam tapa ātiṣṭat: not, mitigated, ascesis, stood fast. |

TRANSLATION

"Even on completing a thousand years, even when that great-saint became woodenly, even many barriers are at full blast, oh, Rama, fury has not entered his heart of hearts, for he stood fast in an unmitigated ascesis on making a firm determination. [1-65-3, 4a]

VERSE 4

तस्य वर्ष्ह सहस्रस्य व्रते पूर्णे महाव्रतः

tasya varṣha sahasrasya vrate pūrṇe mahāvrataḥ

SYNONYMS

b, 5| raghūttama: oh, Ragu-dynasty's best, Rama | tasya varṣa sahasrasya: those, years, thousand of | vrate pūrṇe: ascesis, while being completed | mahāvrataḥ: one with a rigour-pledge | annam bhoktum ārabdhavān: meal, to eat, started to | tasmin kale: at that, time | indraḥ dvijātiḥ bhūtvā: Indra, Brahman, on becoming | tam siddha annam ayācat: him [Vishvamitra's,] readily available, meal, requested. |

TRANSLATION

"On one day when those thousand years of ascesis with the rigorous pledge of Vishvamitra are being completed, and when he started to eat his meal, oh, Rama, best of Raghu's dynasty, Indra arrived there disguising himself as a Brahman and requested for the readily available meal. [1-65-4b, 5]

PURPORT

This meal is prepared by Vishvamitra alone after a thousand years and such self-cooking of food by the ascetics is called, vaishva devam , since it is a sacred preparation anena vaishvadeva ante samaagato atithiH svayam upoShyaa api sviiya anna pradaanena sambhojya iti suucitam - dk
VERSE 6

तस्मैः दत्त्वा तदा सिद्धम् सर्वम् विप्राय निश्ह्छितः
निःष्हेष्हिते अन्ने भगवान् अभुक्त्वा इव महातपाः

tasmaiḥ dattvā tadā siddham sarvam viprāya niśhchitaḥ
niḥṣheṣhite anne bhagavān abhuktvā iva mahātapāḥ

SYNONYMS

bhagavān: godly Vishvamitra | mahā tapāḥ: great-ascetic | mauna vratam upāsthitaḥ: muteness, pledge of, one who is abiding | niścitaḥ: willingly | tadā: then | siddham: ready [meal] | sarvam: all | tasmaiḥ viprāya dattvā: for him, to Brahman, gave away | anne niḥ ṣeṣite = fūd, nothing, remained: Indra consumed everything without any leftovers | a bhuktvā iva: without, taking food [starved himself,] like | vipram kimcit na avadat: to Brahman, a little, not, said | tathā: later | punaḥ: again | an ucchvāsam eva āsīt: without, breath [with breath-control,] only, he remained | maunam cakāra ha: muteness, carried on [his ascesis,] indeed. |

TRANSLATION

"Then that godly Vishvamitra willingly gave away all the readied meal to that Brahman, and as no meal is leftover by Brahman-Indra, that great-ascetic Vishvamitra starved himself. Vishvamitra did not speak a little to the Brahman in dissent as he is abided by his pledge of muteness, and he again remained in muteness and breath-control. Like that, he indeed carried on his ascesis. [1-65-6, 7]

VERSE 8

अथ वर्ष्ह सहस्रम् छ न उछ्छ्ह्वसन् मुनिपुंगवः
तस्य अनुछ्छ्ह्वसमानस्य मूर्ध्नि धूमो व्यजायत

atha varṣha sahasram cha na uchchhvasan munipuṃgavaḥ
tasya anuchchhvasamānasya mūrdhni dhūmo vyajāyata

SYNONYMS

, 9a| atha: then | munipungavaḥ: saint, the eminent is | varṣa sahasram: years, [another] thousand | na ucchvasat: without, respiration | an ucchvasamānasya = vho is: not, taking breath | tasya mūrdhni: his, from head | dhūmaḥ vyajāyata: fumes, started to emit | yena: by which [fumes] | trai lokyam sambhrāntam: triad, of worlds, startled | ātāpitam iva abhavat: seared, as if, became. |

TRANSLATION

"That eminent saint remained without respiration for another thousand years, and then fumes have started to emit from the head of sage who is controlling his breath, by which fumes the triad of worlds looked as if it is searing, and this startled all the worlds. [1-65-8, 9a]

