Śrī Viṣṇu Sahasranāma PURVANYĀSA VERSE 1

ॐ अस्य श्री विष्णोर् दिव्य सहस्रनाम स्तोत्र महामन्त्रस्य
श्री वेदव्यासो भगवान् ऋषिः
अनुष्टुप् छन्दः
श्रीमहाविष्णुः परमात्मा श्रीमन् नारायणो देवता,
अमृतां शूद्भवो भानुरिति बीजम्
देवकी नन्दनः स्रष्टेति शक्तिः
उद्भवः क्षोभणो देव इति परमो मन्त्रः
शङ्ख भृन्नन्दकी चक्रीति कीलकम्
शार्ङ्गधन्वा गदाधर इत्यस्त्रम्
रथाङ्ग पाणिरक्षोभ्य इति नेत्रम्
त्रिसामा सामगः सामेति कवचम्
आनन्दं परब्रह्मेति योनिः
ऋतुस्सुदर्शन: काल इति दिग्भन्धः
श्री विश्वरूप इति ध्यानम्
श्री महाविष्णु प्रीत्यर्थे सहस्रनाम जपे पारायणे विनियोगः

oṃ asya śrī viṣṇor divya sahasranāma stotra mahāmantrasya
śrī vedavyāso bhagavān ṛṣiḥ
anuṣṭup chandaḥ
śrīmahāviṣṇuḥ paramātmā śrīman nārāyaṇo devatā,
amṛtāṃ śūdbhavo bhānuriti bījam
devakī nandanaḥ sraṣṭeti śaktiḥ
udbhavaḥ kṣobhaṇo deva iti paramo mantraḥ
śaṅkha bhṛnnandakī cakrīti kīlakam
śārṅgadhanvā gadādhara ityastram
rathāṅga pāṇirakṣobhya iti netram
trisāmā sāmagaḥ sāmeti kavacam
ānandaṃ parabrahmeti yoniḥ
ṛtussudarśana: kāla iti digbhandhaḥ
śrī viśvarūpa iti dhyānam
śrī mahāviṣṇu prītyarthe sahasranāma jape pārāyaṇe viniyogaḥ

oṃ: The sacred syllable Om | asya: of this | śrī viṣṇoḥ divya-sahasra-nāma-stotra-mahā-mantrasya: of the great mantra which is the divine thousand-name hymn of Śrī Viṣṇu | śrī vedavyāsaḥ bhagavān ṛṣiḥ: the blessed sage Vedavyāsa is the ṛṣi (seer) | anuṣṭup chandaḥ: Anuṣṭup is the meter | śrī-mahāviṣṇuḥ paramātmā śrīman-nārāyaṇaḥ devatā: the deity is Śrī Mahāviṣṇu, the Supreme Soul, Śrīman Nārāyaṇa | amṛtāṃśūdbhavaḥ bhānuḥ iti bījam: 'He whose source is the nectar-rayed one (moon), the sun' is the seed | devakī-nandanaḥ sraṣṭā iti śaktiḥ: 'The son of Devakī, the creator' is the power (śakti) | udbhavaḥ kṣobhaṇaḥ devaḥ iti paramaḥ mantraḥ: 'The source, the agitator, the God' is the supreme mantra | śaṅkha-bhṛt nandakī cakrī iti kīlakam: 'The bearer of the conch (Śaṅkha), the sword (Nandakī), the discus (Cakra)' is the kīlaka (pin/lock) | śārṅga-dhanvā gadādharaḥ iti astram: 'The wielder of the Śārṅga bow, the bearer of the mace (Gadā)' is the weapon (astra) | rathāṅga-pāṇiḥ akṣobhyaḥ iti netram: 'He who holds the chariot wheel in hand, the imperturbable one' is the eyes (netra) | trisāmā sāmagaḥ sāma iti kavacam: 'He who is praised by the three Sāmas, the singer of Sāma, the Sāma Veda itself' is the armor (kavacam) | ānandaṃ parabrahma iti yoniḥ: 'Bliss, the Supreme Brahman' is the source (yoni) | ṛtuḥ sudarśanaḥ kālaḥ iti dik-bandhaḥ: 'The season, the Sudarśana discus, Time' is the binding of the directions (dik-bandha) | śrī viśvarūpaḥ iti dhyānam: 'Śrī Viśvarūpa (the universal form)' is the meditation (dhyānam) | śrī-mahāviṣṇu-prītyarthe sahasranāma-pārāyaṇe viniyogaḥ: 'For the pleasure of Śrī Mahāviṣṇu, in the recitation of the thousand names, is the application (viniyogaḥ)' |

TRANSLATION

Of this garland of mantras (constituting) the praise-song of the divine thousand names of Vishnu, The blessed Vedavyasa is the seer, Kṛṣṇa, the Supreme Self, is the deity, The metre is Anushtup, "Having His source in the Self, Self-begotten" is the seed, "The son of Devaka, the Creator and Sustainer," is the Power, "He whose glory is sung in the three types of Sama songs; the theme of such songs He who manifests Himself as the Sama Veda" is the heart, "The Bearer of the conch, He of the word, He of the discus" is the nail, "He of the Sharnga bow, the Wielder of the mace" is the weapon, "The One holding the reins of a chariot in His hands (Kṛṣṇa), who is imperturbable" is the armour, "The source, the vibration, God" is the supreme mantra. Let us engage ourselves in the japa of the divine thousand names of Vishnu for the purpose of pleasing Great Vishnu.
