VERSE 1

पूर्णे वर्ष्ह सहस्रे तु व्रत स्नातम् महामुनिम्
अभ्यागछ्छन् सुराः सर्वे तपः फल छिकीर्ष्हवः

pūrṇe varṣha sahasre tu vrata snātam mahāmunim
abhyāgachchan surāḥ sarve tapaḥ phala chikīrṣhavaḥ

SYNONYMS

varṣa sahasre pūrṇe: years, thousand, while being completed | sarve surāḥ: all, gods | tapaḥ phala cikīrṣavaḥ: ascesis, fruit, wishing [to accord to Vishvamitra] | vrata snātam mahāmunim: solemnity, bath of, great-saint |

TRANSLATION

"When thousand years are completed in ascesis and when that great saint Vishvamitra took a bath of solemnity, all the gods have come forward wishing to accord the fruit of that ascesis to Vishvamitra." Thus Sage Shataananda continued the legend of Vishvamitra. [1-63-1]

VERSE 2

अब्रवीत् सु महातेजा ब्रह्मा सु रुछिरम् वछः
ऋष्हिः त्वम् असि भद्रम् ते स्व अर्जितैः कर्मभिः श्हुभैः

abravīt su mahātejā brahmā su ruchiram vachaḥ
ṛṣhiḥ tvam asi bhadram te sva arjitaiḥ karmabhiḥ śhubhaiḥ

SYNONYMS

su mahātejā brahmā: very, highly, resplendent, Brahma | su ruciram vacaḥ abravīt: highly, palatable, words, spoke | tvam: you | sva arjitaiḥ = on your ovn, acquired: undertaken | śubhaiḥ karmabhiḥ: with auspicious, deeds | ṛṣiḥ asi = sage, you are: you have become | te bhadram: to you, let there be safety. |

TRANSLATION

"The very highly resplendent Brahma spoke to him with highly palatable words, 'you have now become a kingly sage by virtue of auspicious deeds you have personally undertaken, let safeness betide you.' [1-63-2]

PURPORT

Vividly: 'so far, you are a king and by your auspicious deeds now you have become a 'kingly sage' raajaSi and to attain a still higher brahmarSi 'Absolute sageship' you are not yet merited... as the Absolute sageship will be endowed to those who are above the negative traits of humans, like greed, anger, lust, jealousy etc.'
VERSE 3

तम् एवम् उक्त्वा देवेश्हः त्रिदिवम् पुनः अभ्यगात्
विश्ह्वामित्रो महातेजा भूयः तेपे महत् तपः

tam evam uktvā deveśhaḥ tridivam punaḥ abhyagāt
viśhvāmitro mahātejā bhūyaḥ tepe mahat tapaḥ

SYNONYMS

deveśaḥ: god of gods [Brahma] | tam evam uktvā: to him, in that way, on speaking | punaḥ tridivam abhyagāt [abhi āgāt]: again, towards, to heaven came [came back] | mahātejāḥ viśvāmitraḥ: a highly vigorous one, Vishvamitra | bhūyaḥ mahat tapaḥ tepe: again, great, ascesis, performed. |

TRANSLATION

"On speaking to Vishvamitra in that way Brahma returned to heaven, and that highly vigorous Vishvamitra again performed a great ascesis. [1-63-3]

PURPORT

The word vi in the name of Vishvamitra is taken as the third syllable in Gayatri Hymn.
VERSE 4

ततः कालेन महता मेनका परम अप्सराः
पुष्ह्करेष्हु नर श्ह्रेष्ह्ठ स्नातुम् समुपछक्रमे

tataḥ kālena mahatā menakā parama apsarāḥ
puṣhkareṣhu nara śhreṣhṭha snātum samupachakrame

SYNONYMS

nara śreṣṭha: oh, man, the best, Rama | tataḥ: then | mahatā kālena = a great, after time: at a long lost time | menakā parama apsarāḥ: Menaka, high [prominent, apsara -celestial wench | puṣkareṣu snātum samupacakrame = in holy lake, to take bath, started to: started a swimming for sport. |

TRANSLATION

Then at a long lost time Menaka, the prominent apsara, celestial wench, has arrived and started to swim for sport in that holy lake. [1-63-4]