VERSE 9

ततो देवर्ष्हि गन्धर्वाः पन्नग उरग राक्ष्हसाः

tato devarṣhi gandharvāḥ pannaga uraga rākṣhasāḥ

SYNONYMS

b, 10: tataḥ: then | deva ṛṣi gandharvāḥ pannaga uraga rākṣasāḥ: gods, sages, gandharva-s, serpents, reptiles, demons | tasya: his [Vishva mitra's] | tejasā: by resplendence | mohitā: are puzzled | atha: then | tapasā: by [his] ascesis | manda raśmayaḥ = dulled, resplendence: of gods and others | kaśmala upahatāḥ = all of them: blemish, marred by | sarve pitāmaham abruvan: all, to Grandparent, then, addressed. |

TRANSLATION

"Then the gods, sages, gandharva-s, serpents, reptiles, demons are puzzled at the ascesis of Vishvamitra, and as their own resplendence is dulled by the ascesis of Vishvamitra, thereby they are marred by this blemish of lowered resplendence, then all of them addressed the Grandparent, Brahma. [1-65-9b, 10]

VERSE 11

बहुभिः कारणैः देव विश्ह्वामित्रो महामुनिः
लोभितः क्रोधितः छैव तपसा छ अभिवर्धते

bahubhiḥ kāraṇaiḥ deva viśhvāmitro mahāmuniḥ
lobhitaḥ krodhitaḥ chaiva tapasā cha abhivardhate

SYNONYMS

deva: oh, god | mahāmuniḥ viśvāmitraḥ: great-saint, Vishvamitra | bahubhiḥ kāraṇaiḥ = by many: all, means | lobhitaḥ krodhitaḥ caiva: [even if] allured, angered, also thus | tapasā abhivardhate: by ascesis, transcending. |

TRANSLATION

" 'Even if that great-saint Vishvamitra is angered and allured in order to foil his ascetical ascendancy, by all of us and by all means oh, god, he is transcending these lures, angers, and passions by his ascesis. [1-65-11]

VERSE 12

न हि अस्य वृजिनम् किंछित् दृश्ह्यते सूक्ष्ह्मम् अपि अथ
न दीयते यदि तु अस्य मनसा यत् अभीप्सितम्

na hi asya vṛjinam kiṃchit dṛśhyate sūkṣhmam api atha
na dīyate yadi tu asya manasā yat abhīpsitam

SYNONYMS

, 13a: atha: now | asya: his | sūkṣmam api: imperceptible, even | vṛjinam kimcit = sin: imperfection, in the least | na dṛśyate hi: not, appears, really | asya manasā yat abhīpsitam: his, heart, which, felt [desire] | na dīyate yadi: not, given, if | tapasā: by ascetic [power] | sa cara acaram: with, mobile, sessile | trailokyam vināśayati: triad of worlds, he devastates. |

TRANSLATION

" 'Now, even an imperceptible imperfection does not really appear in him, but if his heartfelt desire is not meted out, he will devastate the triad of worlds with his ascetic power. [1-65-12, 13a]

VERSE 13

व्याकुलाः छ दिश्हः सर्वा न छ किंछित् प्रकाश्हते

vyākulāḥ cha diśhaḥ sarvā na cha kiṃchit prakāśhate

SYNONYMS

b, 14a| sarvāḥ diśaḥ vyākulāḥ: all, directions, are tumultuous | kimcit na prakāśate: anything, not, brightening | sarve sāgarāḥ kṣubhitāḥ: all, oceans, are tempestuous | [sarve] parvatāḥ viśīryante: [all,] mountains, are eruptive. |

TRANSLATION

" 'All the directions are all tumultuous, all the oceans are tempestuous, and all the mountains are eruptive, and nothing is bright. [1-65-13b, 14a]

VERSE 14

प्रकंपते छ वसुधा वायुः वाति इह संकुलः

prakaṃpate cha vasudhā vāyuḥ vāti iha saṃkulaḥ

SYNONYMS

b, 15a| Brahman: oh, Brahma | vasudhā pra kampate: earth is, highly, tremulous | vāyuḥ samkulaḥ vāti: air is, turbulently, gusting | iha: now | na prati jānīmaḥ = not, tovards, ve knov: we don't know what to do | janaḥ: people | na āstikḥ jāyate: not, theistic, they tend to become. |

