धूमो रात्रिस्तथा कृष्णः षण्मासा दक्षिणायनम्
तत्र चान्द्रमसं ज्योतिर्योगी प्राप्य निवर्तते

dhūmo rātris tathā kṛṣṇaḥ
ṣaṇmāsā dakṣiṇāyanam
tatra cāndramasaṃ jyotir
yogī prāpya nivartate

SYNONYMS

dhūmo: Smoke | rātristathā: night | kṛṣṇaḥ: the dark fortnight | ṣaṇmāsā: the six months | dakṣiṇāyanam: of the southern course of the sun | tatra: there | cāndramasaṃ: of the moon | jyotiryogī: the light the Yogin | prāpya: reaches | nivartate: and returns |

TRANSLATION

Smoke, night, the dark fortnight, the six months of the southern course of the sun—the Yogin who takes this path reaches the light of the moon and returns.

PURPORT

This denotes the world of the manes etc., described by the term ‘starting with smoke.’ Here the term Yogin connotes one associated with good actions.