VERSE 5

ताम् ददर्श्ह महातेजा मेनकाम् कुश्हिक आत्मजः
रूपेण अप्रतिमाम् तत्र विद्युतम् जलदे यथा

tām dadarśha mahātejā menakām kuśhika ātmajaḥ
rūpeṇa apratimām tatra vidyutam jalade yathā

SYNONYMS

mahātejāḥ kuśika ātmajaḥ = great resplendent, k͟huśi's, son: Vishvamitra | tatra = there: in holy lake | jalade vidyutam yathā: in black-cloud, electric-flash, as with | rūpeṇa a pratimām = by mien, not, matcabe: an incomparable one | tām menakām dadarśa: at her, Menaka, he has seen. |

TRANSLATION

"That great resplendent sage Vishvamitra has seen Menaka who is incomparable in her mien and comparable to an electric-flash in a black-cloud, while she is swimming in the holy lake. [1-63-5]

VERSE 6

दृष्ह्ट्वा कन्दर्प वश्हगो मुनिः ताम् इदम् अब्रवीत्
अप्सरः स्वागतम् ते अस्तु वस छ इह मम आश्ह्रमे

dṛṣhṭvā kandarpa vaśhago muniḥ tām idam abravīt
apsaraḥ svāgatam te astu vasa cha iha mama āśhrame

SYNONYMS

, 7a| dṛṣṭvā muniḥ: having seen, the sage | kandarpa vaśa gaḥ: Love-god's, control, on going into | tām idam abravīt: to her, this, said | apsaraḥ te svāgatam astu: oh, apsara, to you, welcome, is there | mama iha āśrame vasa ca: mine, here, in hermitage, you stay, also | madanena su mohitam: by Love-god, bewitched [for you] | [mām: me] | anugṛhṇīṣva: oblige me | te bhadram: you be safe. |

TRANSLATION

"On seeing her the sage having gone under the sway o Love-god said this to her, 'oh, apsara, you are welcome, I invite you to bide in my hermitage. Oblige me who am bewitched by Love-god for you. You be safe. [1-63-6, 7a]

VERSE 7

इति उक्ता सा वरारोहा तत्र वासम् अथ अकरोत्

iti uktā sā varārohā tatra vāsam atha akarot

SYNONYMS

b, 8, 9a| ṟāghava: oh, Raghava | sā varārohā iti uktā: she, that beautiful nymph, thus, she who is spoken to | atha tatra vāsam akarot: then, there, stopover, she made | saumya: oh, gentle Rama | tasyām viśvāmitra āśrame vasantyām: by her, in Vishvamitra's, hermitage, while staying | panca panca ca: five, five [ten,] also | varṣāṇi sukhena vyaticakramuḥ: years, comfortably, elapsed | viśvāmitram: to Vishvamitra | tapasaḥ mahā vighnaḥ: for ascesis, great, hindrance | upāgatam hi: came near [faced with,] indeed. |

TRANSLATION

"When he said thus to her, oh, Raghava, then she made a stopover there and ten years rolled by comfortably, and oh, gentle Rama, because of her staying Vishvamitra is indeed faced with a great hindrance in his ascesis. [1-63-7b, 8, 9a]

VERSE 9

अथ काले गते तस्मिन् विश्ह्वामित्रो महामुनिः

atha kāle gate tasmin viśhvāmitro mahāmuniḥ

SYNONYMS

b, 10| atha tasmin kāle gate: then, that [ten years,] time, having elapsed | mahāmuniḥ viśvāmitraḥ cintā śoka parāyaṇaḥ: great-saint, Vishvamitra, with distress, doleful, he became | sa vrīḍa iva: with, humiliation, as it were | samvṛttaḥ: enwrapped in | raghunandana: oh, Raghu's, legatee | muneḥ: to saint | sa amarṣā: with, resentment | buddhiḥ samutpannā: thought, occurred. |

TRANSLATION

"Then after the lapse of that ten year period Vishvamitra became doleful with distress and he is enwrapped in humiliation, as it were, and, oh, Rama, Raghu's legatee, then a resentful thought occurred to him. [1-63-9b, 10]