TRANSLATION

" 'The earth is highly tremulous, air is gusting turbulently, oh, Brahma, people tend to become non-theistic and we do not know what to do. [1-65-14b, 15a]

VERSE 15

सम्मूढम् इव त्रैलोक्यम् संप्रक्ष्हुभित मानसम्

sammūḍham iva trailokyam saṃprakṣhubhita mānasam

SYNONYMS

b, 16a| trailokyam: [all beings in] triad of worlds | sam pra kśubhita mānasam: with very, highly, perturbed, senses | sammūḍham iva: stupefied, as though | tasya maharṣeḥ tejasā: his, of grate sage, by resplendence | bhāskaraḥ ca: sun is, also | niṣ prabhaḥ: without, lustre. |

TRANSLATION

" 'All the beings in the triad of the worlds are very highly perturbed at their senses and they are as though stupefied, and when juxtaposed the sun is lustreless before the resplendence of that great sage. [1-65-15b, 16a]

VERSE 16

बुद्धिम् न कुरुते यावत् नाश्हे देव महामुनिः

buddhim na kurute yāvat nāśhe deva mahāmuniḥ

SYNONYMS

b, 17a| deva: oh, god | mahāmuniḥ: great saint, Vishvamitra | nāśe = in total destruction: of all worlds | yāvat: before | buddhim na kurute: mind, not, going to make up | tāvat: prior to it | agni rūpaḥ: Fire-god's, embodiment of | mahādyutiḥ: great-resplendent one | bhagavān: most reverential one Vishvamitra | prasādaḥ: he is to be placated. |

TRANSLATION

" 'Oh, God, great saint Vishvamitra turned out to be the embodiment of Fire-god, and before that great-resplendent and most reverential sage makes up his mind for total destruction of all worlds he is to be placated. [1-65-16b, 17a]

VERSE 17

काल अग्निना यथा पूर्वम् त्रैलोक्यम् दह्यते अखिलम्

kāla agninā yathā pūrvam trailokyam dahyate akhilam

SYNONYMS

b, 18a| akhilam trailokyam: entirely, triad of worlds | pūrvam kāla agninā yathā dahyate: previously, by End-Time, Fire, as to how, blazed away | [dahyate: burnt now] | deva rājyam cikīrṣeta: of gods, realm, wants to do [be potentate of] | [yadi: if] | asya yat matam: whatever, his, predilection is | [tat: that] | dīyatām: may be given. |

TRANSLATION

" 'As to how the End-Time Fire entirely blazed away the triad of worlds previously, now this sage may do likewise, hence whatever is his predilection that may be given to him, even if he wants to become the potentate on the realm of gods.' Thus, all gods appealed to Brahma [1-65-17b, 18a]

VERSE 18

ततः सुर गणाः सर्वे पितामह पुरोगमाः

tataḥ sura gaṇāḥ sarve pitāmaha purogamāḥ

SYNONYMS

b, 19a| tataḥ: then | pitāmaha purogamāḥ: Grandparent, keeping in forefront | sarve sura gaṇāḥ: all, gods', assemblages | mahātmānam viśvāmitram: to great souled one, to Vishvamitra | madhuram vākyam abruvan: harmonious, word, said. |

TRANSLATION

"Then all the assemblages of gods keeping the Grandparent Brahma in their forefront appeared before that great souled Vishvamitra and said this harmonious word. [1-65-18b, 19a]

VERSE 19

ब्रह्मर्ष्हे स्वागतम् ते अस्तु तपसा स्म सु तोष्हिताः

brahmarṣhe svāgatam te astu tapasā sma su toṣhitāḥ

SYNONYMS

b, 20a| brahmarṣe: oh, Brahma-sage | te svāgatam astu: to you, welcome, let there be [you are welcome] | tapasā su toṣitāḥ sma: by ascesis, much, contented, we are | kauśika: oh, Kaushika | ugreṇa tapasā: by rigorous, ascesis | brāhmaṇyam prāptavān asi: Brahman-hood, you obtained, you have. |

TRANSLATION

" 'Oh, Brahma-sage, you are welcome. We are much contented with your ascesis. Oh, Kaushika, you have achieved Bahaman-hood by your rigorous ascesis. [1-65-19b, 20a]

