BG 14.23

उदासीनवदासीनो गुणैर्यो न विचाल्यते
गुणा वर्तन्त इत्येव योऽवतिष्ठति नेङ्गते

udāsīnavad āsīno
guṇair yo na vicālyate
guṇā vartanta ity eva
yo 'vatiṣṭhati neṅgate

SYNONYMS

udāsīnavat: like one unconcerned | āsīnaḥ: he who sits | guṇaiḥ: by the Gunas | yaḥ: who | na: not | vicālyate: undisturbed | guṇāḥ: the Gunas | vartante: move | iti: that | eva: knowing | yaḥ 2: who | avatiṣṭhati: rests | na 2: not | iṅgate: unshaken |

TRANSLATION

He who sits like one unconcerned, undisturbed by the Gunas; who knows, ‘It is the Gunas that move,’ and so rests unshaken;

PURPORT

He who sits like one ‘unconcerned,’ namely, whose satisfaction consists in the vision of the self as different from the Gunas and sits like one unconcerned about other things and is not therefore disturbed by the Gunas through hatred and longing and who remains quiet, reflecting: ‘The Gunas function in their effects like illumination etc.,’ and so ‘rests unshaken,’ i.e., does not act in accordance with the effects of the Gunas.