VERSE 11

सर्वम् सुराणाम् कर्म एतत् तपो अपहरणम् महत्
अहो रात्रा अपदेश्हेन गताः संवत्सरा दश्ह

sarvam surāṇām karma etat tapo apaharaṇam mahat
aho rātrā apadeśhena gatāḥ saṃvatsarā daśha

SYNONYMS

, 12a| etat sarvam = this, all: all this is | mahat tapaḥ apaharaṇam: great [merit,] of ascesis, to defraud | surāṇām karma: all, gods', deed [mischief] | kāma moha abhibhūtasya: lust, lure, one who is influenced [i.e., me] | daśa samvatsarā: ten, years | ahaḥ rātrā apadeśena = days, night, in the name of: as if they are one day and one night | gatāḥ: rolled by | ayam vighnaḥ: this, hindrance | pratyupasthitaḥ [prati upa sthitaḥ] = above all, to near, came: encountered. |

TRANSLATION

" 'All this is the mischief of gods to defraud me of the great merit of my ascesis. Ten years have rolled by as if they are just a day and a night. Furthermore, I who am under the influence of lust and lure had to encounter this hindrance in my ascesis. [1-63-11, 12a]

VERSE 12

स विनिःश्ह्वसन् मुनिवरः पश्ह्छात्तापेन दुःखितः

sa viniḥśhvasan munivaraḥ paśhchāttāpena duḥkhitaḥ

SYNONYMS

b, 13, 14a| rāma: oh, Rama | munivaraḥ: saint, the best | kuśika ātmajaḥ: Kushika's, son Vishvamitra | paścāttāpena duḥkhitaḥ viniḥśvasan: with reparation, becoming emotional, [and] suspiring | bhītām prānjalim sthitām: one who is scared, with well-adjoined palms, staying [waiting] | vepantīm: one who is shivering | apsarasam menakām dṛṣṭvā: celestial wench, Menaka, on seeing | madhuraiḥ vākyaiḥ: with pleasant, words | visṛjya: released [sending her away] | saḥ viśvāmitraḥ: he, Vishvamitra | uttaram parvatam: northern, [Himalayan mountain] | jagāma ha: went to, indeed. |

TRANSLATION

"Oh, Rama, that best saint suspired heavily when he became emotional with reparation. But on seeing the scared celestial wench Menaka, who is shivering and waiting with suppliantly adjoined palms, he sent her away with pleasant words, and he that Vishvamitra indeed went to the northern Himalayan mountain. [1-63-12b, 13, 14a]

VERSE 14

स कृत्वा नैष्ह्ठिकीम् बुद्धिम् जेतु कामो महायश्हाः

sa kṛtvā naiṣhṭhikīm buddhim jetu kāmo mahāyaśhāḥ

SYNONYMS

b, 15a| mahāyaśāḥ: highly celebrated sage | saḥ: he | naiṣṭhikīm buddhim kṛtvā: for sang-froid temperament, resolve, on making | jetu: to vanquish | kāmaḥ: lust [or, his desire to vanquish Vashishta] | kauśikī tīram āsādya: River Kaushiki, riverbank, on getting at | durāsadam tapaḥ tepe: unsurpassable, ascesis, performed. |

TRANSLATION

"He that highly celebrated sage who made a resolve to attain a sang-froid temperament and to vanquish lust, performed an unsurpassable ascesis on reaching the riverbank of River Kaushiki. [1-63-14b, 15a]

VERSE 15

तस्य वर्ष्ह सहस्राणि घोरम् तप उपासतः

tasya varṣha sahasrāṇi ghoram tapa upāsataḥ

SYNONYMS

b, 16a| rāma: oh, Rama | tasya uttare parvate: his, at northern, mountain | varṣa sahasrāṇi: years, thousand | ghoram tapa upāsataḥ: unspeakable, ascesis, while performed reverently | devatānām bhayam abhūt: for gods, fear, bechanced. |

TRANSLATION

"Oh, Rama, while he reverently performed an unspeakable ascesis for a thousand years on the northern mountain, namely Himalayas, then fear occurred to gods. [1-63-15b, 16a]