VERSE 20

दीर्घम् आयुः छ ते ब्रह्मन् ददामि स मरुद् गणः

dīrgham āyuḥ cha te brahman dadāmi sa marud gaṇaḥ

SYNONYMS

b, 21a| brahman: oh, Brahman | sa marut gaṇaḥ: [I,] along with, Marut-gods', assemblages | te: to you | dīrgham āyuḥ dadāmi: long, life, I am bestowing | svasti prāpnuhi: blissfulness, betides you | te bhadram: to you, safeness will be there | saumya: oh, gentle [sage] | yathā sukham gaccha: as you, please, take leave. |

TRANSLATION

" 'Along with the assemblages of Marut-Wind-gods, I bestow upon you a long life. Let blissfulness betide you. You be safe. Oh, gentle sage, you may take leave as you please.' Thus, Brahma said to Vishvamitra. [1-65-20b, 21a]

VERSE 21

पितामह वछः श्ह्रुत्वा सर्वेष्हाम् त्रिदिव ओकसाम्

pitāmaha vachaḥ śhrutvā sarveṣhām tridiva okasām

SYNONYMS

b, 22a| mahāmuniḥ: great-saint | pitāmaha vacaḥ: Grandparent's, word | sarveṣām tridiva okasām ca: of all, heaven, residents [words of] | śrutvā: on hearing | muditaḥ: cheerfully | praṇāmam kṛtvā: good devoirs, on performing [paying] | vyājahāra: said. |

TRANSLATION

"On hearing the word of Grandparent Brahma and the other residents of heaven, and on paying good devoirs to all of them that great saint cheerfully said. [1-65-21b, 22a]

VERSE 22

ब्राह्मण्यम् यदि मे प्राप्तम् दीर्घम् आयुः तथैव छ

brāhmaṇyam yadi me prāptam dīrgham āyuḥ tathaiva cha

SYNONYMS

b, 23a| me: to me | brāhmaṇyam prāptam yadi: Brahman-hood, befallen, if | tathaiva: like that | dīrgham āyuḥ ca = long, life [eternality,] also: if I got them | atha: then | oṃ: Om | kāraḥ: syllable [quintessence of] | vaṣaṭ kāraḥ: vaSaT, syllable [quintessence of] | vedāḥ ca: Veda-s, even | mām varayantu: me, let them patronise. |

TRANSLATION

" 'If Brahman-hood and eternality have befallen on me, let the quintessence of AUM and vaSat syllables, and even all Veda-s patronise me. [1-65-22b, 23a]

VERSE 23

क्ष्हत्र वेदविदाम् श्ह्रेष्ह्ठो ब्रह्म वेदविदाम् अपि

kṣhatra vedavidām śhreṣhṭho brahma vedavidām api

SYNONYMS

b, 24a| devatāḥ: oh, gods | kṣatra veda vidām: Kshatriya's, knowledge [kingcraft,] among geniuses | brahma veda vidām api: Brahman, knowledge, among knowers [scholars of Veda-s,] even | śreṣṭhaḥ: the outstanding one | brahma putraḥ: Brahma's, son [brainchild] | vasiṣṭhaḥ: Vashishta | mām evam vadatu: me, in this way, say [acknowledge] | ayam paramaḥ kāmaḥ: this, ultimate, yearning | kṛtaḥ yadi: done, if | sura ṛṣabhāḥ: gods, the best ones | yāntu: you may leave. |

TRANSLATION

" 'Oh, gods, he who is the outstanding one among the geniuses of kingcraft, and among the scholars of Veda-s as well, even that Vashishta, the brainchild of Brahma, shall acknowledge me in this way as Brahma-sage. Oh, the best gods, you may take leave if you can effectuate this ultimate yearning of mine.' Thus Vishvamitra requested the gods. [1-65-23b, 24]

VERSE 25

ततः प्रसादितो देवैः वसिष्ह्ठो जपताम् वरः
सख्यम् छकार ब्रह्मर्ष्हिः एवम् अस्तु इति छ अब्रवीत्

tataḥ prasādito devaiḥ vasiṣhṭho japatām varaḥ
sakhyam chakāra brahmarṣhiḥ evam astu iti cha abravīt

SYNONYMS

t ataḥ devaiḥ prasāditaḥ = then, by gods, one vho is besought: Vashishta | japatām varaḥ vasiṣṭhaḥ: among meditators, the best, Vashishta | sakhyam cakāra: friendship, made | evam: thus | brahmarṣiḥ astu: Brahma-sage, you are | iti ca abravīt: in this way, also, said. |

TRANSLATION

"Then the best one among meditators Vashishta has come over there when the gods besought him to come, and he made friendship with Vishvamitra. He also said in this way to Vishvamitra, 'you are a Brahma-sage.' [1-65-25]

VERSE 26

ब्रह्मर्ष्हिः त्वम् न संदेहः सर्वम् संपद्यते तव
इति उक्त्वा देवताः छ अपि सर्वा जग्मुः यथा आगतम्

brahmarṣhiḥ tvam na saṃdehaḥ sarvam saṃpadyate tava
iti uktvā devatāḥ cha api sarvā jagmuḥ yathā āgatam

SYNONYMS

tvam brahmarṣiḥ: you are, Brahma-sage | sandehaḥ na: doubt, is not there | tava sarvam sampadyate = to you, everything, vill accrue: in accordance with this sageship | iti uktvā: thus, on saying | sarvā devatāḥ ca api: all, gods, also, even | yathā āgatam jagmuḥ: as, they have come, went away. |

TRANSLATION

"No doubt, you are a Brahma-sage and everything will accrue to you in accordance with the sublimity of this sageship,' and when Vashishta said so to Vishvamitra, all the gods have gone away as they have come. [1-65-26]

VERSE 27

विश्ह्वामित्रो अपि धर्मात्मा लब्ध्वा ब्राह्मण्यम् उत्तमम्
पूजयामास ब्रह्मर्ष्हिम् वसिष्ह्ठम् जपताम् वरम्

viśhvāmitro api dharmātmā labdhvā brāhmaṇyam uttamam
pūjayāmāsa brahmarṣhim vasiṣhṭham japatām varam

SYNONYMS

dharmātmā viśvāmitraḥ api: virtue-souled one, Vishvamitra, even | uttamam brāhmaṇyam labdhvā: supreme, Brahman-hood on getting | brahmarṣim japatām varam vasiṣṭham: Brahma-sage, among meditators, the best one, at Vashishta | pūjayāmāsa: started to reverence. |

TRANSLATION

"On getting his Brahman-hood even the virtue-souled Vishvamitra started to reverence the supreme among meditators and his counterpart Brahma-sage, namely Vashishta. [1-65-27]

VERSE 28

कृत कामो महीम् सर्वाम् छछार तपसि स्थितः
एवम् तु अनेन ब्राह्मण्यम् प्राप्तम् राम महात्मना

kṛta kāmo mahīm sarvām chachāra tapasi sthitaḥ
evam tu anena brāhmaṇyam prāptam rāma mahātmanā

SYNONYMS

kṛta kāmaḥ = effectuated, aim: whose aim is effectuated | tapasi sthitaḥ: in ascesis, abiding | sarvām mahīm cacāra: all over, earth, he ambled | rāma: oh, Rama | mahā tmanā: by great souled one | anena: by him | evam: in this way | brāhmaṇyam prāptam: Brahman-hood, is achieved. |

TRANSLATION

"When his aim is effectuated Vishvamitra ambled all over the earth abiding in ascesis, and oh, Rama, this great souled sage Vishvamitra achieved Brahman-hood in this way. [1-65-28]

VERSE 29

एष्ह राम मुनि श्ह्रेष्ह्ठ एष्ह विग्रहवान् तपः
एष्ह धर्मः परो नित्यम् वीर्यस्य एष्ह परायणम्

eṣha rāma muni śhreṣhṭha eṣha vigrahavān tapaḥ
eṣha dharmaḥ paro nityam vīryasya eṣha parāyaṇam

SYNONYMS

rāma: oh, Rama | eṣa: he is | muni śreṣṭha: saint, best | eṣa vigrahavān tapaḥ: he is, embodiment of, ascesis | eṣa nityam dharmaḥ paraḥ: he is, always, in righteousness, obliged with | eṣa vīryasya parāyaṇam: he is, for fortitude, dwelling house stonghold. |

TRANSLATION

"Oh, Rama, he is the best saint, he is the embodiment of ascesis, he is always obliged with righteousness, and he is the stronghold for fortitude." [1-65-29]

VERSE 30

एवम् उक्त्वा महातेजा विरराम द्विजोत्तमः
श्हतानंद वछः श्ह्रुत्वा राम लक्ष्ह्मण संनिधौ

evam uktvā mahātejā virarāma dvijottamaḥ
śhatānaṃda vachaḥ śhrutvā rāma lakṣhmaṇa saṃnidhau