VERSE 16

अमंत्रयन् समागंय सर्वे स ऋष्हि गणाः सुराः

amaṃtrayan samāgaṃya sarve sa ṛṣhi gaṇāḥ surāḥ

SYNONYMS

b, 17a| sa ṛṣi gaṇāḥ: with, sage's, assemblages | sarve surāḥ: all of the, gods | [brahmāṇam: with Brahma] | samāgamya: approaching | ayam kuśika ātmajaḥ: he this, Kushika's, son | sādhu: duly | maharṣi śabdam: an exalted sage, sound [name, epithet] | labhatām: let him get, may be given | [iti: thus] | amantrayan: they conveyed. |

TRANSLATION

"All gods coming together with assemblages of sages have approached Brahma and conveyed that, 'this Vishvamitra, the son of Kushika, may duly be given the epithet of 'Maharshi, Exalted Sage.' [1-63-16b, 17a]

VERSE 17

देवतानाम् वछः श्ह्रुत्वा सर्व लोक पितामहः

devatānām vachaḥ śhrutvā sarva loka pitāmahaḥ

SYNONYMS

b, 18a| sarva loka pitāmahaḥ: all, worlds', grandparent [Brahma] | devatānām vacaḥ śrutvā: gods', words [advice,] on listening | tapaḥ dhanam viśvāmitram: to ascetically, wealthy, to Vishvamitra | madhuram vākyam abravīt: pleasant, words, spoke. |

TRANSLATION

"On listening the advice of gods, Brahma, the Grandparent of all the worlds, spoke these pleasant words to the ascetically wealthy Vishvamitra. [1-63-17b, 18a]

VERSE 18

महर्ष्हे स्वागतम् वत्स तपसा उग्रेण तोष्हितः

maharṣhe svāgatam vatsa tapasā ugreṇa toṣhitaḥ

SYNONYMS

b, 19a| maharṣe: oh, Exalted Sage | vatsa: my dear | svāgatam: welcome | ugreṇa tapasā toṣitaḥ: by stern, ascesis [of yours,] [I am] gladdened | kauśika: oh, Kaushika | tava: to you | mahattvam: sublimity | ṛṣi mukhyatvam dadāmi: among sages, supremacy, I bestow. |

TRANSLATION

" 'Oh, exalted sage, I welcome you my dear, as I am gladdened by your stern ascesis, oh, Kaushika, I bestow upon you the sublimity and supremacy among sages.' [1-63-18b, 19a]

VERSE 19

ब्रह्मणः स वछः श्ह्रुत्वा विश्ह्वामित्रः तपो धनः

brahmaṇaḥ sa vachaḥ śhrutvā viśhvāmitraḥ tapo dhanaḥ

SYNONYMS

b, 20a| tapaḥ dhanaḥ saḥ viśvāmitraḥ: ascetically, wealthy, he, that Vishvamitra | brahmaṇaḥ vacaḥ śrutvā: Brahma's, word, on hearing | prānjaliḥ praṇataḥ bhūtvā: with well-adjoined palms, obeisant, on becoming | pitāmaham prati uvāca = to grandparent, in turn, said: replied. |

TRANSLATION

" 'And on hearing the words of Brahma he that ascetically wealthy Vishvamitra became obeisant and replied the Grandparent adjoining his palms suppliantly. [1-63-19b, 20a]

VERSE 20

ब्रह्मर्ष्हि श्हब्दम् अतुलम् स्व अर्जितैः कर्मभिः श्हुभैः

brahmarṣhi śhabdam atulam sva arjitaiḥ karmabhiḥ śhubhaiḥ

TRANSLATION

" 'If your Godhead had said that I am a Brahma-sage, a sageship acquired personally by my pious deeds, rather than an exalted sage, then I would have become one who is really self-conquered.' Thus Vishvamitra said to Brahma. [1-63-20, 21a]

VERSE 21

तम् उवाछ ततो ब्रह्मा न तावत् त्वम् जित इन्द्रियः

tam uvācha tato brahmā na tāvat tvam jita indriyaḥ

SYNONYMS

b, 22a| tataḥ brahmā tam uvāca: then, Brahma, to him, said | tvam jita indriyaḥ tāvat na: you are, with conquered, senses, as such, not | muni śārdūla: oh, sage, the tiger | yatasva = make an effort: in that direction | iti uktvā tridivam gataḥ: thus, on saying, to heavenward, went. |