SYNONYMS

, 31a| mahātejāḥ dvijottamaḥ: great-resplendent, Brahman, the best [Shataananda] | evam uktvā virarāma: that way, on saying, took respite | janakaḥ: King Janaka | rāma lakṣmaṇa sannidhau: Rama, Lakshmana, in the presence of | śatānanda vacaḥ śrutvā: Shataananda's, words, on listening | prānjaliḥ: with adjoined palms | kuśikāatmajam vākyam uvāca: Kushika's, son sentence, said to. |

TRANSLATION

On narrating the legend of Vishvamitra in this way that best Brahman and great-resplendent Sage Shataananda took respite. And on listening the narration of Sage Shataananda said in the presence of Rama and Lakshmana, king Janaka said this sentence to Kushika's son, Vishvamitra, with suppliantly adjoined palms. [1-65-30b, 31a]

VERSE 31

धन्यो अस्मि अनुगृहीतो अस्मि यस्य मे मुनिपुंगव

dhanyo asmi anugṛhīto asmi yasya me munipuṃgava

SYNONYMS

TRANSLATION

"Oh, eminent sage Vishvamitra, you happened to be here at this Vedic-ritual which is conducted by me, oh, Kaushika, that too, along with Rama and Lakshmana, the legatees of Kakutstha, thereby I am fortunate, I am much obliged. [31b, 32a]

VERSE 32

पावितो अहम् त्वया ब्रह्मन् दर्श्हनेन महामुने

pāvito aham tvayā brahman darśhanena mahāmune

SYNONYMS

b, 33a| mahāmune brahman: oh, great saint, oh, Brahman | tvayā darśanena = by you, vhen sī: by your graceful glance | aham pāvitaḥ: I am, consecrated | tava sandarśanāt: you, by [my] beholding | maya bahu vidhāḥ guṇāḥ prāptāḥ: many, kinds, of attributes [boons,] achieved [by me.] |

TRANSLATION

"Oh, Brahman, I stand consecrated just by your graceful glance, and oh, great saint, I reckon that I have achieved many boons just glancing at you. [1-65-32b, 33a]

VERSE 33

विस्तरेण छ वै ब्रह्मन् कीर्त्यमानम् महत्तपः

vistareṇa cha vai brahman kīrtyamānam mahattapaḥ

SYNONYMS

b, 34a| mahā tejaḥ brahman: oh, great-resplendent, Brahman | vistareṇa kīrtyamānam: comprehensively, being extolled | [te: your] | mahattapaḥ: great ascesis | maya: by me | mahātmanā rāmeṇa: by noble souled, Rama | śrutam vai: heard, indeed. |

TRANSLATION

"Oh, great-resplendent Brahman, myself and the noble souled Rama have heard about your great ascesis when Sage Shataananda extolled it comprehensively. [1-65-33b, 34a]

VERSE 34

सदस्यैः प्राप्य छ सदः श्ह्रुताः ते बहवो गुणाः

sadasyaiḥ prāpya cha sadaḥ śhrutāḥ te bahavo guṇāḥ

SYNONYMS

b, 35| sadasyaiḥ sadaḥ prāpya = by congregationalists, congregation, [vho have] come: who are available in | te bahavaḥ guṇāḥ śrutāḥ: your, numerous, endowments, are heard | tubhyam tapaḥ aprameyam: your, ascesis, is inestimable | te balam ca aprameyam: your, power, also, is infinite | kuśikātmaja: oh, son of Kushika | te guṇāḥ caiva: your, talents, also thus | nityam aprameyā: everlastingly, invaluable. |

TRANSLATION

"The congregationalists available in this Vedic-ritual congregation have also heard about your numerous endowments. Inestimable is your ascesis, infinite is your power, and oh, son of Kushika, your talents are everlastingly invaluable. [1-65-34b, 35]

VERSE 36

तृप्तिः आश्ह्छर्य भूतानाम् कथानाम् न अस्ति मे विभो
कर्म कालो मुनि श्ह्रेष्ह्ठ लम्बते रवि मण्डलम्

tṛptiḥ āśhcharya bhūtānām kathānām na asti me vibho
karma kālo muni śhreṣhṭha lambate ravi maṇḍalam

SYNONYMS

vibho: oh, lord | āścarya bhūtānām kathānām: wonder, causing, of narratives | me tṛptiḥ na asti: to me, contentment, not, is there | muni śreṣṭha: oh, saint, the best | ravi maṇḍalam lambate: sun's, sphere, dangling | karma kālaḥ: ritual, time | [abhivartate: is approaching.] |

TRANSLATION

"Oh, lord, there is no contentment to me while listening to your wondrous narratives, but oh nobleman, time for vespertine ritual is fast approaching as sun's sphere is dangling westward. [1-65-36]

VERSE 37

श्ह्वः प्रभाते महातेजो द्रष्ह्टुम् अर्हसि माम् पुनः
स्वागतम् जपताम् श्ह्रेष्ह्ठ माम् अनुज्ञातुम् अर्हसि

śhvaḥ prabhāte mahātejo draṣhṭum arhasi mām punaḥ
svāgatam japatām śhreṣhṭha mām anujñātum arhasi

SYNONYMS

mahātejaḥ: oh, great-resplendent sage | śvaḥ prabhāte: tomorrow, morning | mām punaḥ draṣṭum arhasi: me, again to see, apt of you | japatām śreṣṭha: oh, meditator, the best | svāgatam: you are welcome | mām anujñātum arhasi: me [to leave,] to permit, apt of you. |

TRANSLATION

"Oh, great-resplendent sage, it will be apt of you to see me tomorrow. Oh, best meditator, it will be apt of you to permit me to leave for now." Thus Janaka sought leave from Vishvamitra. [1-65-37]

VERSE 38

एवम् उक्तो मुनिवरः प्रश्हस्य पुरुष्हर्ष्हभम्
विससर्ज आश्हु जनकम् प्रीतम् प्रीतिमान् तदाअ

evam ukto munivaraḥ praśhasya puruṣharṣhabham
visasarja āśhu janakam prītam prītimān tadāa

SYNONYMS

tadāa: then | evam uktaḥ munivaraḥ: that way, who is spoken to [Vishvamitra,] saint, the best | prītimān [prīta manāḥ]: pleased, at heart | prītam puruṣa rṣabham janakam: pleased, to the best one among men, to Janaka | praśasya: on praising | āśu visasarja = immediately, released: bid farewell. |

TRANSLATION

When he is spoken in that way, the best saint Vishvamitra is pleased at heart, and praising Janaka, who too is pleased to meet the sage, immediately bid farewell to the best one among men, namely Janaka. [1-65-38]

VERSE 39

एवम् उक्त्वा मुनि श्ह्रेष्ह्ठम् वैदेहो मिथिला अधिपः
प्रदक्ष्हिणम् छकार आश्हु स उपाध्यायः स बांधवः

evam uktvā muni śhreṣhṭham vaideho mithilā adhipaḥ
pradakṣhiṇam chakāra āśhu sa upādhyāyaḥ sa bāṃdhavaḥ

SYNONYMS

vaidehaḥ: legatee of Videha kingdom | mithilā adhipaḥ: Mithila's, king | muni śreṣṭham evam uktvā: to saint, the best, in this way, on saying | sa upādhyāyaḥ sa bāndhavaḥ: with, teachers, with relatives | āśu pradakṣiṇam cakāra: immediately, circumambulations, performed. |

TRANSLATION

This way on saying to the best saint, the king of Mithila and the legatee of Videha lineage, immediately performed circumambulations along with his teachers and relatives to Vishvamitra in veneration. [1-65-39]

VERSE 40

इति वाल्मीकि रामायणे आदि काव्ये बाल काण्डे पंछ ष्हष्ह्टितमः सर्गः

iti vālmīki rāmāyaṇe ādi kāvye bāla kāṇḍe paṃcha ṣhaṣhṭitamaḥ sargaḥ

SYNONYMS

dharmātmā viśvāmitraḥ api: virtue souled one, Vishvamitra, even | saha rāmaḥ sa lakṣmaṇaḥ: with, Rama, with Lakshmana | maharṣibhiḥ pūjyamānaḥ: by great sages, being venerated | svam vāsam abhicakrāma: his own, camp, started towards. |

TRANSLATION

Even that virtue souled Vishvamitra started towards his own camp along with Rama and Lakshmana, while being venerated by great sages who are available in the ritual-hall. [1-65-40]