TRANSLATION

"Brahma then said to him, 'your senses remain unconquered as such, oh, tigerly sage, make an effort for it.' Saying so Brahma went heavenward. [1-63-21b, 22a]

VERSE 22

विप्रस्थितेष्हु देवेष्हु विश्ह्वामित्रो महामुनिः

viprasthiteṣhu deveṣhu viśhvāmitro mahāmuniḥ

SYNONYMS

b, 23a| deveṣu: gods | vi prasthiteṣu satsu: verily, returning, while they are | mahāmuniḥ viśvāmitraḥ: great sage, Vishvamitra | ūrdhva bāhuḥ: upraised, arms | nir ālambaḥ = vithout, support: insecurely standing in levitation | vāyu bhakṣaḥ: air, subsisting on | tapaḥ caran: ascesis, undertook. |

TRANSLATION

"While the gods who came here along with Brahma have returned, that great sage Vishvamitra undertook another round of ascesis by standing in levitation, upraising his arms, and subsisting on air alone. [1-63-22b, 23a]

VERSE 23

धर्मे पंछ तपा भूत्वा वर्ष्हासु आकाश्ह संश्ह्रयः

dharme paṃcha tapā bhūtvā varṣhāsu ākāśha saṃśhrayaḥ

SYNONYMS

b, 24| tapaḥ dhanaḥ: ascetically, wealthy one | dharme /gharme: in righteousness / in summer | panca tapāḥ bhūtvā = five, ascetic: fires, on becoming - among them | varṣāsu ākāśa samśrayaḥ: in rain [rainy season,] [open] sky, taking shelter [as rooftop] | śiśire: in winter | rātri ahāni salile śāyī: night, day, in water, reclining | evam varṣa sahasram: this way, years, thousand | ghoram tapaḥ upāgamat hi = severe, ascesis, he obtained: he undertook, indeed. |

TRANSLATION

"In summer he became the Five-Fire Ascetic, in rainy season open sky is his rooftop, and in winter water is his reclining bed even by day or by night, and thus that ascetically wealthy Vishvamitra indeed undertook a severe ascesis in this way, for another thousand years. [1-63-23b, 24]

PURPORT

Five fires are four Fires in four directions and the fifth one is the scorching sun, overhead. An ascetic staying among these five fires will become an ascetic fire. The first word in first foot dharme , will also used as gharme , as above, in some mms.
VERSE 25

तस्मिन् संतप्यमाने तु विश्ह्वामित्रे महामुनौ
संतापः सुमहान् आसीत् सुराणाम् वासवस्य छ

tasmin saṃtapyamāne tu viśhvāmitre mahāmunau
saṃtāpaḥ sumahān āsīt surāṇām vāsavasya cha

SYNONYMS

mahā munau: of great saint | tasmin viśvāmitre: that, Vishvamitra | sam tapyamāne tu: while undertaking ascesis, but | surāṇām vāsavasya ca: for gods, to Indra, even | su mahān santāpaḥ: a very, high, burning [problem] | āsīt: it became. |

TRANSLATION

"While that great saint is undertaking fervent ascesis it has become a very high burning problem to gods and even to Indra. [1-63-25]

VERSE 26

इति वाल्मीकि रामायणे आदि काव्ये बाल काण्डे त्रि ष्हष्ह्टितमः सर्गः

iti vālmīki rāmāyaṇe ādi kāvye bāla kāṇḍe tri ṣhaṣhṭitamaḥ sargaḥ

SYNONYMS

śakraḥ: Indra | sarvaiḥ marut gaṇaiḥ saha: with all, Air-gods', assemblages, along with | ātma hitam: for himself, advantageous | kauśikasya: to Kaushika's son Vishvamitra | a hitam ca: not, advantageous, also | vākyam: words | rambhām apsarasam uvāca: to Rambha, apsara [celestial wench,] spoke. |

TRANSLATION

"Then Indra along with all the assemblages of the Air-gods spoke to Rambha, the celestial wench, words that are advantageous to himself, but disadvantageous to the son of sage Kushi, namely Vishvamitra." Thus Sage Shataananda continued his narration. [1-63-26]
